I had a match yesterday that said the following:
"Hey XXXX! I'm part of a new startup team called Local Lens, and we're matching tourists to local Melbourians who love making new friends. We are looking for people to show them around to get a feel of what melbourne culture is like and also based on mutual interests, ie/ bar hopping, brunch, photo-taking etc! On top of that, you'll get paid as a small token of appreciation."

Sounds totally legit...

That does sound legit - and a pretty ****ing good idea.

Couch surfer is kind of the same, just hasn't been commercialized yet.

so.....

I still think tinder and the like is setting a terrible precedent for how we view relationships (sexual and otherwise) and I have grave fears for kids who grow up not knowing anything but this kind of hooking up.....

having said that... for whatever reason, the other week I ended up putting an okcupid profile up -

after a couple of days got a couple of messages (and a heap of 'likes' that I have to pay $10 a month to find out who they are.. f*k that) and ended up having friday afternoon drinks organised..

So very first 'internet date' in my entire life - Rock up around the agreed time. Got myself a pint and took a seat...

40 odd minutes later I left having sat there like a chump for the entire time by myself...

just send them your credit card details to be sure

A nice ice breaker ive used a few times, and once resulted in an invitation straight after, is to say something along the lines of..

“I know its customary for guy when chatting to a girls on tinder (or whatever app) to send random pics of their c*ck in some thinly veiled attempt to prove their masculinity. Well not wanting to make you feel left out thought id better provide one for you so we can get it out of the way.. “

Then I send a pic of a rooster and it has a caption on the pic “my big c*ck”...

You can play with the wording somewhat depending how the initial conversation is going, usually gets a positive response.

I've had success with the old "I'll send you something dirty so you know it's me ;)" after getting her number. You then proceed to send a picture of a patch of dirt or maybe some dishes.

It's so she knows what work needs to be done in the kitchen when she comes over, right? ;)

If you're 22km away and new to Melbourne from overseas then get ****ed...

Unless the best looking hostel in the world is located somewhere near Dandenong or Frankston?

Do people really get anywhere when using these sorts of things? Because I certainly can't seem to
Edit: I know people that do. But they're all female.

Have you tried being more attractive?

I make up for it with personality :p

But seriously I have no idea if I'm attractive or not. And I don't think it matters, considering I tend to like girls most people find 'unattractive'.

There's a few things you can do to make yourself more attractive. Have an interesting picture that isn't you drinking with friends or posing in front of a landmark, have an interesting profile, show some personality. Any one of these three are likely to be a killer for a girl as you don't stand out at all.

Might be banter issues?
Hmmm you may be on to something. I am a lot more willing to banter face to face rather than on my phone, where you can't judge non verbal cues accurately. Maybe this whole thing is not really for me? I seem to have a lot more luck meeting girls the traditional way anyway.

If the traditional way works well for you then keep at it.

No harm in keeping on having a crack at tinder though, practice makes perfect.

I employed a girl-friend to critique my dating profiles.
She really opened my eyes to the mistakes i was making
