I was just watching TAC Cup Future Stars. (A very underrated show I might add.) At the end of the 2009 season the Sydney Swans drafted Rohan, Jetta, Reid and Tyson-Lane. In the trade period they were able to bring in McGlynn, Kennedy and Mumford. That is seven very good players all now in their best 22.

They did not have the draft picks that we will have this year. They do have the ability to develop their players really well. This will be the key to our future success.

1. Good drafting

2. Shrewd trading

3. Player development.

No secrets here. My point: we CAN turn things around very quickly.

In 2007/8 we had a list that was truly ordinary, it needed a major overhaul. Baily was appointed and we went about the rebuild. Fast forward to 2012 and Bails is gone, mistakes were made, but the list whislt it is and has underperformed it is much better placed than in 2007. We have far less deadwood and most importantly we actually have some quality 18-21yo kids.

Now it's a big big if, but say we have the latitude in the salary cap the following senario could see us rapidly advance:
1) get Cloke as an unrestricted free agent.
2) convince Boak that Melbourne is going places and is 60 mins from his home town, trade P13 and a player (Ricky P type)
3) Draft Viney and Stringer
4) Gysberts, Blease, Strauss, Tappy, Watts, Jurrah and Taggert all have massive uninterrupted pre-seasons

No to Cloke, plus we can't afford Cloke & Boak.

Otherwise I agree

I don't know why people bang on about poor drafting and lack of player developement. The reality is when you look at our list it very inexperienced. We need to get games in the Kids we have. I know we've had some good draft picks but have we really got it horribly wrong? As for player developement i think it's harsh to say we don't develope players well. Put Trengove in that Geelong team with the great leaders that they have in their team, suddenly he doesn't have the heat of being captain. A combination of time and get in some experienced players that can't quite crack into good teams and we can turn it around. ie Mcarthey to port adelaide

Look the Clokes (all of them) are flogs of the highest order, but Mitch Clark and Trav Cloke would be close to the best CHF/FF combo in the AFL. We have ample cap space even without moving guys like Davey, Dunn, Bate and Green (veteran) who whilst rubbish footballers would still be on good coin Jamar would also have to be close to veteran status too so there's more in a year or two. Also add the potential of trading a Petterd or even Sylvia to get Boak further creates cap room.
