Correct me if I'm wrong but that's the fort the Germans holed up in as the Allies advanced north to Rome. The fighting around here was some of the most intense in the war. The Canadians and Poles especially took huge hits. Eventually the RAF bombed the crap out of the fort (there exists clear footage of this), which lead to thousands of more lives being lost as the ruins provided perfect hiding spots for the German snipers to find cover behind.

Yeah from memory of what they told us about the battle there the Germans were bunkered down in a fort on top of the hill which is in the background of the photo I posted. Having the higher ground like the Turks in Gallipoli gave the Germans a big advantage and the Allies suffered huge casualties trying to win that battle. Like Gallipoli I think they underestimated how tough the battle would be and how fierce the enemy resistance would be so suffered a lot more casualties than they bargained for.

This is sacrifice.

No its ALL sacrifice. There's no higher/better bravery. No bigger/important battle. They're ALL higher better bigger more important. Each battle influenced and altered certain courses that entailed future battles, and towards the latter years both fronts were helping each other win.

No one is denigrating the sorrow and courage of the Russians. But a number of you are denigrating those of the allies, in particular the US of ****ing A which ironically contributed a lot towards saving the allied western nations which include you lot here.

My family spent two years under German bombs and rockets because the americans wanted the war to drag out as long as they could, as it was weakening Russia. Then spent a number of years still under rations, lived in an economy where they had to pay back the americans for the war, when the americans made billions out of German war factories that deposited its payments to Americans into Swiss bank accounts.

i got no time for americans.

You think the USSR didn't benefit from the war and didn't USE AND ABUSE its civilians in that process? You think Russian govt didn't throw your family to the wolves? You'd be ignorant and wrong and hypocritical.

When the Germans advanced into Russia, the Russians destroyed everything 50 k's either side the major roads so to limit any gain the Germans might get. They called it scorched earth policy. The war in the east was like no other, yet the west were quite happy that both sides destroyed eachother. I take offence when the west tries and claims it won the war and saved all these lives.

"If we see that Germany is winning the war, we ought to help Russia; and if that Russia is winning, we ought to help Germany, and in that way let them kill as many as possible.

Harry S Trueman in 1941..

Imagine if they held the view that the NAZi's must be stopped as soon as possible? How many lives could of been saved? How many economies could of been salvaged, all those Russian teenager women who wouldn't have to fight in tanks and in planes. How many less bombs dropped on england, How many less v1 and v2 rockets fired?

my mother might of saw fruit before 1948..

Your mind is set and no way of changing it, or at least softening it to see the errors in your thinking. Youre not speaking total BS but you're being far too absolute and taking what fat generals from USA might think and applying it absolutely towards all Americans or even other American soldiers or colonels etc. Creating in your mind an absolutist anti-american stance. That's what little brains do. Like I said the USSR generals and politicians didn't give a shit about millions of families like your family either.

Good and evil is found all over and both sides. Plus it was a particularly bad period of mankind when many atrocities were committed in the name of ideals and resource gain. Russia killed 20m of its own too.

Here's a hint for you. Don't learn history from computer games.

I prefer to learn reading non-fiction books actually thanks mate.

The reason I posted this was because so many people "learn" their history from playing computer games and watching tv shows/movies, conspiracy videos on youtube.

I know, but there's really nothing you can do about it so it's not worth getting upset over.

You're making a lot of absolute anti-western insinuations here, exactly what are your sources? Are they credible?

Atrocities were performed on all sides. It was war FFS. To think that one side was pure and good in everything they did is completely naïve and ignorant. The US and British did f*cked up things, even against their own people and against innocent civilians, and so did the Russians. That what happens in a war on this magnitude. The allies bombed the shit out of cities and killed innocent civilians even when they didn't need to (Dresden), the Russians r*ped innocent civilians on their way to Berlin.

I thought the point of this thread was to look back at D-Day and think of those that gave their lives and appreciate what they did? Not some east versus west flame war, with taunts being thrown around with no actual credible substance to them.
