To me he is the complete package.

He has pace, he is a decent size, and he is as tough as they get.

He will 100% guaranteed develop into an AFL senior footballer over the next few seasons, and could even get a game or two next year when he goes onto the rookie list.

You have to remember, technically he hasn't even been placed on our rookie list yet, yet he was a very good VFL player this year.

Josh Thomas, Lachlan Keefe, Luke Rounds and Tom Young are the 4 youngsters you should watch closely next year, they are all "rippers".

I watched a few games, and for me he and Josh Thomas stood out. Not in terms of performance, as I'm sure others performed better like Rounds, but in terms of showing AFL level talent, they look above the rest. I understand this would normally be his draft year which makes it more impressive. I wonder where he'd likely go in the draft?

How's his skill levels, i.e kicking, one touch, marking etc?

The drafting rules allow us to preselect NSW scholarship holders in the National Draft if the club and player agree to it. Given our massive list turnover i'd be surprised if we didn't see him come straight onto the senior list next year.

I am hoping they do put him straight on the list, as it ensures we also have "rights" on him for 2 seasons, keeping him away from GWS.

Thomas and Young are the 2 youngsters that I see as the most certain of future senior players out of the young players we will have on our list next year, but some others may improve quicker then expected (Sinclair, Keefe, McNamara etc).

To me Young's best strength is he's a ball magnet. Not one of those kids that goes missing when they go up a level. Seems a nice solid build, won't have any problems filling into the required size.. Weaknesses I've noticed is a tendency to be caught holding the ball. Not sure whether it's a lack of awareness of lack of speed, but happened quite a lot this year. Doesn't blow me away with his speed or skill just yet, but it's hard to make a call because he hasn't really developed yet.

For a 17 / 18 Y.O who has played almost all their footy up to this point in N.S.W to step into the VFL and perform a role is a real way over expectation. For him to be up in the best as often as he was in the last half of the season is mind blowing.

Often W.A and S.A kids are shot up the drafting list by performing well at senior level in the WAFL n SANFL and I don't think Young should be seen any different, in fact I think as I mentioned before the fact that he was stepping from junior NSW footy to best victorian state league is a huge step to take.

Has a really nice size for a kid his age, although I hope he doesn't grow anymore. At the moment he is clean enough at ground level and attacks the ball hard enough to be a big midfield type, if he was to grow much more it'd be hard to imagine him being good enough at ground level, especially going up to AFL level to fill this role.

Great size, great attack on the ball, pretty clean hands, good vision and handball, pretty good awareness and is able to "free the arms" before getting tackled regularly, not a bad pace. The kind of guy who could really come along in leaps and bounds, massive scope and upside.

Downsides are as mentioned he is a pretty big kid and a good athlete so whether that gets him through a bit at VFL level is hard to tell. If he grows a bit more may struggle to play midfield and be another of our many flankers. Has IIRC played a fair bit of CHF at juniour level though so he may even transition into Maccaffer's role as (if) Maccaffer moves into the midfield.

With the compromised drafts coming up being able to get a prospect like Tom for free is gold. I have wrapped him up a bit and he is almost certainly not as good as I have made him sound but that scope for being a good AFL player is huge.

Tom is a Wollondilly Redback Junior and has been since he was 5 years old. We breed a lot of talented footballers but we have a mountain range between Sydney and us called Razorback and it seems to block any one looking at our boys or sending AFL players down to see our juniors etc.....all too far away apparently....only an hour from the Airport mind you. I believe Tom's dad played a high level of footy as a teenager in Victoria. Believe Tom also represented his school in Union as well.

From the way you guys are describing him, it sounds like he is another Macaffer type. Would that be a fair comparison?

as I read threads like this it's becoming more apparent that Derek Hine and his men are geniuses. Hope he gets life membership...we owe him big time
