Player Watch Tom Mitchell (Delisted 2025)

As Fly said earlier this year, the game looks different in June, July, and August. It's much different from March and April when it’s in high transition and the game is played fast.

I don’t know if he come in this week, but he’ll be back soon enough because we’re coming into the months where a player like Titch thrives. Personally, I can’t wait to have him back in the side. He looks hungry!

I think people forget how poor Mitchell was before his injury, game looked like it had gone past him. Even in 2023 up until finals he was slow and clumsy. The same people wanting him back into the team are probably the same people who wanted him dropped at the start of last year.

Only way he gets into the team is if Long get injured.

His injury was plantar fasciitis - he wasn't poor before his injury - he was poor when playing with his injury.

In 2023 he was excellent. Like all the oldies, he went off the boil in the back half of the year when we were loading the **** out of them to get them really fit for finals.

He'll get chances. No idea if he'll be there or not in September. There's going to be a selection squeeze if we're mainly fit.

If Mitchell doesn't retire this year and I assume he won't want to, that he will be traded or delisted.
I think we all know that some of our favourite players won't have their contracts renewed.
Some decisions are going to be very unpopular with fans.
If this is the case, then I think it's more important than ever to get games into our younger players.
Just because we're all in for the flag this year doesn't mean we shouldn't be thinking about next year.
Just my two bob's worth.

Yeah possibly. If we get Rowell id say it'll be a certainty. I hope Titch gets another year. Taking a forearm to the neck from Oscar with 40 seconds to go made the flag a certainty. Well see with how he finished the year i guess

I see no need to rush Mitchell this week. Let him have another game in the VFL and ease him in after the bye.
They brought De Goey in for a game right before a bye. My guess is they thought it was a good way to get the ‘first game soreness’ out of the way.

I know Titch has been playing VFL games but presumably he would end up working a fair bit harder and putting more km’s into the legs in an AFL match and might appreciate a bye to fully recover from that?

I don't mind either way. It's a good problem to have

Sullivan's not a best 23 player. I have no issue with Mitchell coming in for him at some point.

That said, I wasn't too pleased with much of Tom's 2023 and think his game style, except directly at the coal face (though even there he did not always perform), is now even less suited to our game. He's slow, not a great runner, and kicks short and not that well.

In our best 23 he may be the over 30 player who is the odd man out. Maybe we find a role that works, but I do hope we don’t force it just because of his reputation. Need to make a clear headed call.

Tom finished fifth in the Copeland in 2023.
Do you wonder why your analysis is so far off what the club think?

Spot on. The ground gets softer in winter and games get slower and more contested. Perfect for Titch.

He’ll come in at the expense of some youth getting games. Not Ned. He’s now a lock in our midfield. Somehow, we need to play them both. Ned is far too essential now.

We will also have a fit DeGoey in a few weeks. He’s already eluded to the fact he’ll play forward more.

If Tom Mitchell is your depth you’re in a ****ing good position.
We have cards up our sleeve, it's good at the moment.

We managed to fit Adams and Mitchell in the same side in 2023 and it was very productive.

I would say a fit Titch is an auto in but Fly knows bestl

Mitchell is still one of our most important players and the fact that Long - playing Mitchell's role, has us back in the position we were in in 2023 should show you how important Mitchell and his role are

Now, you might say "Well we can't fit both Long and Mitchell in the same team"

I'd argue we can.

Long seems a bit more versatile that Mitchell in that he can play other roles if need be. No reason we can't rotate them both.

As far as I'm concerned, a midfield 3 of Daicos, Long and Mitchell should basically never lose a centre clearance.

What a position we are going to be in hopefully having Tommy then jordy available
Batting deeper and deeper inside

Jordy forward is another massive weapon to unleash at times. Who do we leave out though? Its like being at the casino and stuffing cash in your pockets because your wallets full

He's way too valuable to be...but imagine Jordy being the sub for us once the game opens up.

Titch and Long do the hard work in the middle, only for Jordy to come in like a bull in a china shop.

Pretty solid flex though to demoralise the opposition. We should start Nick a the sub against Carlton to show them what we think of them as a team
