One line shows the complete ineptitude of our cricket leaders

"Seven or eight days ago, everything was going swimmingly"

Really?

Yes we won a test but

- Our captain had made bugger all runs

- Our captain's tactics were under fire

- Our vice captain had made bugger all runs

- Our vice captain had come under fire for negative comments about Perth pitch to 22 year old with self doubts

- We still had no spinner or no 6 batsman

- Our best batsman was 35 years old

- There was still no progression process in place

- Our opening partnership looked further from solved than before the test

- Any more?

If he thinks that is swimmingly, then FMD!

I strangely feel sorry for him. The guy looks like he has just realised he is out of his depth in interviews, kind of like a truck has hit him.

He is just totally non inspirational and unimpressive. His interview was just on Fox news then and I switched off half way through it. Compare him to Andy Flower and you'll see where half the problem is.

Surely we can find someone better.

The bigfooty cricket board had the guy pegged when his contract was extended the first time after losing the home series to South Africa. That the CA board couldn't see it after another 2 years of mediocre performances is astonishing.

Having four top order batsmen woefully out of form is "swimmingly"???
One freak spell by Mitch Johnson decided that match.
Andy Flower got it right the day after the Perth Test, when he said the one result did not paper over the cracks in the Australian team.
Flower>Nielsen

No doubt, but I think the issues of selection are far worse than the who the coach is. Some consistency and clear thinking at the selection table should be the first thing done.

Steve Waugh would have made a better coach.

But we could always use warnie? The bogan community love little warnie.

The first requirement for a coach is that they actually want the job.

I also think if a former great like Waugh or Warne was to become coach, it would be a good idea for them to wait until there are no players remaining from their own teams.

dunno about this. i've thought for a while players seem to go retrograde once the coaching circus around nielsen gets their hands on them. for some it may be a good thing they haven't been mindf--ked by that rabble

no disputing this though

We will only get worse while he is in charge. Pay out his contract, I'll happily chip in.

Yep -reminds me of Matthew Knights in so many way. Clearly he is out of his depth.

Surely there would be other options out there?

Nah, it's just he's a Carlton supporter, and they are notorious for over-rating their own team.
I knew he must have had something going for him. ;)

His major drawback of course is that he is South Australian (in cricketing terms at least). :)

Only Katich and Ponting remain from Waugh's teams.

Who was the idiot that decided to give Tim Nielsen a 3-year extension on his CA contract-and the same applies to Andrew Hilditch? Hilditch and Nielsen have virtually destroyed Australian cricket. And Nielsen must've been spending too much time with Terry Wallace, because of his spin doctoring. No wonder England have retained the Ashes-and Fleet St are giving it to us in bundles. Sack Hilditch & Nielsn now!

Mathew Knights wasn't out of his league, he just waited too long to get rid of the old rubbish from the club. Should have done a cleanout the minute he got to the club.

I doubt Steve Waugh would take on the job, he seems to not want to have much to do with Cricket at all these days.

In posting this I'm not saying he's angling for the job or will be in the job, but I've noticed his public profile has been lifted of recent times.

Roebuck wrote a good article today contrasting Fletcher and Nielsen and the respective approaches.

Lets give Boof Lehmann or the bloke from the Bushrangers a chance to coach Australia...

We could do a lot worse.........I know Victoria have a good side but they have done very well in the Shield recently, the coach has something to do with it.

I am actually interested to see how Boof Lehmann goes coaching the QLD Bulls in the Big Bash - we are bloody hopeless at that form of the game so it will be intesting to see how he goes with them.

Either way, look at the sides doing well and who they are coached by: England (Andy Flower, top batsmen for his country) and India (Gary Kirsten, one of Sth Africa's greatest openers).

I'd ertainly like to think we can find an Aussie coach that is for sure. It is a tough job though with not much time at home so whoever takes the job will want to have no young kids and be dedicated to Cricket and Australia.

What about getting Mickey Arthur before the Warriors send him to the laughing academy?

I don't know that he'd be any good but I always feel sorry for the Warriors coaches.
