Call me Alice and I’m through the Looking Glass, call me Dorothy from Kansas now tripping down the Yellow Brick Road but are we a real chance this year? Could we do an Essendon in 1993 when they won it before their time? Just listening to the tone of comment from Denis Pagan at the post match press conference ..
Quote
“We only played as well as the opposition allowed us to play, I think Geelong in the last eleven weeks has lost 2 games, there hasn’t been a defeat by more than a goal, there a pretty good side, I think their probably equal to a lot of the sides in the competition and their certainly in the top bracket and they’ve got a great opportunity..”

The tone he said this with , I just felt he would like his chance's with the a list like we have right now. Obviously Brisbane is favorite , but if it falls our way we might just have a chance … maybe I should be looking for the Cheshire Cat.!!

Well Alice, you probably answered your own question with that statement. We're certainly not such good side, that we will be at anyone anywhere, but if the dice rolls our way, we are certainly in with a chance. But the question is, how likely is it that the odds will favour us? We may have a dream ride through the finals, especially if we end up playing interstate sides in Melbourne each week. If teams follow form from here in, that scenario is quite likely. The bookies have us as 12 to 1, which is probably about right.

Essendon finished on top of the ladder in 1993: 13 wins, 6 losses and a draw. That is the only difference really. They were extremely lucky that year that there were no out and out powerhouses.

Nowadays, we have to contend with the likes of Brisbane, which back in 1993, were completely out of the picture.

No better time than the present. The very good teams will take their chances when they only have a sniff. At best i'd say we have a sniff of the flag but would need a lucky run with finals to have a chance of making the big one, where anything can happen.
