I'd argue this is the worst period a group of supporters have had to go through bar those who saw their club go extinct/merge/relocate.
Melbourne and Richmond have had it pretty rough in recent decades.

I think Carlton are in stiff competition with us considering their own scandal + much worse on-field performance than us. Was it 5 spoons in 16 years?

When you take into account everything else that’s gone on, it’s undoubtedly been the worst period of our history.

The exit of Sheedy was always going to be an enormous test of the club. He defined us for over 25 years. We failed it in the worst way possible - literally could not have done it any worse - and we are still paying the price to this day.

Botched sacking of Sheedy

Botched hiring of Knights (still largely unexplainable why he was given the job)

Botched hiring of Hird and Bomber (no oversight) as we overcompensated to be “Essendon”

Disaster follows

Good hiring of Worsfold

Botched extension of Worsfold as we overcompensated for “stability”. The team has gone nowhere on field in 2018, 2019 and possibly now 2020. Possibly even beyond. Is Rutten the very best person for the job or are we again overcompensating for friendly headlines and “stability“?

We have two positives:

- Moving homes. I think we nailed it, we prioritised space and facilities so went to the outer suburbs. It could’ve been a St Kilda to Seaford exercise but on all evidence it was planned and executed very well, and all at the club are happy with it.

- The support. Oh my, the support. It is truly wondrous. Carlton had an off field disaster too and their support dropped. Other clubs in our position would’ve just about folded. We just keep growing. Essendon are a bit like Sunderland and Newcastle in England, a supporter base the size of which the club simply doesn’t deserve on any fair measure.
Knights got the job because he produced a full club plan and not just a on field plan. Three has been some good come from it in including a revamp of recurring and development.
The problem was we did not give the funds Hird got and he had no experienced coaches other than Gary O’Donnell.

They have been pretty awful, agreed. But those two teams have had short periods of being competitive and even won finals in the last 15 years.

We have been either complete shit or an inconsistent mediocre team at best. It pains me to say that I think players like Hurley, hooker, and Heppell will go through their entire careers without ever experiencing a finals win.

Everyone is going to say the current period because no one here was alive to see 1925-39 and relatively few were likely even around from 1969-82.

Statistically those periods were worse however. We didn’t make finals at all, much less win one, between 1927 and 1940. Imagine if BF had been around then.

The bar for finals was higher then, with only 4 clubs out of 12 making it as opposed to 8 of 16/18. 2002 was the last time we finished the h&a in the top third of the competition.

While true, the period of 1933-39 in particular is horrific in terms of our year on year record and far worse and more prolonged than anything in the modern era. Only in one season out of seven did we even win 50% of games. It was basically like the 2005-08 period doubled in length.

Wish I lived in 1924 fml

You make a good point although I think most of the people picking the current period wouldn't be doing so purely due to on-field performance. The supplements saga elevates the current period above those two previous episodes.

Carlton & Melbourne's last 20 years probably arguably more disappointing for on-field performance.

We've been mediocre but not outright poor, those two have both been disgraceful on-field at times.

On-field I agree but the saga experience took us to new depths.

Now without doubt. I’m 42 & witnessed 4 bomber flags by the time I was 23............

The last 2 decades has been such a haze of mediocre dog shit, one year just blends into the next to the point I’ve literally forgotten what it was like to follow a premiership contender.

*sigh*

This kind of exemplifies what I mean perfectly though. You’re old enough to have witnessed four flags but not old enough to have really experienced a previous crappy era to compare it to.

I’m pretty happy to concede this might be the worst era overall once the drugs mess is factored in.

In terms of onfield results it’s actually better than either 1927-39 or 1969-80 though.

Lived through both, the drug thing makes this the worst. I was very lucky in the 70's having Dad taking me every week to all the different grounds. Spoilt rotten you could say. But we would get absolutely pumped everywhere we went, most of the time. Didn't care, I loved it
The drug thing and the finals drought has made going bloody hard, but I just have to be there. The "top up" wins remain some of my all time favourite wins, particularly the c***ton one.
When we finally do it, and I still believe, the celebrations are going to be out of control.

7,688+ days without a flag now.

Blows 6,566 days (1925-1942) and 6,944 days (1966-1984) out the water.

Couple that with the 'game in disrepute' hiccup + COVID restricting access to games, and you have us living through the worst Bombers era by a mile.

Although, based on cultural/professional shifts and decisions taken, this is the first time in a long time that I have seen a side being built for the purpose of a full flag tilt.

The club went a long time without winning a final until '83 - after losing the first week consecutively in '81 and '82. We can only hope that '21 could be our '81.

This is a great thread.
essendon have been a non factor since 2004.
I think there is arrogance at our football club from both staff and supporters that Essendon have a god given right to be in the top echelon of clubs.
interestingly the same can be said for Carlton.
I think that both clubs have failed to evolve with the times and have been left behind.
some staffing decisions the club made have been baffling, sheedy was kept too long, knights over hardwick in hindsight was disastrous and Adrian dodoro has overseen our list over an extremely lean period yet our supporters almost celebrate his reputation rather than his results.
we have also had poor luck.
the peptide scandal should have never happened and destroyed four years of hope.
in the 2006 draft the old system would have allowed us to get a priority at pick 4 rather than 19. Joel Selwood would have been more impactful than [PLAYERCARD]Leroy Jetta[/PLAYERCARD]. Even in last years draft we got Nik Cox and Archie perkins. As good as they could be a couple of years earlier pick 6 and 7 were [PLAYERCARD]Ben king[/PLAYERCARD] and [PLAYERCARD]Bailey smith[/PLAYERCARD].
the club that has evolved best is probably hawthorn. they have a new challenge now.
I think we may be on the right path now.

Don't forget extending Knights contract.

August 29, 2010 -

Essendon extended Knights' contract last year and he has two years to run - Evans said the club would honour that financial commitment.
It is understood Essendon are facing a payout of up to $800,000 to Knights by sacking him now.

Wait, two years of payout only cost us 800k?

Has the price of a senior coach gone up significantly in the last decade or was he also dirt cheap back then?

Little from Column A, little from column B?

Pretty sure Gary Ablett Jr was on less than $500k at the time. Also remember talk assistant coaches salaries were exploding when we were luring Simon Goodwin.
