Limited Potential

Similar to previous years Collier looked the goods until it was time to start playing footy. He impresses on the training track but when the season started his form was woeful. It was so bad, his career was looking as good as over, but a couple of months into the year, he spent some time up forward, and showed a glimpse of being able to play decent footy.

With a long injury list he got his opportunity in round 10 and played the next 7 games in the seniors. In that time he showed that there is still a long way for him to go to make it at this level. He is a good runner but not good in contested situations. His lack of body strength means he lacks any sort of physical presence and causes him to go to ground too easily. While there was commendable improvement in his disposal efficiency, it is still not damaging, and there is still a sense of dread whenever he gets the ball.

The problem for Collier is that he lacks a genuine weapon. As a junior he was able to break the lines and burst through tackles, but at this level he can't find space and he gets rag dolled. He has been unable to adapt his game accordingly. A recall for the round 22 game against Sydney will give him hope of retaining his spot on the list next year, but there is a good chance he has played his last game in Lions’ colours.

The Lions coach also praised Tom Collier and Sam Sheldon for their pre-season work ethic and said he was looking forward to them playing a greater role in the senior side.

Re: Tom Collier

A March champion if there ever was one! Wasn't he getting pumped up last pre-season as well?

Bigger biceps are hardly going to help him with his lazy chases and poor decisions.

Yeah, we hear the 'training the house down' comments every year. I won't be getting excited until we see it translate into playing good footy.

Re: Tom Collier

i thought collier was a certainty to be delisted after last year, 'fairly ordinary' first part is grossly overstating his performance.
to his credit he did play better footy towards the end of the year, obviously enough to spare him the chop.
let's hope he can sort out his deficiencies and make a statement this year, that we have all been wrong in our observations of him, that would be awesome.

Re: Tom Collier

His game style has always been reliant on body strength and he has struggled coming up against grown men whilst still a bit underdeveloped himself. He needed to put on some muscle in the offseason and its good to see that he has.

His skills were not good enough last year but he was hardly robinson crusoe on that one. The renewed focus on improving the skills of the group should also help him a lot hopefully coming into next year.

As a tall, physical player I am happy for him to get the extra year to show what he can do.

Re: Tom Collier

I agree with the one more year.He is in a bunch of 5 or 6 with Sheldon,Hawksley etc. who we just have to give one more go to see if we can eek out 2 or 3 solid contributors.

Lions Community Camp: Day 2

Following the school visits in the morning, the Lions headed back to Queens Park in Toowoomba to test out their coaching and umpiring skills in local junior footy.

Lions defender Tom Collier said he had a newfound appreciation for umpires.

“It’s tough to have all that responsibility and the fitness level required is amazing. I turned around after one call and the play was already down the other end so off I went again,” Collier said.

Re: Tom Collier

He does try, and you can't fault him on his effort or for what he attempts, he just makes the wrong decision or can't execute the skill well enough often enough.

Key-position player Tom Collier and ruckman Broc McCauley, who was elevated from the Lions' rookie list this week, were named on the extended interchange bench for this Sunday's clash against the Western Bulldogs.

Even if they don't make the final side named on Friday afternoon, Voss said both were still strong chances to play in the coming weeks.

Re: Tom Collier

Nathan Clarke

“Collier and Mitch Golby were probably our two best players."

“Tom Collier performed the ruck role late in the third and in the last. Tom actually gave us some drive in the last quarter because we effectively had four midfielders starting in the square.”

Re: Tom Collier

Nathan Clarke

The Reserves are almost certain to be without one of their regular performers this week considering a position has been made available in the senior team following Ryan Lester’s foot injury.

Clarke said there were a number of young Lions players who could legitimately make the most of such an opportunity.

“Tom Collier has been performing well in the Reserves and really looks to be above that level. He also adds that versatility given he’s 192cm and can play pretty much everywhere.”

Round 5 vs St Kilda

Collier has been selected to play his first senior game for 2011 after impressing with the Lions Reserves over the past few weeks.

The 22 year-old has played a total of 20 matches for the Lions since arriving at the Club via the 2007 NAB AFL National Draft and is embarking on his fourth AFL season.

At 192cm, Collier presents the team with a versatile option who can play at either end of the field, but has named to start at centre half-forward.

Arian Fletcher

"Tommy gets another opportunity. He's a Tassie boy (in his) 4th year of the preseason phase, and he gets his first game for the season. He'll probably play down back or up on the wing. We're really happy with the way he's been going at QAFL level, but now it's time to step up and play senior footy."

Michael Voss in his after match press conference

Good to see Tommy Collier come in and play a fairly handy game for us. That's what we've wanted to see from him over the last three or four years, so the fact that he can emerge in that role is going to be pretty important for our future development as a team.

Re: Tom Collier

Best game I've seen off him since his 2008 debut against the Crows. He has had handy games since then but once he gets that confidence, which he had in juniors, he will be a handy line breaker for us.
