Ignoring the complex draft deals here's a simple trade. It might be seen as unders a bit but the Crows aren't looking for a like for like player for Tippett.

GWS - Gain: Pick 22 Lose: Giles
Sydney - Gain: Tippett Lose: Pick 22
Adelaide - Gain: Giles Lose: Tippett

GWS can use one of their 6 first round draft picks to pick up a new ruck or more likely trade for an experienced ruck. Personally I'd like to pick up B Grundy as a ruck/key forward in the draft but he'll probably be long gone by the time pick 19 comes around - most likely GWS which would leave GWS with both Giles and Grundy which is a lose/lose for Adelaide.

Are there any key/midsize defenders in the SANFL worth pursuing outside the radar of interstate clubs?

Mate thats not a bit unders, that is fully shafted to point of anal bleeding. Seriously, the PSD option shites on Giles for Tippet.

I get the gut feel it will end up being 22 + Grundy at maximum unfortunately

Alternatively have the Crows staff given an expiry in dealing with this? trade week goes for 3 weeks...if after 2 weeks they have barely moved forward will Adelaide just tip the monopoly board upside down and say "I'm not playing with you anymore" (to Sydney that is).

Then just open it back up to the likes of Brisbane, Gold Coast, GWS?

Def unders but I get your sentiment ie get it done.

I do think Giles is underated here. He had a very good year in a poor side posting some excellent numbers.

I certainly hope we get him as he is clearly more than just a ruckman.

We have a list manager in David Noble who did a terrific job in last years trade period for us and I have full confidence in his ability to work a good deal in Tippetts case. I only hope he has a plan B that includes dealing with Brisbane, who would offer much more for us.They clearly wanted him last year and this is going to be their last chance to grab him. He no doubt fills a need for them and as such I think they might be tempted in offering us slightly overs. How would Polec and pick 8 in and Tippett and 19 out look? Polec fills a need of ours and 8 would give us a good look at an elite junior. This would be a win/win for both teams which is how trades should work.

That only works if Tippett agrees.

That's a worst case scenario. It's better than getting nothing which Sydney can push. I'm sure we'll do better though because Sydney won't want the hassle of dragging this out to the PSD.

If you have bleeding see a doctor.

I have a feeling we will deal with GWS to upgrade a pick we get for Tippett along with Luke Thompson to get pick 3 and Toumpas.

GWS have been stockpiling high draft picks both years... They could be grabbing much better uncontracted players than Luke Thompson for free. It looks like the have not bothered grabbing one this year

Pick 3 will be used by GWS...

Otherwise we do a deal with Carlton who desperately need key forwards.

Do a lop-sided trade in our favour but commit to torpedo any Tippett trade and let him go in the PSD where they'll pick him up. They could trade/delist Warnock to make room in their cap.

Silvagni was on the radio yesterday I think saying they tried with every single club to get players in that 22-24 bracket with the mini draft picks...nobody budged, and clubs such as ours (for list management purposes), Crows, and now the Dees have offered up their high draft picks instead.

Dont know it shites...maybe a bit strong.

Some of Giles stats in a poor team

23 dispodals 6 marks 26 hit outs 2 goals
21 disposals 6 marks 13 hit outs 3 goals
14 disposals 4 marks 23 hit outs 3 goals
21 disposals 10 marks 25 hit outs
19 disposals 10 marks 29 hit outs.1 goal.

That's just a sample. Reckon he might surprise.

His around the ground work is better than Jacobs. He is a better mark and more lethal up forward than Jacobs. However Jacobs craps all over him in terms of ruck work. Who knows though.......... with a better midfield Giles may excel in that area as well.

The afl outlawed those type of lop-sided trades. That happened when the bulldogs and hawks did a deal to send jade Rawlings to the PSD

If we get Giles though. Who by the way i think does have some real talent.

What do we do with Jenkins McKernan and Johnston though? SANFL again.

Its the same as if we get Grundy. It just means that Otten and Shaw will be playing SANFL.

I would rather get games into these young blokes. And then trade for some others that are more of a need. Ie: Outside runners, Small Forwards.

But why have they not grabbed any uncontracted players for free this year if they are chasing senior players? They are a free hit

Might be unders???

If he doesn't he ends up at GWS or GC anyway through PSD...surely he wont be a full a$$hole and at least let his ex club get SOME compensation.
Don't put money on it. His agent has already hinted at it.

I wouldn't mind seeing Giles and Jacobs together, Giles up forward more as I think he could handle it. Would rather a trade was done separately to anything with Tippett.

From a Sturt (& Sydney!) supporters perspective it is a good deal, but pretty ordinary from a Crows viewpoint.

Sydney won't be able to land Tippett with their picks alone. They will need to either trade a quality player to the Crows or another club if they are serious.

There seems to be very little coming out of them shopping any of their 22 around. Usually by now we would be hearing the whispers.

Got a feeling this will take three weeks and 1 day to get done.

That's the pessimist in me.

The joys of having some depth. Both McKernan and Johnston need some regular games so we can see if they can progress to the starting 22. If not, like all backups they get moved on looking for opportunities. Adding Giles would certainly add more pressure to spots. Either Giles becomes a resting forward ruckman, kicking goals or a pure ruck in which case he'll languish in the SANFL as backup to Jacobs. Alternatively he plays off the bench and the midfielders rotate one position in the forward pocket. But teams don't play two pure rucks these days.

The longer the AFL allow the trade period, the longer these complicated deals will take. Funny how they always tend to be finalised at the 11th hour...

The trouble with finalizing it at the 11 th hour is it leaves us little time to use the picks we gain to do other deals unless we tie the whole thing together. Then we are vulnerable to the deal collapsing

I would just like it finished sooner rather than later
