Opinion Thoughts on our Salary Cap position now?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Out: Wellingham, Dawes, Wood, Buckley, Tarrant, Young T, Ugle, Rounds, Ceglar

In: Lynch, Young C, Russell + 4 draft picks + 2 of rookie promotions or mature FA + re-signing of Krak + Caff + Johnson (veterans list)

Thoughts on our salary cap position after all this? Still tight?

Yep, as tight as a frog's a**. Remember the ins should really include Travis's contract.

Perhaps we have made room for Kurt Tippet? haha

edit "I hope not"
Nope fuch Tippett, I agree. Has the smell of death about him now.

Really surprised Siderknee went for him in the first place.
Wouldn't of thought he'd fit into the "culture".

Do you think that they would have budgeted for losing Wellingham and Dawes when they signed Cloke? Would our new signings have gobbled up all the space vacated by those two? (yeah probably)

Asked & answered your honour.

The leaving of the 3 players plus de-listings today, makes room for a few more players. Good list management by Pies. Don't forget DT becomes FA next year...so early planning for that event is probably already taking place imo.

Any talk of there being a massive squeeze now at Collingwood is just talk imo...considering Wood was supposed to be on $250,000+.

Club must pay 95% of TPP + ASA (being $9.992m) and my guess there will enuf room to bring in maybe 1 more higher paid player (Not Tippett) + 4 draft picks + pay bonuses to those players that have those clauses in their contracts. Considering what is going with Adelaide (paying players outside the cap) and penalties that might arise from that...if the club was even within spitting distance of 100% of the cap right at this point I would be quite surprised. No club wants to get even close to 100% for fear of going over.

So tight maybe, close well of course so yeah ...but nothing to panic about it. At the end of the day after 2013 season contracts are completed club would still have as a guess around 1.5%-2% free just in case (which equals $200K)

I still think we have more room than people believe.

The issue is, that far too many people listen to what the papers say. Where the papers say we're paying Cloke 800K or more, I'd venture a guess and say we're more likely paying him much closer to 650-700K. He will then go on the Vets list from 2014, which opens it up some more.

The papers need to paint the picture of Collingwood having a bursting salary cap. It generates interest and sells papers.

While I'm not arguing we have all the freedom in the world, the fact that we offered Sharrod a new 3 year contract, still signed Lynch and were still going after Young tells me it's not as tight as most believe.

I think we've made room for next year's out of contract players, namely Dale Thomas. If Dale has a blinder of a year, we're going to be hearing about it non-stop in the papers next year, and about how he wants to go to Carlton yadda yadda.

In all honesty, after the last 2 seasons of contract talk, I don't care anymore. You want to leave the best run club in Australia? F**k off then, we don't need you.

The Club existed before you were here, and it will continue on without you.

I think we will have some room there. Not a huge amount but a comfortable amount. If I were the club, I would be plunging the spare cash into front loading contracts. This along with imminent retirements next year like Didak and possibly Jolly it will mean we should have a fair bit up our sleeve in the coming years.

With free agency you need to be in a position to take opportunities when they arise. We also need to be prepared to fend off free agency approaches on our players like DT.

I also think we need to be & will be on the hunt for the inevitable spill of GWS & GC talent. As all that talent grows there will be very handy players that are underpaid & underappreciated. If you get the timing right & have some cash to splash we can inject some mature talent into our list to keep us up the top.

Just hope the Club learned from the Cloke fiasco and talks with DT early on about how they will manage the whole thing, so as not to cause another potential distraction come the back end of the season.

Not talking about the actual decision on whether he stays or goes, more on how the whole decision making process is best handled for the team's sake.

Hope they all just come out and say - will not even be thought about till after the finals, or something similar.

Anyway, I agree with you Ed, if any player wants to leave our club, don't let the door cork your arse on the way out.

Dale can also pull his finger out of this for next year.

I'm guessing you're not an accountant then? ;)

I'd be surprised if every club didn't have a total understanding of their (official) salary cap position down to the nearest cent.

Adelaide's crime wasn't to break the salary cap. Their salary cap position is fine. Their crimes are that they manipulated the draft and they made a secret payment to a player. (Yep, apparently they could have fit the contents of Tippett's paper bag within their salary cap if they'd wanted to - go figure  )

Cap has been managed really well.

We would have saved $$$$ in terms of replacing Wellingham + Dawes with Young + Lynch. Russell would not be on much either. 4 new draftees will also be on minimum wage after we have moved on Wood too who would have been on decent coin as the #2 ruck.

Lets not forget we also have Didak and Jolly coming out of contract at the end of the season and both are likely retirements. Both these guys would be on around 350-400k. Ditto Maxwell who is also out of contract.

This means we will find it easier to retain more players who we wish to keep ala Daisy Thomas with the cap being freed up and we will have $$$$ to also chase players via Free Agency too.

Club has handled our "bursting" cap really well Credit to them all.

Howdy,

I think I recall Didak and Jolly are on more like 500k, so a million b/w them - someone can confirm.

Let it be said Didak at the time was worth it but being his output since in the 2012 season was 11 games for 6 goals, wouldn't be too many forwards on that cash per goal, Sinclair kicked more. Not saying delist but hope there is some performance base in that contract. Would need to have a giant season to repay the faith and cash, retire as a dual premiership player would be a fitting end.

Jolly to me is still in out top 3 in importance, he plays well we win and win well - not to many others have the same effect, cloke and pendles the other two for mine. I really hope witts comes on and they tag team well. Can you get both in one team, not sure we want another tall up forward.

Sydney and the Hawks just seem faster with three talls than us.Our pace worries me, if we dont take a mark. Lynch, Goldy, Sidey, Cloke, Krak, Fas, Didak, Paine not known for pace that concerns the opp. A blistering 6ft 3 player would be awesome in the draft. Rusling size would be ideal - with good shoulders. I don't think we can rely on sinclair and elliot.

Thoughts...

I couldn't imagine it not being tight for 2013, but hopefully flexible enough to be creative like we have been this season.

That's all i can from a team competing for premierships.

Just a tidbit on the incoming players.... Prior to free agency the AFL itself said the compensation picks clubs would receive would be directly linked to what the incoming player will be receiving wage wise...

West Coast got pick 62 (Lynch)
Hawthorn got pick 66 (Young)

For a comparison Fremantle picking up Pearce (who are believed to be paying Pearce 450k Per Season o_O) -- Port Adelaide got compensation of pick 31

For this means that our blokes are getting paid absolutly scraps and seem to have signed more for the years and opportunity on offer than for per year $$

Add this to Wellingham, Dawes and Wood being culled (each could have been retained had they not chosen to leave - or in Woods case not being wanted - under current salary cap situation as we could NOT have signed free agents while guaranteeing we'd trade dawes)

In other words - I'd say there'd be a fair bit of space - not as much as we'd have liked with Cloke's contract being what it is but... there'd be space there and it seams as though the club is looking to keep under the 100% mark by maybe 3-4% just for safety's sake (aka another breakout year similar to what Beams just did - could be a Witts, Fasolo or even Daisy to another level)

Question. Each year does the salary cap go up a bit?
Yep.

The TPP figures for the coming seasons are as follows:
2011 - $8.21 million per club (final year of current agreement)
2012 - $8.787 million per club (7 per cent increase)
2013 - $9.139 million per club (5 per cent increase)
2014 - $9.632 million per club (5.4 per cent increase)
2015 - $9.92 million per club (3 per cent increase)
2016 - $10.2 million per club (3 per cent increase)

Additionally,

An Increase in ASA limits of 7%, 39%, 13%, (3% and 3%). ASA amounts will increase to $963,000 per club by 2014;
