Richmond will dedicate its final week of the 2003 season to football legend Jack Dyer.

Tigers coach Danny Frawley said the news of Dyer’s death, which came less than 24 hours before the club’s match against Port Adelaide on Sunday at Telstra Dome, had left the club in a state of shock.

“It’s been a rushed 24 hours,” Frawley said after the Tigers’ fighting 20-point loss to the ladder leader.

“We tried to pay respect to the Dyer name as best we could, but I really think that the next week will be the build-up for that. As I said it was a bit of a shock for everyone over the last 24 hours,”

“We didn’t have a lot of time to focus on that. It’s going to be a huge week for the club this week. Obviously, they don’t come any bigger names than Jack Dyer.”

The Richmond players were shown a short video tribute to Dyer before their Sunday afternoon clash, but the club will honour the former Richmond player and coach over the next seven days.

Frawley said the early part of this week would be emotionally driven, before Richmond plays Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.

It will be the last time the Tigers use their old club dressing rooms before they are demolished as part of the stadium’s redevelopment.

It is also expected there will be a minute’s silence in honour of Dyer before the round 22 game.

“We’ve got to make sure that as a club we’re really unified and this will bring the club together. More importantly next Sunday we’ve got to put our best foot forward, for a number of reasons,” Frawley said.

The Richmond coach said he had only met Dyer a couple of times, but that he had made a lasting impression.

“You’ve got to be in awe of those type of people. At the end of the day when you do meet people like that, like Teddy Whitten and Jack Dyer, you realise why they’re not only champion players but champion people. He was a real gentleman, and very humble.”

“My thoughts of Jack were sitting down on a Sunday with the family watching World of Sport. I think that’s been imprinted on everyone’s (memory) - people of my age, and obviously there’s an older generation.

“The younger generation, underneath me, and I’m talking about our younger players, they’ve just got realise when you put on the Richmond guernsey, the best player at the club has just passed away.”

Acting Tiger captain Matthew Richardson met Dyer once when he attended the opening of the grandstand at Punt Road named in his honour.

“There were quite a few people there that day, and he had the whole crowd in stitches. Just his wit, and the stories he told were fantastic,” Richardson said on Sunday.

“About a dozen of us had a photo with him that day and we actually got them signed by Jack and I’ve certainly kept that at home,”

“I thought it was a pretty big day for the club (today) and we needed to make sure we had a big effort because he is basically the Richmond Football Club, and we did talk about that a little bit before the game, what he meant to Richmond.”

Pathetic really. I like a few other would have thought that this weeks game (vPort) would have been the one for Jack. Sounds to me that because they lost, maybe they will save it for Hawthorn.

Are they implying that Hawthorn are a crap side????

For the record I was barracking hard for Richmond yesterday. I was devastated to learn another of the old school had passed away. My dad didnt believe me on Saturday Night when I told him. I really hated Port for not letting the Tiges win.

Interstate teams have no appreciation for what our legends mean to us.

I don't think so.

I think they're just saying it was a pretty rushed 24 hours.

Evidence of that would be that Spud grabbed an old video tribute to Jack Dyer to play to the boys.

It is difficult because due to his illness he hasn't been around the club for some years. A lot of the present day Richmond squad sadly have probably have never met the man. For this reason it needs to be instilled into them throughout the week exactly what sort of man Jack Dyer was and what he meant to the footy club. The only way to do this is to get hold of the people who knew him best or who were at the club when Jack was more involved with the club.

Sorry Spud...........but that eliminates you. Swallow your pride and put your insecurities on hold. You addressed the Saints when Loewe retired so get Sheeds or someone of his ilk down to the club this week.

Surely if time had permitted then Richmond legends who knew/had a first hand connection with Jack such as Tom Hafey, Kevin Sheedy, Royce Hart or dare I say it Kevin Bartlett, would have been invited down to the club to address the players. Even media personalities who had a bit to do with Jack like Lou Richards would surley be able to give the young blokes of today an insight into the man.

If a video tribute is all you can manage to pump the players up then it's a pretty sad state the club finds itself in.

So far tributes have been coming in thick and fast from far and wide from non-Richmond people.

I was wrapt with the efforts the cheer squad made with their banner on short notice, now I just want the club to do their bit. I imagine (i.e.hope) this week the club will do there utmost to honour his memory and contribution to both Richmond and Footy in general.

I somehow doubt that Port deliberately bending over so that Richmond could get a cheap and undeserved win would've been a good way to commemorate Jack Dyer's memory.

Should be a great game on Sunday.

I am sure that both teams will celebrate the life of Jack Dyer by playing great footy next week.

How good would it be if Tommy Hafey or even Sheeds addressed the players before taking the field on Sunday? That is really something worth pursuing!

Agree 100% as would 100% of Richmond supporters. Port gave us enuf charity with their poor kicking in the 3rd Quarter.

Tiges were never going to topple Port in their present state however they tried their best with what they had, which is all you can ask, and more than they've done in some other games this year. Just highlights that emotion alone is sometimes not enuf and confirms the offseason will be interesting.

Also (and I'll probably get shot down on this) I hope the players don't wear black armbands again this week against the Hawks. We mourned him against Port and will continue to do so. After all he is Richmond. Use this week to celebrate his colorful life. Educate the players about this blokes contribution. Dedicate the game to him by all means and use it as a spur but please don't wear the black armbands again this week.

You know, CJ, I was thinking exactly the same thing myself yesterday as I was listening in to the game on the radio.

I was secretly hoping, at three quarter time, that Rex would announce that Tommy Hafey had just pulled the 22 players aside into a huddle for a pep-talk for the final quarter.

And I'm certainly not, nor have ever been, one of those "bring back Tommy" types ... he's been well and truly past his used-by date for at least a decade or so now. However, just for the occasion ...

I reckon a pre-game chat from Hafey or Sheeds would not be out of the question (forget KB - he just doesn't have the same aura about him as the other two).

It might also be just the tonic for an off-season membership drive if such an inspiring win happened to come about ....
