AFL Club
Richmond
Hey guys,

Just a random question,

I was playing AFL 2007 on PS2 (shit i know) and just after changing the teams and waiting for the game to load there was a bit of information about clubs on the loading screen which said:

Richmond were formally known as The Wasps until a member in the crowd yelling out Carn the tiges'

I surely didnt believe it but back in the day is there any truth to this statement?

Wrenny this is the story I was told years ago.

The Tiges were called the 'Wasps' and in the old days (I think late 1800's) the crowd used to fill the Punt Road Oval and lots of people who couldn't see or get in, used to climb walls & trees to see the games.

Supposedly, there was one guy up in the tree who had a booming voice and everyone could hear his comments and support for the team. He became a regular face watching the games. Everyone heard him during games and he became a minor celebrity.

One day he boomed out 'Carn the Tigers' or 'Come on the Tigers' and before you knew it, the name stuck and we became 'The Tigers'. The name 'The Wasps' dried up as more and more supporters started calling us 'The Tigers' just like the guy up in the tree.

I remember hearing this story years ago. I just don't know where, but it stuck in my mind. Hope it's correct. But I did hear this version well before the PS2, Xbox or even computers were around.

For details of the early years, go here:

Cheers

it is true. i have read it in the history of the afl book which i have sitting on my bookcase. cant be bothered actually looking it up but apparently we were called the wasps by some people until some guy who was a bit of a character used to sit up in one of the big trees around punt road to escape the admission fee and apparently he used to yell out cmon tigers! etc. and it stuck.

and welcome back Wrenny!

Shit that made me look at my Join date March 2001, wonder how many yaers of online time I had. CJH recruited me from his old TigerFury.net website.

I would love to see some of our logos when we were known as the wasps and in the early days.
Really hard to find them on the net :(

Didn't we used to have jumpers similar to Hull City when we were the wasps?
I doubt you would be able to find any logos on the net seeming it was before we were even in the afl, if it was late 1800's

So Khan, you must have been a Mod when the Tiges were called 'The Wasps' and Punt Road still had sheep on it? ;)

And it's nice to know our club has always had "Don't **** with me creatures as their mascot"....wish the current side would grab some of that ferocity and arrogance of power.
Then again, nothing could be worse, than being called "The Blues"!!!!!!
What's that all about?
'They know we coming.....all dress up in tanking blue"
