The opposition coaches box at The WACA wasn't very popular.

Grade cricket was played at the WACA and I remember late 70,s playing a Colts GF there on the second cricket pitch area at the Western End of ground the ovals actually overlapped. The surface of the WACA was second to none in the 70's. Definitely was built for cricket IMHO.

Yes, gifted by by the government of the time.
In the long term this has acted against the WACA as football hasn't provided the infrastructure as in most cricket grounds.
Even packer couldn't hold the AFL to the WACA.
Packer had a wicket dropped into the trotting track next door.

East Perth would be the obvious WAFL club to be the WACA Ground tenant Mighty Eagles.

East Perth would be a good fit. The obvious has long gone. The WACA was Perth Demons home ground before moving to Lathlain, East of Perth.
I don't know exactly how the the two club's home grounds and recruitment areas became switched but they did.

Remember playing at Perth Oval in the Amateurs in the late 70s. And this was East Perths Home ground. Was a nice oval also but I think they turned it into a Soccer stadium. Saw East Perth belt Perth on this ground with Ross Glendinning starring For EP a colossus at CHB by 15 goals in August 1977

Perth Oval, just North of Perth, was East Perth's home round. The story goes that Perth Oval would have been developed as the main oval except the East Perth Royals were exceptionally strong at the time so the WAFL decided to have finals played at Subiaco to lessen the Royals power. Perth Oval was a much better ground for development since there was a large amount of space on the wings for the development of stands, but it was not on a railway line and it was difficult to find parking during WAFL games. Seemingly, the Demons originally hail from Victoria Park to the East of Perth and chose Lathlain Oval as it was on the railway line. The recruiting zones reflect those positions, with the Demons having the E.S.E. corridor and the Royals having the N.N.E. region. The closest either team came to representing their true region was the WACA. The Demons did play at the WACA for a while. Somebody said the Royals played there for two seasons but there is no mention of that in Wiki. The WACA was the home of umpiring for a period as well.

Perth's home ground from its inception in 1899 was the WACA Ground up until 1959 when they moved to the newly built Lathlain Park.
Perth did move back to the newly renovated WACA with lights etc in 1987-88 before moving back to Lathlain in 1989.
East Perth moved to the WACA from nearby Perth Oval for the 1988-89 seasons before moving back to Perth Oval for the 90s and then moved to the vacant Leederville Oval in 2000 as West Perth played their last home game their in 1993 and had moved to Arena Joondalup in 1994.
Perth Oval is now a rectangular stadium used for soccer & rugby.
Subiaco moved from Subiaco Oval to share Leederville Oval with EP in 2004 as Subiaco Oval was to be used for WCE training base and WA AFL games only bar the odd rugby, soccer & International rules games plus concerts, monster jams etc.
Subiaco Oval closed at the end of 2017.

Perth Oval is in Perth 6000. Swapping home grounds wouldn’t have changed much for Perth’s long term projection.

The development of the eastern suburbs of Perth essentially followed the Midland Train line and Beaufort Street to its north with the Armadale line being Perths traditional
southerly corridor (access to the south of the state) more than an easterly corridor.

East Perth was traditionally an industrial area with a small area of residential dwellings workers pooled from those inner suburbs along the river and rail line. Those working class and poor areas from Perth to Maryland’s, East Perth zone moved in a north easterly direction following them.

With Claremont, Subiaco and West Perth sharing the limited areas between the ricer, the city and the sea. There wasn’t anywhere left for Perth to go but to the South East. Maybe if the river ran directly east then Perth FC might have a zone north of Perth and East Perth more directly east.

Given that Canning River corridor never got a team like Swan Districts did Perth essentially filled the void.

Except Perth Demons would be in Perth and the East Perth Royals would be East of Perth.
It would have have helped with development if an Armidale team had been created for the S.E. railway corridor.
Perth is really no different from Melbourne in that the original teams have outgrown their original locations.

On top of $30m committed from the Federal Government (December 2019), and $30m from the State Government (August 2020), the City of Perth has now added $25 million toward the WACA redevelopment, specifically for the community aquatic facility.

This latest funding announcement has been included in the media statement released by the Federal and State Governments about the new City Deal for Perth, which includes moving the ECU Mount Lawley Campus to Yagan Square.
