Here is a question that has been bugging me.

If there had been no agreement to send KT "home", and assuming that KT stayed fixed in his position that he would only go to Sydney. What would have been the minimum we would have accepted from Sydney before we sent him to the PSD.

My thinking is that 23 would not have gone close, but I would guess that we probably would have taken a pick around 12 to 15.

I guess we will never know.

this is the aspect that gets lost in the argument. its easy to prove that Sydney is a more expensive place to live. its very hard for Sydney to prove they pay each of their players about 10% more than they'd get at any other club. at the very least, its wide open to rorting on a scale that would make Adelaide's recent transgressions look like chicken feed.

For the extra 10% in cap space to be relevant, EVERYTHING in Sydney would have to be 10% dearer than elsewhere. This is not correct, basically everything with the exception of Rent or property purchase is the the same as in the rest of the country (milk, bread, veg, car prices etc are comparable). As you already earn 4-5 times the average wage and you can sell a house when you leave and get the capital gain I fail to see how this extra cap space is relevant.

not arguing that. show me a way to prove that Sydney pays each individual player 10% more than they'd earn elsewhere. I don't see how anyone can. give a club a sackful of free cash and they'll use it to their best advantage.

good point. is there a precedent in any other major sporting league anywhere in the world? I can't think of one off the top of my head and I imagine variations in cost of living would be much greater in the US with cities like New York and Oklahoma City for example.

i understand your point of view its not just the swans getting this money GWS get and no one is up in arms about 2 players from the gaints on 1 million dollars a season and if they get kurt it will make 3 and everyone will be happy if he goes there and say nothing about their cap

I think if you go back to when these guys were signed there was a bit of a fuss. However they are a newly established team you are not. They need a leg up, you do not.

i underrstand that they need a leg up but 3 players on a million dollars the gold coast dont have that and they are a new team only into there 3 season

big izzy folou is a million a season and scully is also

Folau isn't under their cap though. Well, most of it isn't. Giants probably pay $200k for Izzy. The AFL pays the rest from their own pocket.

They are heavily front loaded contracts. They wont be on that in a couple of years time. GC also recruited more experienced players than GWS hence had to share the load more. Tippett will not be on 1 mill a season if he moves to the GWS.

Was about to say the same thing. Besides, if Tippett goes to GWS it would be a little lower than a million anyway wouldn't it? I thought everyone was saying that Sydney were backending it, and thus couldn't actually afford it straight up, and Tippett would have to put a lower, say $800,000, price tag on his head?

Izzy Folou is a highly relevant name in terms of this discussion. Surely if GWS draft Tiprat, Folou is finished as an AFL footballer.

I am pretty sure I've heard somwhere that Folau and Hunt's wages do not fall under the salary cap, they have some sort of marquee status due to them being a alternate code athlete or something along those lines.

Correct. also on the COL for sydney, theyve won 2 premierships in 7 years, and played finals in 19 of the last 20 years or something, GWS on the other hand do need a leg up if they are to develop a supporter base that will make them a net gain to the afl rather than a net loss

Sounds about right from my understanding. Other point is that GC extra in the cap will decrease over time IIRC, Sydneys extra allowance just goes on forever.
Lets hope City Hall put an end to the Swans allowance it next year!!!!

If KT nominates a 4 year contract that he thinks Sydney can afford ie: 800k 800k 1.2m 1.2m. Total 4m the GWS would need to match it in time and total amount. 4 x 1.0m

It's not a matter of agreeing to to disagree cheifton, the majority of Hunt and Folou's salaries are outside the cap as 'marketing' or more accurately 'expanding the game'. Not only outside the cap but funded from AD's coin purse.

Can't back or front load contacts in the PSD, flat time for cap purposes. If he ageed to a 800, 800, 1.2, 1.2 deal with sydney, they will still incur a 1.2 whack on the TPP ledger.

Yeah, fairly sure it's AFL promotion/advertising, not TPP.

Brisbane's allowance has rightly ended, about time $ydney's did too... they're very definitely established now. However, if the current investigation reveals a higher cost of living in Sydney, surely the allowance could be continued but limited to rookies and players on less than $150k and administered by the AFL to eliminate any speculation.
