Pinched this from the Coaches Association and relates to the construction of the Coaches All Australian team. The Coaches Association has broken down the ideal construction of a team into:

  • a high half-forward - Deledio
  • five inside/outside midfielders - Edwards, Ellis, Martin, Mcintosh, Grigg, Newman
  • four inside midfielders - Cotchin, Miles, Lambert, Conca
  • a tall/medium-sized marking forward - Ben Lennon is the only one I can think of
  • a tall/medium-sized marking defender - Rance
  • two ruckmen - Maric...
  • medium defenders - Batchelor, Grimes, Batchelor, Houli (more of an outside?)
  • key forwards - Jack, Vickery (can put Vickery in as the 2nd ruck and then Griffiths goes here)
  • small defender - Hunt, Vlaustin

Based on what the coaches think is the ideal construct, couple of things stand out to me:
- We do not have enough inside mids (getting Yarran won't fix that. Neither will Bennell although he is pure silk). Vital that we either recruit for another inside mid or we develop over summer to ensure our inside mids are more than Cotchin and Miles. Conca IMO has scope to be a better inside mid than Miles if he can stay on the park. Smart, loves contested footy, quick and good distributor of the ball. Key is for him to have a preseason and then not get injured.
- Lennon is to go nowhere and must be further developed to ensure he becomes our permanent medium forward in 2016.
- We have no shortage of running outside players and medium defenders.

I'm sure I've missed players and haven't put a lot of thought into the above but thought it's worth breaking down the team into the ideal coaches construct.

So in summary, I'm going to keep banging the inside mids drum over summer and Lennon becomes key for us in 2016 in terms of the role we need him to play.

Agreed. In terms of value to our structure moving forward Ben Lennon is probably worth the seemingly ridiculous $$ he is demanding now. We need a medium forward with good hands to compliment our existing structure. It's a punt paying overs and we have made a point since dimma has come along of not paying on potential. That works at hawthorn because there has been the lure of a flag for the past half decade plus. We can't even win a final. You can only sell a dream for so long and expect buy in. How things play out with Lennon this off season will be very interesting.

Good OP.

It shows we have some deficiencies, especially inside. Also shows we have a good structure overall. I can see where the club might go looking for more grunt. Our back ups are OK, except for grunt inside mids.

You've got Batch in twice as well.

Hamish Hartlett is apparently that inside mid we're going for????? That'll be 2 hammers nailing it on the list.

I'd swap Houli and Floss's role.
2 rucks are Maric and Vicks.
Lloyd has been playing a small marking forward.
Thought there'd be 2 tall defenders as a listed position (>195cm)
And no listed small fwd position.

Interesting "ideal construction of a team)

We tried to get Hartlett, but he's not going anywhere. Hartlett plays more half back these days anyway, and plays it really well

There were two tall Defenders.
One tall/medium (Third tall role)
Two mediums and one small

So, for our defence we'd have

Talls: Rance, Chaplin
Tall/Medium: Grimes
Mediums: Batchelor, Vlastuin
Small: Houli
