After watching Jay Schulz kick six goals during Richmond’s 19-point loss to Brisbane, Tiger fans can’t wait to see the brilliant youngster link up with injured spearhead Matthew Richardson against the Bombers next weekend.

Richardson missed the narrow loss to the Lions with a lower back condition but is expected to bounce back for the Essendon game at the MCG.

His absence - on top of the confirmation midweek that coach Danny Frawley would stand down at the end of the season – led many pundits to predict that the Tigers would become yet another Gabba mauling victim.

Enter Schulz. The 2002 first round draft pick made Brisbane’s three-time premiership winning defensive line look like park footballers, bagging a haul of six goals for the evening including all four of Richmond’s goals in the third quarter.

Richmond utility Greg Tivendale said the performance of Schulz would make the Tigers’ forward line a much more potent force when Richardson returns.

“I think to a certain extent ‘Schulzy’ filled the void,” Tivendale said.

“He kicked six goals but once (Richardson) comes back it’s a matter of kicking to the right options rather than just bombing it to him all the time.

“He’s a terrific talent and hopefully he can finish the season off strong. It’ll be good to have him and ‘Richo’ there – the tandem team.”

Tivendale believed Frawley’s decision to announce his resignation during the week had little effect on the mindsets of the players.

“That was Danny’s decision to resign and the boys were all disappointed with it because they love him as a coach but we’ve just got to move on now and finish the season well for him,” Tivendale said.

“That’s all he’s asking for and it was a good start tonight, we’ve just got to take that confidence into the next eight games.”

The same could be said when playing Ottens & Richo in the forward line,

more excuse's,

Neverless it was a fantastic effort by the boys on saturday night

No one can work in tandem with Richo, which is a major reason weve been a rabble for so many years.
Schulz will struggle to make an impact in tandem with Richo.
As long as Richo is our key forward, we will linger at the bottom of the ladder until he retires.

Fair point Diggler. But I would ammend that to no- one playing under Frawley/Geisch have been able to work in tandem with Richo. Wallace/Eade will know how to play these 2 blokes together.

Watch combinations like Hall/O'loughaln,Lloyd/Hird or Tarrant/Rocca.They compliment each other and rarely fly for the same ball. If Schulz can go on with the form he showed V. Brisbane it'll mean no more triple teaming of Richo. The future looks just a little brighter after Saturday night.

I agree evo, and the future does look promising. Can't remember where I read the comment, but I also agree that it was a good audition for the prospective coaches that would have been watching this match. They wuld have seen potential, and possibilities that they are able to work with. If we came out and showed nothing on Sat night, certain prospects may have quickly dismissed us as a right-off, and not even considered the appointment. The young guys showed on Sat night that it may be worthwhile coming to Punt Road. Let's hope.

The seargent was great on sat nite, but we needed asecond focal point......cambos miss was the turning point as a captain he shud have kicked it and that deflated the side, the kids were great although i still think that pettifer is awaste of space, hilton was good , newman superb, gaspar ....goodbye, ottens was goods early , stafford was great.....zantuc poor

I concur with Diggler.

I've enjoyed Richos effort this year and he is probably my number 1 love/hate of the club, nevertheless the one they call Diggler is right.

Richo worked well in tandem with Ottens in 2001 didn't he?
