Saying Thornton in Fiji....

Kinda almost saying that Thornton will re-sign so as not to appear an ogre to CFC and supporters and allow us to retain our PSD pick.

Also mentioned how CFC told him their intentions to pick him up if he doesn't re-sign.

Amazing how managers talk different after the fact... but I think we'll end up re-signing him.

Also we have about 1million free still in our cap.

Certainly just about confirmed that Thornton will be FB for the Blues next year - Welcome back T-Bird!

Also this now puts an interesting slant on the J.Russell issue. Is it possible that we can still do a deal with a club, ie: Port, Ess, Nth or Brisb de-list a player that we would want, we then take that player with pick 1 in the PSD and let Russell go through to one of the clubs above?

Yeah it almost sounded like he conceded defeat... he had that tone in his void that the party leader that loses the race to be prime minister puts on during their conceded defeat speech.

Thornton will re-sign soon.... I feel it.

Wasn't much there. There general theme was, "We'll reasses when Brett gets back". My guess is Brett will call the shots, not his manager. But, I hope you guys can re-sign him rather than wasting a PSD on him.

You're right JJ. Amazing how they change their story. Good see he's better than even money to stay with the blues

Any news on Russell?

I'm sure it could happen, but may be considered draft tampering...

Yeah he will be good for the team after all of this, will bring a positive vibe with him when pre season starts.........actually maybe not.

Definitely sounded that way to me. His manager said Thornton would have no problems walking back into the club "with his tail between his legs"... It was put to him (as another poster has pointed out) that Thornton wouldn't want to aggravate Carlton any more by putting an exhorbitant price on his head when we have said we'll re-draft him in PSD regardless.

I think he will see the light once he thinks about the benefits of staying in Melbourne and not having to relocate to Tassie!

Not sure if you remember years ago Wayne Campbell almost walked out on the Tigers? As it turned out he was convinced to stay, ended up Captain a few years later and played out the rest of his career with the Tigers and was a darn good player and clubman.

There are many reasons why a player may want to leave, my thoughts are that things can't be too bad between him and the coach otherwise it would have been in Pagan's best interests to trade him. I think he is just tired of the beltings we have been subjected too and the lack of stability.

Things will start to turn for us next year and it will become a better place.

Could be Tassie & another wooden spoon all while having to felch pelchin and Kennett!

I still like the way "big bad bustling negotiator" Chris Pelchin (according to Hawk fans) did not even get the time of day.

"our pick 6 is off limits" - meaning he thought he could dictate the terms

News Chris: 16 Premierships, a proud history and supporterbase ... WE ARE NOT THE KANGAROOS.

We're Carlton .. fcuk the rest. We shoved his arrogance back up his ass.

I didn't hear the interview with McConville his manager, but reading between the lines, he was either going to Hawthorn or re-sign with Carlton. Fingers crossed!!

OMG! His manager came out and said that Thornton did not want to remain at the club and wanted to go to Hawthorn... that says he does not want to re-sign with the Blues IMO!

I think Brett will re-sign knowing were going to get him either way.

he'll want to save face.

Because they obviously don't believe what his manager is saying in public. Bret probably just said "I'm off to Fiji, take care of things for me. I'm happy to go the Hawks if it comes to it", and his manager has turned that into "Bret will not be at Carlton next year under any circumstances. He will only go to the Hawks. If you don't trade him he will put himself into the preseason draft will $800K on his head".

Basically, McConville is a cowboy, and needed to be put back in his box. Look how quickly he is back tracking now that we held our nerve. Now that he has lost (and he has lost, they're now saying we have about $1m space in the cap), negotiations can be recommenced with Bret and an agreement will be reached before the PSD. Once that occurs, Russell will be left with no choice but to re-sign as well. Once that occurs, we will be free to draft whichever hack we want in the PSD with our first pick.

The lesson from this is don't believe what player managers and opposition recruitment managers say in public during trade week. Make no mistake we had a big win this week. We may still trade both players 12 months down the track, but it will be on our terms for a fair price. You would think that it would only take relatively modest onfield progress next season for them to realise that we're a club going place and for them both to want to stay and be a part of it.

You'd make a great poker player.

I think that the Sydney game in Rd 22 definitely left a sour taste in his mouth - defence was all over the shop. I watched him try and chase down Goodes to no effect (when he ran along the boundary in the forward pocket to kick that great goal). Sitting right on the boundary as Goodes sprinted past me - you could see the pain on T-Bird's face. I think he felt towards the end of the season that too much was expected of him to cover everyone down back. You can tell how much it effects him when he is beaten.

He should jump on a plane from Fiji to Dublin and go hang out with Setanta - get some backline bonding happening early. If he stays next year - hopefully the youngsters in Setanta and Bower will strengthen the spine, leaving Thorno to cover the more mobile forwards.

Congratulations Hawthorn..... Best traders of 2006 :thumbsu:

You guys are so great, I'm being serious. I mean besides the fact you only beat one finalist in the entire season yet think you will win next years premiership, you are just so cool. I am simply in awe of your brilliant trading tactics and your ability to make the finals consistently throughout the last decade, unbelievable! I don't think you guys even realise how unbelievably brilliant you are. In my honest opinion if you dont win the next 800 premierships in a row, then you will have failed. You are just so cool and brilliant, I can't get my head around it.

I love Pelchan's tactics and how succesful he was for you this year, just a class outfit.

GO HAWKERS!!!111!!!111232

PS- Tassie is almost as awesome as the brilliants Hawks! In saying this, nothing can be as brilliant as Hawthorn, such is their unbeleivable brilliance. Just brilliant!
