Could it be that deep down Bomber prefered Gaz to go, and keep the rest of the squad together. He saw the circus all year, and believed that the rest of the squad were more valuable than Gaz. Had he stayed for a 400k increase it would have meant a Bartel and Wojo, or a Mackie, would need to be traded. We would have needed to trade decent player just to keep within the cap. It would have left us vulnerable to GWS as Selwood would have been paid unders.

So maybe he thought in his communist way, that this was a better outcome for all.

Re: Bomber Strategy Re Gazza

Nope.

What consumes a coach with whose team has the chance to win the GF?

Answer: winning the GF.

Bomber would have been looking at everything through that prism. There is no way he was sabotaging Gary. He was using everything he could to get as much out of him as possible. I think he was seriously frustrated with our best players effectiveness (inc Gary) against the top sides. It magnified when it was about Ablett becasue of all the other controversy. He said other stinging comments about other players during the year, but those comments sank without a trace. I remember one about Mooney, but I can't give a link. He made an offhand remark about a not so great game Scarlett had earlier in the season. Would have been backpage news had it been about Ablett.

Clearly irony isn't a strength of our posters, SJ. Hit the mark beautifully.:thumbsu:

Agreed Reg. IIRC, Ablett was played forward while resting last year too at times, so was just a natural progression from there I thought.

Was laughable some of the stuff the media was coming up with throughout the year. My favourite was them trying to read Ablett's body language after the Prelim. When Geelong were shown leaving the ground, the camera only focussed on Ablett, visibly upset, however it didn't show other players. Wasn't until 10 or so minutes later during the post-match coverage they showed some other Geelong players in the rooms, and they were just as upset. They didn't question if Hawkins was going to GC though, despite the footage showing him just as upset, if not more. However Ablett being visibly upset meant it was supposedly his last game. Even during the week it was questioned on footy shows.

If the OP is on the money, then didn't Bomber get what he wanted? Why did he leave if things turned out as he planned? I would think he would be more inclined to stay if he got what he wanted. And from what your saying he did.

come on, it was pretty common knowledge that he was leaving. everyone knew it, the television people certainly knew it, and thats why they showed that vision at the end of the prelim. hasnt it been confirmed that it was an agreement prior to the start of the year that he would go to GC? i think the cameras had to be on him to see how he would react to his last game for geelong. if you think that it was a media beat up and just because 'he was out of contract' then fair dinkum. it was a focus because everyone except Cookie and his teammates were completely aware of what was about to happen..
