Thirds 2013

Ya never know who you;re gonna get with Cerberus. Depending on who's on base. We've got'em twice..as usual hahahaha

Ya find it weird that we're not playing you at your joint when our 1's, 2's & U19's are playing?

I find it quite amusing in the Thirds forum all the "talk." I actually headed down to see the Dingley v Cerberus game thinking it would be a cracker to start the day off. Not sure what you mean by Cerberus bringing "big boys", there were maybe 5 tall blokes (6 foot), and that was about it. If anything, Dingley were a far taller side. Where Dingley lost it was going defensive after quarter time, dropping so many loose players into their backline. Anyway, as JAM has said, you never know who you will play with the navy boys, with the turn over of players they get.
Will be interesting for you guys with Moorabin entering. Will they be dominant, or just another training run for the top 5? Going off what I have seen, I don't think your Thirds competition is what it was a couple years ago. But it is good that the league have it, at the end of the day, guys just wanna play footy. I like the concept

What is it that you find amusing?

The quality this year has DEFINITELY been down compared to the last few seasons. With us too, and mainly! :D We have our reasons, I'm not sure about everyone elses. We're NEVER good early in the year anyways.

Onto Moorrabin.. I fully expect them to be up and about this week. 1st week in. 3 games at home. Playing last years Premiers and the winner of 2 out of the last 3. Them getting touched up in the 1's & 2's means that I wouldn't be surprised if they have a handy side in the 3's this week.

We'll roll in with a bunch of old blokes, U19's, fit & unfit dudes who'll have a crack and see how we go.

Nice to get our 1st win of the year on the board.

Moorabbin just a bunch of what seemed like good blokes wanting to have a kick. They'll improve.

Hi all, I was just wondering if the playing standard of the thirds for the Southern Footy league was less than that of the reserves in the Nepean League? I’m struggling to get a game there and was thinking of switching across to either Dandenong or Hallam, as they’d be the closest ones to me. The only thing that concerns me is that it seems Dandenong are going along very nicely (almost possibly too good for me to join) and that they have heaps of players, where as Hallam don’t appear to have enough and although I just want to play, seem like they're just getting put to the sword every game which doesn’t sound very fun.

Also am I reading the match results correctly in that some teams have more than 22 players for the thirds matches while some may have less? If so I really like that idea as it means everyone gets a go

No Idea about the standard of the Nepean league 2's. The standard of the 3's was pretty good over the last couple years, but seems to have dropped off across the board for one reason or another. Except for maybe Cerberus, who looked to have stayed about the same.

We've definitely gone into some games short against some teams who have had 10 on the bench, so yeah, everyone tends to get a go. You can only have 8 in the finals though.

Dandy have obviously improved which is good for them, as they were fairly average last year. Hallam seem to be battling. Most sides tend to have some good players and some average ones. Depends what you're after. Dandy are half a chance of playing finals, I'd go train with them and see how ya go.

Hey Rummy, Im actually down playing 3rds at Dandenong. Played at Dandy a few years back, but started up again this year after injury.
I too struggled for game time playing in the MPNFL, so made the switch to the SFL.
The standard of footy is far less than that of MPNFL. At Dandy we have alot of numbers, but we have been playing with an extended bench in the 3s and have put in place a rotation system to ensure everyone gets a fair go.
If you turn up to training regularly and pay your fees, we can't knock you back.
We played Hallam on the weekend, and they look to be struggling, so if you want a walk up start i'd go there.
But at Dandy, the club is looking good as a whole. With only 2 games lost between all 3 sides. Plenty of numbers at training, and the committee are doing great things to continue to improve the club off field.

SFL Thirds is far below the standard of Nepean Reserves. If you are your average player, moving to any club mid season you may have to wait a couple weeks to get into a side that has say 3-4 players missing out each week, just enough time for the coaching staff to see that you are serious and want to play. I wouldn't just look at clubs with a thirds team, you might get a game at some teams who need some extra players to bolster up their reserves too.

I would probably give Hallam or Endeavour Hills a crack, maybe Lyndale as well but not quite sure on their numbers. I would of said Carrum 4 weeks ago but blokes have started to get serious and we have had about 6-7 blokes miss out each week for the last couple of weeks so it may take a bit longer to get a game here.

bwaaahahahahahahahahaha

and

ahhhhhhh hahahahahahahahaha

and ahhahah

and haaaa

Sorry. Some players do. Some just one night a week. Some not at all. :D

haha fair enough. Was just trying to gauge how serious this is. Really shows how fit I've been over the years, but when I used to play I found that if I tried to train Tuesday and Thursday, the body was hurting too much to get out of 1st gear on a Saturday! Might try and get to a club somewhere to have a training run and brush up on the skills or lack thereof.

