If we didn’t beat Hawthorn in the last 2 seasons, I wouldn’t be convinced we were on the right path. They are defining wins for me. Not even a Geelong supporter could honestly deny that the Hawks are a modern day powerhouse. Ridiculous talent in the forward line. Hardnut midfield. Stable, solid back 6. Great coach and game plan, characterised by accurate, long kicking.

I’d like to hear some opinions on how we do it.

I re-watched our 2013 game against them and there are a few things from that which I’ll suggest, to start the conversation. I think it’s interesting that most of these are the opposite in the “why we suck against Carlton” thread.

Richmond won the clearances. 54 to 36.

Our best players played very well. Cotch got 3 votes. I’d say Deledio and Martin were unlucky not to get votes. Riewoldt played almost exclusively inside 50, pulling Gibson’s dacks down and wopping his shiny, waxed arse. Rance beat Buddy so convincingly that he even had time to put a new tatt on Buddy’s cheeks while he had his pants down.

The Hawks best players went missing. I rate Hodge and Roughy as A grade, but fair dinkum, if you didn’t watch until junk time in the 4th quarter, you’d assume neither was playing. You just don’t see them. Mitchell was good, but was forced to play defensively, so he didn’t hurt us much. Burgoyne was possibly their best, but only had 14 effective disposals.

The Tigers lesser lights really turned it on. Astbury dominated Gunston, who I gave 3 votes in the 2013 Grand Final. McGuane broke even against Lake, which I'll take as a victory. Flossy was amazing, especially in the 3rd quarter when it was there to be won, and it’s the best game I saw out of Newman, Foley, and Stephensen in 2013.

The Tigers game-day coaching looked better to me. The score was close at half time, and the Hawks had the momentum. Rain was coming. It pissed down in the 3rd quarter. Even in the squally wind and driving rain, when we were behind, the Tigers continued handballing and playing on. For example, Houli had more handballs than in any other game in 2013, handballing in situations he ALWAYS winds up on the left boot. IMO, that must have been Hardwick’s call. And it worked on the day, even though it didn’t really fit the conditions.

Why do you think we play well against the Hawks?

Be nice RunningBounce if that game could be the minimum standard RFC bring week in etc ...:thumbsu:

Amen to that, brother! Hard to believe it's almost the same 22 blokes that got flogged in the Dreamtime game and by North.

One of the biggest factors IMO is mental... Hardwick gave the group a lot of confidence in themselves by providing a little inside information about his old team and providing genuine belief that we could win.

It's the opposite to when we play Carlton... We had 22 players with a strong belief thanks to our coaching group. Massive synergy there and good teams ride on that belief all year - our next step.

Hopefully Hampson and Craig Williams can give us that info on the Blooze

We match up well with the Hawks. Morris has been vital both times, has never let Rioli give them a spark.

Richmond have the right players at their disposal who can curb/restrict the influence of our best players and you've also got the right match ups and have beaten us comprehensively during the last two clashes in every department. Rarely if ever have Franklin, Roughead and Gunston have all had poor games on the same day. You've got Rance, Chaplin and Grimes, three good key defenders who have gotten the better of their opponents in the recent matches.

One thing that Richmond do very well against us that other sides tend to struggle at, is that Richmond go with a relatively small and quick line up and try and open us up on the rebound with our lack of pace. A perfect example is when Richmond were able to go coast to coast in a flash during the first quarter last year when Chris Newman kicked that goal. Rather then playing 2-3 genuine talls up forward, I've noticed that Richmond likes to bring in a few 'extra runners' and that's so far worked out well for them. No doubt having a few ex-Hawks at the Tigers has also helped with these results. Richmond is one of a few teams that can easily rip apart our game plan on their day.

Cheers that's a very honest and no B.S post. Both years they were our best 2/3 games if not best. Thing is the Hawks have the kind of team that if you don't work hard the 4 quarters they can still reel you in.....Also I can't remember the last time Hodgie had a ripper against us, just quality + a Tiger supporter ;) :thumbsu:
