I would imagine Collingwood would do the right thing by him, just like we did with Marc Woolnough.

Heartbreaking for the kid. I liked what I saw early on.

Collingwood youngster Tom Davidson has endured the most heart-breaking AFL debut imaginable after suffering his second serious knee injury in 12 months in his first appearance for the Magpies on Saturday.

And this latest setback for the 21-year-old came at a time when he was just starting to show his true potential, not only to the Pies’ coaching staff but also to the Magpies’ army of adoring fans.

Davidson, a strong-marking forward who has already being compared to Chris Tarrant for his similarity in build and playing style, would have made his AFL debut for the Pies last year had he not ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the pre-season.

But after missing the whole of 2003 as he completed his recovery, the Pies wasted little time in getting the talented son of former Geelong player and current Cats’ football manager Garry into the senior side in 2004.

And after taking three marks early on against the Bulldogs at the MCG on Saturday, Davidson looked set to play a major role in his first game before tragically he seriously injured his other knee just before half-time.

The Pies’ confirmed the worst after the game with Davidson now set to miss another 12 months as coach Michael Malthouse immediately vowed the club would stick by the young forward during another long period of rehabilitation.

“If you didn’t work out he could play football in that brief time…..and you wonder why we have showed patience with him,” Malthouse said after the game, which ended with a thrilling nine point win over the Bulldogs.

“And we will show more patience with him over the next 12 months.”

“It’s a bittersweet victory because you love to see a young player come through and play to his potential but now he has been cut down two years in a row.”

“But we will give him 12 months or whatever it takes and bring him back again because we know he can play.”