Hi onthemoney, I was recently at a club in the Nepean league and most guys there trained both Tuesdays and Thursdays, though there were a few who have other commitments and can’t always make both nights. Their preseason was pretty intense with lots of sprint intervals and endurance running, some training sessions started with a 5km run with just a 2 minute rest before getting into training for another hour and a half. Since the start of the first few rounds the intensity dropped dramatically with Tuesday nights consisting of 2 hours of more skills related and scenario training and Thursday nights only being just over an hour, though skill wise I wasn’t cut out for it and not getting a game, and so with the great advice of the guys posted just above in this thread, I moved to the Southern league and had my first training session last night at a new club which has thirds side and was surprised as the training for a Tuesday night only lasted an hour. I almost felt like I was going to have to run another fast 5 laps around the oval to get a good workout.

If you haven’t done much/any running recently I’d suggest doing a 1km jog every second night (or morning) for two weeks, and by the third and fourth weeks to increase this to 3km. Without having played a thirds game yet I imagine that this would be the absolute minimum of how far you would have to be capable of running to be fit enough. It may sound like a lot, but to start you should be able to jog 1km in about 6-7 minutes, so its not very much time out of your day really. This will give you a solid base from which to start training and be able to fully run games out and greatly further improve your chances of being selected again in future weeks.

In addition you also better start with the push ups straight away. When I first started training I could barely do 20 in one go and was easily getting pushed around in the marking contests, but now I can do 60 in one go and can actually push back in the contests now. Not only does that certainly help your football, but it’s also a good feeling personally, in that now when I flex my arm it still doesn’t wobble around like jelly

A good idea would be to simply go down and watch a team at one of their training sessions, probably a Tuesday night as that’s the hardest training night, in order for the boys to be fresh for Saturday. But yeah I found when I first started that my legs could take half a week to recover from a single night of training, hence yeah you’d definitely still be sore on a Saturday, but after about the 3rd month, my legs finally burned of the fat and got used to it and my legs feel so good now that if I don’t do 3 workout sessions a week (2 training nights plus 1 game) I feel like that I’m being lazy

I think you may find that you will tear up a thirds comp when it comes to stamina with your training schedule. If its the club I am thinking of that you have gone to you may find yourself playing reserves in a very short amount of time.

Training should taper down as the season goes on, from being long and intense pre season to just getting a bit of touch on the footy towards the end. Being Round 7, had you done a full pre season you should be pretty fit by this time and its unlikely you will get too much fitter without burning yourself out before saturday. But if you feel like you are being under trained then do the extra laps, the fact that you feel fine after a normal training session means you have meet the coaches minimum expectations of fitness. But there is no reason why you shouldn't exceed it. I would even ask the coach directly and get his thoughts on your fitness levels and what he can do for you specifically, it is his job to make sure his players are at their best regardless of fitness and skill level so he may be able to tailor your role at training to be a bit more intense maybe?

1 hour does seem a bit short, I would say 1 1/2 hours 6pm-7.30pm is generally the norm even at this stage of the season.

Had a bit of fun at Hallam on Saturday where their time keeper may have thought they were a chance, considering the scores were pretty close and we were only playing with 17, probably 15 fit, and decided to play Time On in the last 1/4. I believe the quarter ended up going 37 minutes.

Good times :D

Yikes, I certainly wouldnt blame your midfielders for not showing up to training tonight!

also JustAnotherMember did you play in the thirds game against Dandenong 3 weeks back? If so I was wondering what jumper # you were, I remember quite a few of your teams faces from that game suprisingly, probably because it was a great game and down to the wire result (with the winning goal kicked after the siren)

It was a hearthbreaking loss :(

Hahahahaha Pin Head? Are you saying I'm really skinny..Coz I'm totally ok with that.

Just can't play in the granny every year (Won 2, lost 1 by 10 points...just for the record)... 3 in a row will have to do for now. Thought we'd let someone else have a go. ;)

And Peanut? Are you having a crack at my Surname? Coz surely you can come up with something better than that!

Looks like you were right! Thanks for the game on the weekend, was played in good spirits. Look forward to playing you guys again next year.

Absolutely... Obviously a vast improvement. You guys have a couple rippers going around. Handy big blokes. 22 in the middle is a raking left foot. Whole side had an real crack.

The comp is far better when more sides are competitive. Nobody likes giving or getting 30 goal floggings.
