First half of the season was pretty grim, but even taking it into account, I think we got what we wanted out of the season. There was more chance than not that it would take a while for the cogs to turn, but they have and we have made genuine strides. It is an 8 from me.

I couldn't see us winning another game in the first half of the season - that is how bad we were. So compare that to now and it is pretty what they have achieved in so little time.

Must also take into account that we played Carlton and North only once. Play them twice, two more wins possibly.

Cutler and Schache the disappointments but both have plenty of time.

Looking like a competent footy team in the second half of the season is the high light
Dont think you are the only one who was disappointed in Schache this season. Sad that we can be disappointed with a 19 year old in his second year. It just shows how our expectations far exceed what is reasonably possible in many situations. IMO we should be elated he has committed for another 2 years & that ALL our young guns have shown massive potential. Some of the older listed players have disappointed me in several ways far more than Schache.

We were pretty unlucky with our draw when you think about it, our double-up games were telling.

Richmond jumped up to be a top 4 side, Port improved dramatically from last year, Essendon obviously weren't the 18th best side & we played the reigning premiers twice... Should be able to look forward to some mroe favourable double-ups next year

We say that every year and we end up like the kid from deliverance.

SINCE Round 12 only four clubs have averaged 90 points per game.

Since the Lions’ bye, new coach Chris Fagan has had his team playing some scintillating football.

In the past 11 weeks the Lions rank No.4 in the AFL for attack and No.1 for scores per inside 50. They are playing damn good, attacking football and, as revealed on The Drill podcast, 11 of their players have taken considerable steps forward in 2017.

WOW! Looking at what Fagan and co have done in one year imagine what they'll be able to do in another year or two. With a good trade period and another good run with injury in 2018 we could go further up the ladder than expected.

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the injuries. Being able to field 19+ listed players in the neafl each week has created better development for the kids and pressure for positions each week. Does that make the drs, physios, and strenghtening coaches the unsung heroes of this season.

Re Schache, i have no doubt he has the skills and maybe a victim of second year syndrome and im sure the contract kerfuffel mid season didnt help, but he needs to harden up, get a bit of mongrel in him. He gets pushed off the ball to easily, needs to crash the pack more, chase harder in defence and be more mobile around the ground. He seems to have all the confidence in the world at neafl level but looks a bit lost when he gets to afl level. Hopefully, a big preseason with strength n fitness and a cup of cement will see his confidence and aggression at afl level reap the rewards he is capable of.

I actually disagree regarding the confidence in the neafl part. It took him weeks to build confidence after he signed on and then he lost it again. Even last week in the neafl he was angry and frustrated and did not look confident at all. Just my 2c.

That's my take on it as well. He is a concern at this stage but let's see him after another preseason and a month or two with family. Is crucial for us going forward.

Agreed. I think as he gets older and more mature we'll see Josh get through any problems he is facing. He loves the club and has a great support structure in place so we'll give him every chance to be the player we know he can be.

Hopefully one of the big areas of focus/improvement next year will be organisation in our forward line. Josh has often been visibly frustrated by not being honoured on leads (not always good leads, I might add). If we're organised, and if he and our other KPFs are leading into better spaces, then he'll get more of the ball, and both he and the team will have a happier and more productive time.

Achieved a lot more than I expected in the space of a year.Skill level improved dramatically, game plan in place and being bought into by most players.Great leadership from Noble, Fagan and Beams.Consistent selection with clear direction in what players need to fix to get back in when dropped.Obviously alot more competitive for longer periods in games. These things have me happier as a Lions supporter than I have been in a long time.A 9 for me

Happy with your 2c, more problems than i thought. Thanks for the correction. Better not get rid of Close just yet then. I really hope he comes good

I honestly can't see how the season could've gone much better. I think judging the team on ladder position this year of all years isn't helpful. We won two more games than last year and yet still came last.

I voted 9 because I can't see many negatives in the youngest team in the comp and I hope that people voting 6 or lower brace themselves. If this year's injury run is an aberration and we lose key personnel, we could just as easily stall next year.

im interested to hear lions fans thoughts on claye beams?
i think the bloke has major upside just cant seem to get a run at due to injury.
26 next year surely a make or break year for him.
anyways as a tigers fan i can see you guys killing it in 2-3 years with the list you have.

Injuries have really hurt his career. He has lost a fair bit of pace and is boarder line too slow for AFL these days. But he is a level above the lower grades

Claye goes hard at it, never gives up, has a good footy head and still had a very kick. Is a bit slow these days. I see him as a good teacher and leader in the neafl and a player still good enough to fill a hole for 4-6 weeks for injuries. I put harwood in the same basket.

I just chucked this in on the main board for our best 22 for the year. Figured I'd chuck it in here so others can rip it apart...

B: Rich - Andrews - Witherden
HB: Mayes, Mcstay, Robertson
C: Bastinac - Zorko - Taylor
HF: Mcluggage - Hipwood - Robinson
FF Barrett - Walker - Lester
R: Martin - Beams - Rockliff
I: Cutler - Berry - Gardiner - Mathieson

As I have said before, already I have Allison ahead of Cutler.

Funny, he's the last one I wrote down after a bit of indecisiveness, would've had Cox in before Allison, but there looks to be a bit of upside with Cox & Allison

It was clear when filling my team that we are lacking in the forward area. The fact that I went with Lester, mcluggage & Barrett - none of whom I'm convinced with yet & someone who spent most of the year injured says a bit.
