Was it just me or did we seem to get a few lenient decisions on the weekend? I'm used to the old "Solomon was within 5m of that player who fell forward so that's a free" type mentality but even with Solomon riding players there was nothing. The "in the back" from players lurching forward wasn't paid all night except for Pavlich when he dived and Goodes got pinged. Kirk even got ridden completely into the ground and nothing. Hinkley pushed a Swans player who then cannoned into his own teammate and no whistle.

The umpires looked much younger than usual too, anyways the game is much more enjoyable without the whistle happy ******s. They need to turn the clock back to when a free was a free and it was obvious to everyone watching... this game had tones of that, wasn't the usual basketball ticky tap shit.

Thought the umpires finally deserved a good mention for once.

Not at all

We had one of the worst umps in the AFL in Ray Chamberlain with his usual array of bewildering decisions. I will say they went both ways overall though
.

There appeared to be the usual quota of random decisions. As usual there seemed to be fewer bad ones on the replay than at the actual match. What about the goal umpiring? Were we robbed of two goals? The telecast didn't dwell on them too much. But then we're only Freo. I dare say if it had been a Collingwood game we would have seen replays ad nauseum from twenty different angles.

I noticed the umpires missing a few calls that would have gone our way when the Swans were putting the heat on in the third and fourth, specifically Goodes and Kirk with some of the tackles they put in.

I noticed this in all games this week.
Seemed to be paying alot less soft free kicks and werent conned as much by the actors.

Maybe they are finally realising they are getting way too much involved an the less seen of them the better it is for the game.

Yes there were still the silly free kicks but overall umpiring in this whole round was better.

They refused to pay any deliberate out of bounds regardless of how blatant or obvious it was.

passages of play would have 2-3 infingements that went uncalled, then 20 seconds later they would pick out a touchy touchy technical free.

Yep, obviously there were a few random decisions like most games, but I'm just saying the overall tone was much improved. Same with most games I've watched this round.

I bet this is just one of the phases the umpires go through, expect the old ticky tack shit back next week.

Yep we definitely had the rub of the green with the umps on the weekend Even though Sydney didn't get pinged once for their many tackles on us without the ball we still got the better deal overall.

Plus the first half against Adelaide was probably the most generous I've ever seen the umps towards us. That was the week after they r*ped the Crows against the Saints so the umps must really hate Adelaide.

Seems the umps and the MRP have both softened towards us this year (the Dogs game is the only one that stands out where we got our usual screwing over by the men in fluro). When we looked a finals contender they were both falling over themselves to shaft us but now we aren't a threat to the established order they don't seem to care any more.

What about the Goal Umpire at the city end when Sandi kicked that goal from 50, the Sydney defender must have been 50cm behind the goal line when he touched it but it was given as a rushed behind:rolleyes:

But there were a few shocking umpiring desicons both ways

My personal favourite "umpiring moment that explains all that is wrong with the current umpiring system" was when Palmer did his knee. As Rhys is rolling around on the ground, obviously in agony, one of the fluro maggots wanders over, leans down, says "You right mate [how about you use his name, knob-end??]?? Eh? [Rhys continues to clutch his knee, and a trainer is now on the field] Yep, your right mate. Right, I'm throwing it up, give me room..."

In the TV replay audio you can then hear one of the Dockers point out that Rhys might need some help, which gets the following reply, all while play is continuing:

"Yeah, what do you expect mate, I moved the throw-up a metre - he's fine..."

Un-freakin-believable.

If the umpy hadn't have been miked, and felt the need to show off to Geisch how 'in control' and 'play-on oriented' he was, I reckon he would have just blown time on, and at least let the trainers move Rhys away from play a bit, if not off the ground.

Perhaps I'm just too harsh.

BTW, nice to have you back Memsies. It's been like being at school without the class clown. Now we have someone to laugh at again.

Whilst this was happening some knob on ABC radio was saying

"Oh, I thought he was playing for a free kick there, he looks like he's hurt himself"

umpires shoud never be acknowledged until they get there shit together

difference between a bad and good game=umpires

also take those F***ing mics away from them i dont wanna hear the shit they dribble.....just shut your face and concentrate on umpiring the game properly

The holding the ball and incorrect disposal is always confusing and never consistant,I don't know how many times I see players drop it towards a team mate. There was a lot of poor decisions for both sides but what staggers me is they miss the bleeding obvious but then make great decisions a minute later.
What about the ruck contests grab, hold etc..all day then suddenly a whistle for something they have both done all day.
The Swans player who looped

I've noticed it more and more the maggots seem to be the Coach and runner, the only thing they I haven't heard a maggot say is to tell a player he looks a bit buggered and should sub after the next bounce.

As for frees !
I don't give a fig about free kicks. Nearly every free kick against us is legitimate. What I really do care about are the times a free kick is missed.

Maggots should be marked on frees they missed, not frees they've given. When between 3 field umpires they miss xxxx. amount free kicks in a game they get fined and or dropped.
I'd like to see that.

All that will do is result in 300 free kicks per game and totally ruin what's left of the contested aspect of AFL.

True.
Something has to done though. I reckon some umpys see themselves as being more important than players.
These guys aren't idiots by a long shot. Attention seeking megalomaniacs comes to mind. Without any decent independent control mechanism these guys can get away with influencing games.
And they know it.

"Don't block don't hold"

How about don't talk and pay the free when they do?

Excellent point. I agree entirely.

I know this subject has been done to death, but the standard of umpiring really is a worry at the moment. (Although I do tend to agree with Memories that this ANZAC round was ok - possibly due to the finals like atmosphere of these games and thus 'letting it go' a bit more.)

When I was growing up, if the ball was jarred free in a tackle it was 'play on'. There was and still is no such thing as 'dropping the ball'.

Of course, one can be correctly penalised for an incorrect disposal if they have had prior opportunity, yet the free kick here is still HTB - which is a contradiction when you think about it...

I don't mind a play on call when the ball is jarred free in a tackle, but I would like to see the bloke who dives on the loose ball protected a bit more. I find it frustrating when these blokes are penalised for making the play. If anything, they should get a free for 'in the back' when their opponent inevitably jumps on top of him to hold it in.

It promotes the ugly, cheap, lazy tactic of players trying to force free kicks instead of going in there and winning it themselves.

That's just shit though, because you could find a reason to give 200 frees a game if you looked hard enough. In packs and marking contests, you've got high contact going on all the time.

The good umpires let it go. Pay the ones that are clear and have an effect on the game.

Exactly if it has no real effect on the play let it go play on.
Its not netball where any contact is a foul but if things keep going this way it will be.
