As a potential Father Son selection from the Oakleigh Chargers, can someone tell me how he has gone over the Final Series?

And then what is his worth and skill set.

I believe the Hawks did not use the F/S on Curran.

If this is true it might indicate that his stocks aren't as high as some have predicted.

This is correct. I think the feeling was the bid process was going to commit Hawthorn to using their first round pick. Not sure they value him at that level.

There did seem to be strong mail the club was committed to him though. Shame. Good judges on our board thought the price was worth paying.

He's a 1st Rounder IMHO. Perhaps the Hawks have other fish to fry with their 1st round pick plus a player.

Could come and Bite the Hawks on the Bum then

That Gunston kid has thrown a spanner in the works hasnt he.

Would be nice to be able to get Curran on the list but if we get another KPP with our first pick then you would think our next priority would be a mid.

I am a bit surprised he has been passed over. I would have thought he is worth a 2nd round selection or pick # 45, particularly given his development potential at either end of the ground. Anyway they know best so will be interesting what they do.

Dont understand this attitude.

Surely they take it to the bid process , and see what happens. If they rate him as R2 pick , there is still a very good chance of him getting thru to them for that pick ie Geelong say's we will use our R1 , it still gets thru to Hawks R2 pick.

And if Richmond ( for eg.) says R1 the they still have the chance to match or not match.Yet not many mocks I have seen have him in the top 20 players!

Is it more a List balance thing with already having a few young KPPlayers they really need a Plug and Play guy. Or perhaps they do not want to commit themselves to a certain pick before trade week. Perhaps . if and when he is available in the draft they may take him if they have pick, whether it was originally there pick or not.

For mine he would be a good option for the Cats , hope they look at him.

I do think they'd like to have their first rounder in play during trade week.

How many potential f/s picks are committed to conditionally? I tend to think when you go down that track with the child of a former player you're locked in.

Question? If the Hawks did take him to FA bidding willing to use R2 for him and "Richmond" nominated R1 and then Hawks so NO to matching that bid..

Does that me Curran is now tied to Richmond?

If so , then , by not taking him thru the bidding process they still may have a chance to get him with an alternate pick. Whereas if they don't match.. he is gone.

Sort of unusually situation , Hawks must feel they need the pick available for trade more than the advantage they get in using a pick in FS

If "Richmond" bid a first round pick and Hawthorn refused to match that bid, then "Richmond" are committed.

I've seen a bit of Tom play and whilst he will go in the draft I think that he'll go 2nd round. I don't think he did enough for Vic Metro or the Chargers when he was out there to demand a first round pick which the Hawks would have needed to secure him.

I think the Hawks could get something better that Tom with their first pick and possibly still end up with him if a they can manage to swap 2nd round picks with the Crows if a deal does eventuate for Gunston.

The interesting thing about Tom is that people seem to suggest he is a 2nd rounder and yet they also think the Hawks would have to use a 1st rounder to get him. That would mean that another club would have to offer a 1st rounder to make the Hawks use their 1st round.

Doesn't that therefore make him a potential 1st rounder. :D

Good article on Tom from Emma Quayle:

''Graham basically explained that they want to be active in trade week and that, if they nominated me, it might be too hard to do that. And he said if they did nominate me, they'd have to see me in their top 45 prospects, which they didn't. They had to make the decision and, when I thought about it, I could see how it might end up being better for me this way.

''The way I see it, 17 doors open up now and only one door closes. If I get picked up now, people externally will see it as me being good enough to be drafted, not just look at it from the father-son angle. I think that could be good.''

Swans are apparently interested along with Carlton

Wright also told Curran that in any event, the Hawks didn't rate him in their top 45 players going into next month's draft. Ouch.

Curran is on crutches at the Combine, so can't take part in all the testing. But with the Hawks out of the way, the interviews started on Tuesday, first Sydney and Carlton, with more to come.

Would assume since our first rounder is out of the equation we see it likely he will be around for our 2nd?

From the article the Hawks seem to think that he's late second round early 3rd as they didn't rank him in their top 45. That being said, the Swans, or other clubs might rate him higher and may very well take him in the 2nd round.

The important factor to consider though is even though Hawthorn have told Tom he is not in their top 45, Hawthorn don't have a second round pick until pick 46. Still a chance, not participating in the testing due to 'foot' injury could also see him slide.

If Hawthorn can walk away from the Trade/Draft period with Gunston, Curran and Bruest I will be very happy. Leaves the door open to concentrate on midfielders in the 2012 'Super draft.' Considering the depth of the Hawthorn midfield, I wouldn't rule this out.

What about if Sydney swoop in at 43? or the Blues at 44?

To be honest, if he's not picked up in the first round by some opportunistic club in the 20's-ish range I think Tom is headed to the SCG. I may be biased though

Hawks always knew they were going to have to use a few picks to land Gunston and were willing to pay the price by overlooking Tom.

Hawks loss and another AFL teams gain IMHO. Would not surprise if GWS jumped on him, having so many picks to play with.

Pretty much. First pick is currently 53.

Gunston was the main event this trade period and the club did not want to have to match a first or second round bid to nab him. The assessment for Curran was late 40's - early 50's.

Hawthorn are back in position to get Curran getting pick 33 for Renouf. Considering Sydney don't have a second rounder until well after and the unlikely proposition of Carlton using their first rounder we are in the box seat to get him.
