Have previously posted this thread before but after reading some of the comments on here about deledio after the Kangas game i thought it may be worth discussing...

...Deledio oozes talent but still lacks a hard edge for my liking...

...have yet to see lids impose himself physically on a game and extract the 'hard ball gets' consistently like a martin/cotchin/foley/king even tucky...

...with his class/age/experience lids ought to dominate and influence a games outcome now like a lenny hayes but martin and cotchin leave him for dead in that respect....

...always get the impression lids coasts along on his talent...

...great contested mark here, a flashy run there, a big booming kick here...they always make the highlight reel...

...get a move on lids your 25 and at the peak of your powers you wont be a young prodigy forever...

...thoughts..?!?!..

What has changed???? Lids forte never was a extractor or a general.

his strengths are his speed marking and kicking. Always an outside mid forward always will be. A player usually can't change their spots!

Some like to compare him with other inside players. Lids is Lids and Martin is Martin, they complement each other for the differences they bring but they are not the same. That is okay!! It is not a mental thing, they are simply different physical specimens with complementarily different roles. Like Richo was always a winger you can't change a players DNA to suit a position if it doesn't suit.

Lids doesn't have the relative, strength and agility to dominate inside, but he has the speed and skill and reach to dominate outside or as a tagger on the likes of Goddard or go forward. Nothing wrong with that , he is just a different player with different strengths, like Franklin who will never have a straight run up kicking for goal, You can mould a players desire and team with various players but rarely can you mould the inherent physical abilities of a player. Like why Nadal is so much stronger on clay due to the way he hits the ball. We should be glad we have Lids and let him play his own role, it doesn't mean he wasn't worth a number one pick just because he may not be the strongest inside player in the world!:thumbsu:

Nothing to worry about here...

It's great to have a player of Lids calibre 'up our sleeve'. ;)
He has never been a workhorse, blue colar type and for too long many here have almost insisted he become an AFL enforcer... it's just not in his character... that's OK, not everyone is so intense & single minded.

However, with the arrival of Cotch & Dusty & Conca & even the likes of Grigg we have a greater spread.

IMO Lids will be the icing on the cake for us... when we climb the ladder over the next couple of years he will come into his own as the games premier inside 50/goal assist player as well as 'finisher'.

Still his #1 fan. :thumbsu:

Edit: Good post Mr Magic.

Turned 24 last week
As for his output I think that any player that uses it as well as Lids does is value for money and the position he plays on the field at half back can reduce the forseen value of his performances, but it is still there.
His last quarter touches when he went to the midfield played a real role in our win.

...well said, no argument there...:thumbsu:...

...my concern though is that at 24 years of age, generally regarded as the peak of a players playing age, lids 'dominated' games are few and far between...

...or even to be in the consistently rated top players for the RFC...

Martin will be a superstar, Cotch not far behind and Conca could join them not forgetting JR. At times they will take the limelight off Lids. Bearing in mind team glory/success is what counts , not individual accolades!!
Lids has won our best and fairest in tough times several times. When he gets shifted to more a wing forward role he can impose himself more on the game but we are not a complete team or premiership force yet to necessarily do that. There are a few ingredients to be added to the team yet. What we currently are seeing is just a taste, and we still are in a building mode!

We just need patience IMO but it is exciting for the Tigers!!!

After years of waiting for Deledio to become a game breaker, I'm starting to think that he is more of a finisher much like Didak is at the Pies. What I mean by that is he is of best use when others do the grunt work and get the ball out to him in the open where he can use his skills to great effect. The difference between them is that he will still go in and win his own footy when he needs to.

All i can say is this. If thats what a quiet game equates too and people have problems with Lid's game, then we are in a bloody good position. Had a birds eye view of ground where he was patrolling more often than not and I can categorically say that his disposal lead to at least 3 direct shots at goal for us.
Havent seen a better kick than this kid on both sides, they are like laser beams to a coordinate. ;)

hint that he wants to come to richmond???? :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

A big part of this for me is reliably getting all players playing their role in the team in a consistent/solid fashion when this occurs players trust each other knowing things will happen they relax a bit more & play to their strengths more often than not & thats when we see more consistency, confidence and improvement. Lids is no less a part of this formula than anyone else in the team. As with the rest of the team his best is yet to come.

Thanks for the perspective Coggs, absolutely spot on :thumbsu:

I believe the coaching staff are killing aka Wallet.
Playing defence, then when he goes in the middle he has to tag. Let lids play in the middle and tell him to take the game on.
Last night he played, half back, then he went to CHF (last quarter) then told in last quarter to go in middle and tag Swollow.
Talk about being confused!
Last year he was left in one spot and he dominated of half back.
I believe Lids needs to go in the middle and now with Jackson out he needs to go in there.
Batchelor can go in defence next week

When moved into the middle in the 4th yesterday he had an immediate impact, set up Jack and Dusty for goals. Batch to come back in so Lids can stay in the middle/fwd.

He's a star! playing down back aswell so dont expect him to have an impact like he would if he was playing in the midfield.

Had a great impact in the midfield. With Dusty and cotchin playing like they are, and foley working into some form, deledio should be moved into the midfield. Play him on the oppositions best player (ie goddard against st kilda) and force them to be accountable. We had deledio on Petrie at one stage, with edwards on harvey and grimes on thomas. It clearly should have been Grimes on Petrie, Edwards on Thomas and Deledio on Harvey!!!

Just watched the game and while martin and Riewoldt get all the accolades, and deservedly so, i thought he and Cotchin were stand outs as well. Only mistake was that kick in the last quarter otherwise all his possessions were great. His handballs were always to team mates under less pressure or he was already a move ahead waiting for the one two to relieve pressure from himself.

Seemed to lay some good tackles especially that one where, i think it was pratt, was running full steam into him in the defensive 50. His move to the midfield and forward half paid immediate dividends and he is clearly at his most dangerous in the midfield/forward role.

Hopefully with Bacherlor back and Dea getting an extended run we will see Lids in the centre more.

Considering he was in the best five players when he arrived at the club in 2005 season, Deledio is now starting to flourish because there are better players around him. Cotchin, Foley, Grigg, Martin et al take the heat off him.

I still reckon he will end his career in the forward line as per Brad Johnson

me also, would have had him probably 5th or 6th best on for us, and petrie ahead of him for the other side at least.

I actually found it hard to separate Martin, Reiwoldt, Deledio and Cotchin.

Martin stood out more because of his four goals and his brute strength so i gave him the nod for BOG.

Reiwoldt was classy in the forward line and most of our scoring seemed to go thru him.

Deledio was just class, i reckon only one poor disposal in the last. Other wise his kicks and handballs always hit team mates no matter how much pressure was on him. Went for a couple of line breaking runs but Cotch fumbled a ball and the other Jacko or conca (one of our rangas) gave him a terrible handball back.

Cotchin had two poor kicks in the back half that stood out and the previously mentioned fumble otherwise he too was class. 8 clearances and 14 contested possessions. Kicked 2 vital goals in the last. Was quiet in the third but thats about it.

The good thing is they are our best 4 players and they are all starting to perform at the same time, and they are as good if not better than every other teams top 4. But if they play this well and we only beat the roo's by 9 points thats a worry. That being said i always felt after quarter time we were on the verge of breaking the game open and the roos were holding on for dear life.

I think he should be in the midfield and rested in the forward line. Like we have been doing with Martin and Cotchin.

Deledios strengths are his pace, long kicking and over head marking. I think it's a big waste having him in the backline. He could kick 20-30 goals easily a year.
