To celebrate Tom's new album this thread is all about Tom and the band and their 30 years of rock and roll. What do you think are their best work and what do you think about Tom's recent stuff and the growing respect and recognition he is getting today? What do you like about his music and what do you think about the Heartbreakers?

I will start in saying that I am glad that his new album was a chart topper.

For an album with the Heartbreakers I reckon you can't go past "Damn the Torpedoes" it created one of the most anticipated releases back in 79 as it was leaked to radio before release. With songs like "Refugee" "Dont Do Me Like That" "Here Comes My Girl" and "Even the Loosers" it is a great rocking album, the follow up to that, MCA threatened to raise the album price to 8.98 and Petty refused, threatening in turn to name "Hard Promises" $8.98. He got his way, Petty suffers no fools at an early age.

On his own, with some contributions from the band and Rick Rubin at the helm, Wildflowers is a fine album which shows the maturation and reality of Tom, his songwriting is great songs including "You Wreck Me" "Crawling Back To You" and "You Dont Know How It Feels"

Greatest Hits is also a great single disc for most of what casual fans would enjoy the most, the songs that were on the radio during the late 70's through to the early 90's when he was a radio mainstay.

Why radio let this great singer/songwriter go does his recent stuff no justice at all but as a live band the Heartbreakers are one of the most tightest and professional bands I have heard.

Tom is featured in the latest Rolling Stone magazine. Nice that Australian media is finally paying attention to him. The cover, ironically has Johnny Depp on it, one of whoms 1st claims to fame was staring in a Tom Petty video as Eddie Rebel.

What albums do you have of TPATHB?

The latest one I brought apart from Highway Companion was their music soundtrack for the 1996 film, She's The One, its a great set of more experimental tripped out rock songs, almost alternative stuff including a great take on Beck Campbell's "arseh*le".
