its not racist but I think Aboriginal people or indigenous is the proper word. It sounds better IMO.

Aborigines is to Scot as Aboriginal is to Scottish. So Aboriginals is just wrong terminology.

You are right though, it does seem to be rare to hear the word aborigine these days. Probably just out of date - it just an old fashioned English word that means the same as indigenous.

Yeah, it also reeks a bit of ethnocentric colonial mentality, lumping them all in together under one banner, ignoring the deep cultural, social and linguistic diversity of the various groups.

On topic - I really struggle to see how people get offended with acknowledging the Aborigines that succeeded and contributed to how great the AFL is.

When you consider that there is almost no other aspect of modern Australian society where the above is true you have to be pretty easily offended to have a problem with the AFL pointing out how it is different in a positive way.

(Let's not start a big argument about who is to blame for Aboriginal Australians current plight - blame to be dolled out in both sides)

What I believe is that its a great thing that people of all races are in our game. We dont need to single one out to 'pay tribute to'. That only divides us, when we should be trying to unite.

If there was a 'white footballers' round there would be outrage, so why stand for 'Indigenous round'?

If an indigenous player wins games for us we acknowledge his skill, not his race. Go and watch the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Well here it is:




A few decades ago society shunned aboriginal people and players found it hard to push their way into a white man's game. Then, select aboriginal players forced their way in through sheer skill and talent and began lighting up our sport, which in turn led to a generally racist society re-thinking their values.

This is one of the first examples of cultural diversity becoming trully accepted and embraced in Australia. In a way, the AFL is partly responsible for ending racism in this country (Garry Lyon for example admitted as such on TFS, he used to be very racist before the Michael Long situation changed society).

So now we embrace their culture and accept them into the white dominated socity - the Dreamtime game helps these 2 cultures understand each other and symbolises the AFL's triumph in overcoming racism in Australian society.

The AFL has been ahead of public modern values - you should be proud of our sport being able to push and break these boundaries in society.

This isn't divisive, its acknowledging the struggles and successes of a still marginalised group in society.

You act like if it wasn't for indigenous round that all races would be united in a happy cultural rainbow, dancing together in the streets.

Its a great oppourtunity for regional, isolated aboriginal communities to be put under the spotlight. Weather its bringing attention to deeds that need to be dealt with, or giving a young lad an oppourtunity to succeed when they otherwise wouldn't, the AFL should be commended for these themed rounds that at the end of the day, raise awareness and funds for important social issues throughout our country.

Women's weekend has been a great initiative by the AFL in getting the fairer sex more involved in our sport and has raised millions of dollars for breast cancer research.

Then there are rounds such as rivarly and heritage rounds that are designed for you, the footballing public to have something that means that little bit extra when you go to a football match. I dont know too many Port fans that wont think it means something a little bit extra when the AFL has a joined rivalry/heritage round and Port fans get to see the black and white prision bar jumper on the field against the crows. Its the kind of days football fans remember forever so i think they are a great idea.

I think rivalry round is stupid. The only consistent rivalries are Freo/WC and Adel/Port, and even the most classic Victorian rivalry in Collingwood and Carlton has lost a lot its impact. In my opinion the interstate derbies should be played in different weeks so that they can have a little more of the spotlight. I don't usually care much for watching interstate clubs play - probably because I hardly know any of their supporters - but I do enjoy the derby/showdown games. Let it take centre stage for its given round instead of having to share it with the other interstate rivalry match and a bunch of confused match-ups between the other clubs. Heritage round is good though. It could even be spruced up a bit. And yes, I do support an indigenous round.

I don't know what you'd do for a caucasian round though. I can't think of anything much sadder than a caucasian who thinks that what caucasians could really do with is an extra pat-on-the-back. I mean, pretty much every week is 'caucasian round', isn't it?

I really liked the "theme" themed round in round 2. Every match had a different theme. The freo hawks game was "purple haze" haha! the crows game was "Back to Grass roots" and had free BBQs around the ground... Not sure of the others (but fox sports did say every match of the round had a theme)

As someone mentioned the Purple Haze match is on every year for Freo.

And The Crows don't organise the BBQ's pre-game. It is just something everyone does in Adelaide before Crows games. been happening for awhile.
