After watching Jay Schulz kick six goals during Richmond’s 19-point loss to Brisbane, Tiger fans can’t wait to see the brilliant youngster link up with injured spearhead Matthew Richardson against the Bombers next weekend.
Richardson missed the narrow loss to the Lions with a lower back condition but is expected to bounce back for the Essendon game at the MCG.
His absence - on top of the confirmation midweek that coach Danny Frawley would stand down at the end of the season – led many pundits to predict that the Tigers would become yet another Gabba mauling victim.
Enter Schulz. The 2002 first round draft pick made Brisbane’s three-time premiership winning defensive line look like park footballers, bagging a haul of six goals for the evening including all four of Richmond’s goals in the third quarter.
Richmond utility Greg Tivendale said the performance of Schulz would make the Tigers’ forward line a much more potent force when Richardson returns.
“I think to a certain extent ‘Schulzy’ filled the void,” Tivendale said.
“He kicked six goals but once (Richardson) comes back it’s a matter of kicking to the right options rather than just bombing it to him all the time.
“He’s a terrific talent and hopefully he can finish the season off strong. It’ll be good to have him and ‘Richo’ there – the tandem team.”
Tivendale believed Frawley’s decision to announce his resignation during the week had little effect on the mindsets of the players.
“That was Danny’s decision to resign and the boys were all disappointed with it because they love him as a coach but we’ve just got to move on now and finish the season well for him,” Tivendale said.
“That’s all he’s asking for and it was a good start tonight, we’ve just got to take that confidence into the next eight games.”
