Reading Rucci's ( the 5th Beatle )article this morning he states that Adelaide is still looking at Waters and draft pick for Stenglein. If that's the case, then what have we got to offer Melbourne for Thompson?? If Adelaide were able to get both Waters and Thompson to Adelaide ( I doubt it ) it would be a major coup for us.

I still don't think we will get Waters. I know we would like him BUT I can't see WC giving him up. However, lets hypothetically assume that we get Waters and pick 28 for Stenglein, I still think we will get Thompson below his market value and either give up pick 24 or pick 28 in the final hour of trade week, assuming of course that Carr stays at Port Adelaide.

Having said that I just don't see WC giving up Beau Waters.

For some reason I doubt we'd accept pick 24 or pick 28 for Thommo.

That's such an insult we'd probably let him go to Port for marbles.

Agreed with all points.

It's extremely rare to see a First Rounder traded after just 1 year in the competition, especially one that has performed well.

In all honesty I think we have more chance of picking up Butler, but even that seems far-fetched.

I know its below his value but you are forgetting a couple of things here.

1) Port are not as keen as you are suggesting. In fact they won't even have a crack at Thompson if Carr stays put which seems likely.
2) If he doesn't get traded he will go into the pre-season draft. We don't lose anything but you do.
3) I am pretty sure that Melbourne will accept the best deal offered to them. If for example Port offered you pick 35 and Adelaide offered you pick 28 which one do you think Melbourne will take.

Demons will not let him go into the pre-season draft. They can't afford to. Adelaide loses nothing, Melbourne loses a player that they think is quality.

I think Melbourne are very likely to get less for Thompson than he is worth.

Prefer Waters over Butler .

Waters (pick 11 last year) and second round :)

Butler (pick 20 last year) and Pick 12
If a 2 club deal I hope these are our stated positions.

Thompson for a player (not draft picks) but who  Bode?? Bassett?, Massie?, Ladhams?

True, what did we get for Vardy, a premiership player and not a bad one at that, third round draft pick?

You don't always get true value for your players.

We got draft pick 58 or 54 for Vardy because of the circumstances similar to the ones that Demons face with Thompson.

I don't think Bode or Bassett will be traded and I doubt that Melbourne would give up Thompson for Massie or Ladhams. If they did it would be almost a day light robbery.

Out of Massie and Ladhams I think Demons would go for Ladhams who has more potential and is more versatile.

Look the kid can play !!!

But look at his bio on the demons site and it doesn't say he's a champion in the making.
Injury prone career so far, it is still a risk on our behalf and we would want to not include Stenglein in the deal as we can get more separating the 2 deals.

Forget this season, but on 2003 form both players can be good players for us or another team.
I'm happy to keep both, but they both can play when in form and hungry.

I'm not trying to be biased and overrate Thommo but in all honestly after he went down with a foot injury so did our intensity in the midfield.

It was no coincidence that we got drilled in clearances, hardball gets and tackles once Thommo was out of the side.

I really hope that we can get a fair deal out of this but it appears 50-50 at this stage IMO.

And thats even more reason why Melbourne will not let him go into the pre-season draft and get nothing for him.

I understand how important Thompson is to your midfield BUT I am sure that when it comes to final hour of the trade week, Melbourne will give in and take something for him.

In a pefect world Thompson would be worth more than Pick 24 BUT the situation is far from perfect from Melbourne's point of view.

I'd prefer Matthew Bode over pick 24 anyday and I think most Demon supporters would agree with me in saying this.

Could you see Bode being used to secure Thompson?

I can.
24 is still a handy draft pick for us, and who knows Bode may be thinking he needs a new opportunity, given he wasn't getting a go last season with Craig (in assistant role + head coach) who was preferring other options as midfield coach.

Im hearing this and I just cant believe it. Stinger is a great player and we deserve a great player in return. However I cannot see WC letting go of Beau at all let alone with a DP aswell.
Waters IMO is more of a chance to come to the AFC than Butlers purely on the homesickness factor, however if WC had to get rid of one I think they would get keep Beau.
From all reports Butler is loving it over there but as I have said countless times before beau has mixed feelings and if these feelings are strong enough WC might just cut their loses early so they can at least get something in return in Stinger. Who knows what will be offer next year? They may not want to risk it.
In saying that though I dont think this will happen as Im sure WC will push Beau as hard as possible for him to sign on as I would hope Adelaide would do if the situation was reversed.
Anyway it will be interesting to see the outcome, oh how it would be to be a fly on the wall come trade week. :D

Whats the prediction with Stenglein trade: an early deal or last minute.

Somehow I suspect both clubs would like it taken care of early, so they can turn their attention to other deals.

I agree, I have no inside knowledge on this aspect but both clubs would by now have a pretty good understanding of what each club is willing to deal with, they have been having trade talks for over a month now.
I think both clubs will fish around for a little bit just in case their is something else but if nothing is there move on quickly.
Im hoping for Beau but I think the end result will be Scott Thompson and I wouldnt be suprised if The crows knew this all along.
I was suprised when JR and co came out so strongly in saying they wanted a specific player, Thompson is exactly what they were after. Coincidence?
Myabe is has also been a PR stunt aswell to try and gain some public respect after the Carey debactle.
Just an idea :D

As much as I like Thompson, he doesn't meet the criterea the club established.
Iam convinced they'll seek a bigger prize - Waters + ??
They want either a midfielder or ruckman, so unless there's something from left field.

I suspect they won't get cornered thios time as they did with the Carey/Johnson scenario = thats the basis of my thoughts.

Not sure.

I would like it to be done early so we have more time to assess other options that might arise.

Last I heard the 2 clubs were still a fair way apart so I doubt it will get done before friday

Maybe the Eagles are hoping the Thompson deal stalls, and the Crows have to play the Stenglein card.

If the Thompson deal goes through, it'll leave the Crows definately with the upper hand.

You mean Thompson deal to Crows without involving WC?????

In all honesty IF Stenglein and Thompson deals are separate I would say Thompson deal will be done in the last hour of the trade week.

Your right Thompsons deal will be last minute, which maybe the only reason the Eagles will hold out a bit longer, in the hope they can be involved in a 3 way deal.
This way the Eagles will only lose pick 12, already rejected by the Crows.
