What's everyones thoughts of picking up Tom Hislop in the draft? Supposedly went high in the 2006 draft and has been given the boot by Essendon. Has now ceased training with them also. Would he still be around our 4th round pick? Thompson and Hislop would be good aquisitions for us (based on potential) Apparently Hislop is as tough as nails. :)

The bloke has just turned 20... Sheesh I remember when I was 20 (10 or so years ago) and could probably be described by most adults as having 'behavioral' issues, didn't most of us at that age! Took me until my mid 20s before I settled down a bit decided what I want in life.. Footballers are expected to grow up very quickly while under a lot of pressure.

Anyway, Hislop is definitely a player, and if he's just a bit wild because he's still pretty immature for his age, then I reckon he's definitely worth a late pick, and maybe with the new enviroment, and the kick in arse being delisted gives, he might have grown up a bit a realised the opportunity hes wasting. Connors had a few issues when we took a punt on him and we seem to be managing him pretty well.

Pure speculation though! Maybe he's just fundamentally a tool, and not someone you'd want around the club.

Anyone got more of an insight of what the issues were?

Absolutely its speculation, but the Dons gave him the kick in arse being delisted, then invited him back to train and now said he is no longer invited back to train and they will not be considering drafting him back. That's a pretty big statement by the Dons I'd say of what they think of him even after a wake up call.

Sorry wasn't aware he'd been invited back to train after being delisted, and was then given the flick again... Yeah fairly big statement!

Still like to know exactly what his issue is, could be something to do with a personality clash at the bombers, or not wanting to go back into the same enviroment that got him delisted, etc. Its just that serious talent is very valuable, and maybe his mental issues can be dealt with...

You think he's worth a rookie spot if gets through?

Now l have no idea what the issues are behind him, but with the weight that major sponsors have on the "culture" and personnel at a club these days is huge, l would imagine it would a massive risk to invest in a nutcase and put him on your rookie list.

Think about it... Hislop gets caught drink-driving, or doing drugs, or stealing an old ladies purse. And we knew about his background! We could lose massive investments in the club in a time when the enconomic climate are its most stretched on a well-known rookie-listed headcase!

Why do you think so many clubs have backed out of the race for Cousins? Sponsors.

Not worth it. Particularly on someone that has not proven a God-damn thing.

Had a look on the essendon board and found this thread about Hislop. The whole thread is good, but gets interesting from post #73 onwards.

So yeah sounds as though the kid's got talent, but maybe leaning towards him being basically a tool, rather than just immature! No thanks....

Like the way the name of the venue in question is revealed :D

Remember watching him and thinking Essendon were really onto something with him, hard at it, poise, looked like a player on his way to a first class career. He must have REAALLY serious issues for them to push him out the door like that. I'd be very tempted to throw him a 4th round lifeline.

Have a look at the link above... But it would would be fair to say he'd slot in pretty well at the Pies, or maybe out on the town with with Carey and Fev :D

Agree with Wally on this, far too big a risk for a team that hasn't even got a major sponsor at this stage.

If anything I reckon we should take him in the rookie draft. If his behaviour improves than put him on the list.

He sounds like a Ty Zantuck clone.

Steer clear, he has issues and doesn't want to change his behviour (hence refusing to sign a behavioural based contract and getting delisted).

We took Collard last year and look what a waste that was.

i think people need to read inbetween the lines a little differently with why Hislop was "cut" from training with the Dons.

"I'm expecting Tom to be picked up in the national draft by someone," football operations manager Paul Hamilton told SEN on Friday.

"I don't think it will be us. I think it will be another club.

"He's no longer training with us as of this week, so we're happy for him to move forward.

sounds like to me that perhaps the club found out that he was talking to another club, and has been told he will get selected with a certain pick, that the bombers wouldn't feel comfortable beating.

The suggestions that his "off field" issues (whatever they may really be..) is pure gossip and speculation.

i think it reads that he has been caught out talking to another club, or they have found out another club will select him prior to the bombers - and the dons cracked the shits - and (as any club would) kicked a future opposition player out of training with them.

question is - who will select him - if not the dons?

I met Tommys dad at a shark exibition at Luna Park one day and as far as I'm concerned Vic Hislop is an absolute phsyco there for we should pass on his son.
Whhisky ,

Hislop is the poor mans Tasmanian version of David Armitage who kicked his arse in the 2006 Under 18 championships. If the Tigers had not swapped their pick 8 in that draft you could have had ARMO and wouldnt that have made Craig McCrae happy.

No its not. It's been declared publicly by the Essendon footy club and has been suspended for multiple "off-field issues" before.

Its not gossip or speculation in this case.

But we got Jack so that's perfectly fine with me. :) :thumbsu:

Richmond said they were taking Jack Riewoldt before the draft took place.

Armitage was our next favourite choice though, so he was highly rated by us :thumbsu:
