Now looking ahead to this Sunday's clash with Sydney Swans at the MCG, Thursfield said he would put his hand up for the big job on dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes if he's asked to, but more than that he's looking forward to getting back to play in front of the yellow and black faithful.

"If they want me to have a crack at him, then I would put my hand up. He has been in great form, though, and whoever gets him will have a tough day next week," Thursfield said.

Uh-oh.

Thanks Martin, well Chris Hyde's unavailable so......
Wasn't Wilt's first AFL game against O'Loughlin back in 2005?

Look nice puff piece trying to have us believe our backline is on the improve. I'll believe it when we stop conceding 20+ goals. For Thursfield and McGuane 6-7 year veterans to still be learning to play as a unit alongside Newman and Deledio is really accepting mediocrity.

Thursty was ok yesterday. We should be working on not letting the ball get down there with such ease though. Any defence will get cut apart with the amount of opposition F50's that we allow to happen.

I guess we were playing like our 33% strongest back line last week. No Newman, Grimes, Batchelor, Moore, Connors and arguably Astbury. Imo, our backline will look like this next year.

Thing is, we have 17 defenders, it is very difficult to pick a best 6.

"if they want me to have a crack at him I will put my hand up" hardly sounds like a bloke busting Dimmas door in to play on Goodes does it:o

Thirsty if he wants to take the next step needs to be taking on these guys each week not just waiting to see who the match committee give him. And he will wonder next why he is playing vfl next year and not on a clubs senior list;)

Yeah you can say that again. Go into a 57 point win with a microscope and make the article about the backman who kept his player quiet.

That is was LeCras is a good scalp but not all forwards need to get into it for it to be a bad day defensively.

lets see 17 you say.
Astbury- potential chb but imo more a forward. still early development.
Batchelor - flanker type who hopefully will become in time a part of midfield rotations. early development.
Conca - a long term mid learning the caper at hb.early development.
Connors - unaccountable turn over merchant to slow should not play back.
Dea - big bodied flanker straight ahead player early development.
Deledio - quality player of hb.
Farmer - small defender who is too slow and had long enough.
Gourdis - poorly skilled but athletic key defender has not shown enough but would give one more yr and keep over longer term duds. development.
Grimes - potentially the best tall defender we have early development.
Helbig - midfielder, could be developed in defense would be more accountable than many we play back. early development.
Houli - should not be playing in defense not even as a running player.
Jakobi - nice size nice mover and looks a good kick early development.
Mcguane - unskilled unthinking undersized dud.
Moore - should only be a running third tall option but only if he can regain some pace.
Newman - to slow imo to be in the backline. is unaccountable and it is time to move him further up the ground.
Orielly - will be 24 is still learning the caper but must make some strides forward next yr development player despite age.
Post - CHB has a yr to show he belongs just has to show significant improvement. development.
Rance - has improved but makes too many mistakes needs to eliminate these and become more assured and consistent in the air, obvious keeper atm, but would be looking for a replacement down the track.
Thursfield - would keep over mcguane but after 7 yrs has to go.

Theres 19 6 who i think are not really backmen and of the rest i dont think it hard to pick a best 6. one thing for sure the back line has a lot of work needed on it.

Bolded are not backmen. The only reason that they may have been seen down there is to help with the defensive aspect of their game. Astbury won't go forward when we have Roo, Vickery and Griffiths. If rumours are true, then we have been pushing for Trengrove. How can we fit Post, Astbury and Thursfield in a backline of Grimes, Rance, Moore and Trengrove?
