Thompson as scapegoat

I am pretty sure everyone here is going to have a membership in 07. When I go to the footy I cheer for the Cats (slag the opposition a bit) and genrally support the club. I was even saying Geelong will make the finals up until the loss to the Kangaroos.

Who gives a sh1t if you have a whinge on a message board. However it is an entirely different thing to create and sign petitions and all that other rot that some of the supports we doing.

Not too sure - there's a few who won't (Your Renegade's etc).

That's why I get annoyed with complete and utter morons liek Rennis Witham. Starting mindless junk that disrupts the club.

Thompson is meant to be really good coach just players havnt fully matured yet thats what Hunt and Bartel told us last year they played cricket for us

I was disappointed that they decided to keep Thompson, because I have serious doubts over his ability to coach at AFL level. However, now that the decision has been made by the club, I'll be buying a membership and hoping that Thompson proves me wrong.

I don't think he's a scapegoat - plenty of players and administrators also cop a pasting on this forum. But he's not a sacred cow, either, and I reserve the right to get stuck into him in 2007 if he doesn't get it right. ;)

Whatever some may have wanted to happen (and yes I wanted Bomber sacked too) we are stuck with him until the end of the next season. i think there are a number of coaching contracts up next year and the club will have a better talent pool to draw from. But Bomber does have a chance next year. The club have removed all these "other" responsibilities that were getting in his way as coach and opened the way for him to just coach our side. This can have 2 effects IMO.

1. The side bounces back and finishes the year well. A top 6 finish with at least one win in the finals. This is Bombers best chance.

2.The side finishes 7-8 (and out in the first week of the finals) or 9-11. This time Bomber has no excuses because fitness has been addressed and he has had minimal other distractions to his coaching. then he will be told goodbye.

The board have manouvered Bomber next year so that if the side fails again then the Blame can really be placed on his shoulders. Very clever really. May not be what we fans would like but the board saves paying him out.

Are you saying that there are more people out there like Renegade?? I was really hoping he or she was a unique individual!

Obviously in 2004 and 2005, Thompson had a bit of tactical nous about him, as we did well with a side that was agreed to have potential, but not quite ready yet. Then, in 2006, we obviously had a dog of a year... but was that to do with bad coaching or the fact that Thompson didn't get as much chance to coach as he has previously (with all the extra stuff to be doing, maybe it took it's toll on his coaching as the review has found).
Maybe, the tactical nous IS still there, but wasn't shown in 2006 for those reasons... and maybe now that those extra things are taken off his shoulders, he could get us back to the 04,05 style of play.
I'm not in any way defending Bomber, but rather thinking that we should reserve our judgment until mid-07. We'll know for sure by then. If we're in top8 at Rd 12, then give him the rest of the season... but if we're in bottom 8, then turf him and get someone else!

edit// jsut seen your post CF - similar thoughts!

I'm not sure about the whole fitness thing being a non-issue. Supposedly the effects of bringing in a new fitness regime (i.e. new fitness and conditioning coaches) don't occur till 18 months of the start of it. Take from that what you will - just don't do a Grant Thomas and call for cuts to the fitness when there are a couple of blokes down with hammys.

I don't mean this in a nasty way - but how the hell can top 6 and 1 finals victory be acceptable? I don't think people realise that he's already had 7 years to build a premiership side, and now most fans are already preparing for another wasted season.

The prerequisite for next year should be a top 4 home and away finish at an absolute minimum, followed by finals success. We keep hearing the neverending bullsh*t from Thompson's mouth about maturity of the playing list, experience, blah blah blah, well it's time to deliver.

I met Thompson once at a hotel in Tasmania after a preseason game Geelong played at North Hobart. He struck me as a coach who demanded respect, but at the same time could be a mentor to young players. He was not full of himself, and was willing to have proper conversations with all present, no matter what shape and form they approached him in. From this day he had my respect.

On a side note, at the same time Thompson was engaging in genuine conversations with the Tassie cats, Sanderson was busy at a corner table flexing his muscles for the scrags that had turned up.

Obviously his plans have not been a success, and I am not sure whether years as the top cat have expanded his head... What I am sure of though, is that under Thompson, with inferior lists, Geelong has played some breath-taking footy. We have blown sides out of the water, and looked a million dollars. At the same time though, we have played some horrid football... How much of this form differential is Thompson's fault, however, is debatable.

Given that Thompson is with us next year whether we like it or not, I am prepared to accept that his dismal support staff (which the report seemed to point the finger at) were the reason for our bad form. I remember a decent bloke... A man who after round 2, was undoubtedly in the elite group of AFL coaches. Anyone watch him on Talking Footy after round 2? I was impressed again.

I am optimistic - whether I am looking through rose coloured glasses will only remain to be seen... For those of you who doubt him, remember, this is his one year... If geelong dont perform, he is gone... So lets get behind him.

Also, although I have been flamed before for talking about 'cultures' at Geelong, we always perform best when underdogs, and poorly as favourites... Everyone has written Geelong off for next year, but watch for big things!!!

I was trying to look at it all from the Boards perspective in my above post, not mine. Of course I'd love a top 4 finish and maybe to the PF at least. I agree with what you have said, but the Board doesn't think like we do or else he would be sacked by now.

Good post, but the problem is Thompson's "one year" will end up being just like the preceeding 43.

Fantasy land board....

Why was there rumors of player rifts and poor communication from bomber during the year. Where there is smoke there is fire and to anyone that was ******ed enough (me) to go to the hawks v cats game in the final round they'd have seen a team with 0% of respect for the club and the coach.

RememberME you truely are hocked up on goof balls and wearing rose tinted glasses.

Possibly the same reason there were rumours about Thompson, Kingsley/Wojcinski, Secretaries/Ex-Girlfriends, Loris being involved or not involved - ie, it could just be a load of crap.

Just read this in The Age re Melbourne Victory coach, Ernie Merrick - "Things have turned full circle for Merrick in 12 months. A year ago, he was being vilified as his side crashed out of finals contention; now, Melbourne is the best-supported team in the league and winning plaudits for its playing style".

Immediately made me think of Thompson. Sport is a fickle thing people. Success one year is no guarantee of success the next and failure one year in no guarantee of failure the next. I'm not saying Thompson will definitely turn it around next year, but I don't believe next year is a write off as many seem to be suggesting.

Isn't the Sydney coach in the reverse situation ?
I think his team won the championship last year and now they're struggling so Anthony LaPaglia is trying to make him disappear Without A Trace ?

Honestly we are stuck with Thompson for now so can we all give the Bomber Bagging a rest until at least the preseason cup commences. One does get sick of people go round and round the same ol merry-go-round

Maybe - but its the off-season and IMO its still a step up on talking about the latest follicle news emanating from the player group.

Even though it was only a Wizard Cup, and the form didn't continue in the regular season, seeing the boys holding up the cup was enough to keep the faith!

Yeah I remember thinking during the Collingwood game "Must keep the faith because they are rewarding me so well".

You can have the preseason - and yes it's good they won it - but I'd rather the highlights came in the season that matters.
