u dont want sam sheldon on your list blues fans he is not that good at all. He played in the 2's at Haileybury College all last year and will play in the 2's as a year 12 this year. He is an ok player but no where near afl standards

Having seen the tapes of the U16 Championships 6 weeks ago (featuring Sheldon) I am going to have to strongly disagree with you. He has talent and skill and class. Good overhead and reads the play and can kick very well with either foot.
I would have him inside the top 30 at this stage. Since he is also bottom aged I would think he will develop more than a number of others and move up further if he does.

Just my view for whats its worth.

Cheers. :thumbsu:

Sheldon is fairly tall too at mid 180s?

Our midfield certainly needs a few more who are > 185cm given Kouta will finish up soon and we'll have Stevens, Bentick, Murphy etc in 2 years throughout the middle who aren't that tall for midfielders when you compare to say the bulldogs; Cooney around 186, Griffen 186.

Its a good point Bluemike. It just depends on if AW and JR become regular midfielders in the future. Then we would not have a problem with it. But if our midfield consists of all players 182 and lower then it might be. Carrazzo, Bentick, Blackwell, Stevens, Scotland would be a bit of a problem.
WC have a lot of small mids but also Embley and Judd to balance it out. They have also drafted taller mids in Butler and Waters in the last few years who are coming through.
Sydney are pretty short in the midfield but I would not be looking at them for a model of how to build a team. I want the draft used and not trading for players by giving up good picks. Trading is done to get more draft picks and not players is how I want Carlton to go about things in the next 3 years.

I was told Sammy was a few cms taller than his 180 a while ago. Not sure how much taller. The 180 figure is taken at the start of last year. He was born March 89 so that would mean he had just turned 16 at the time. So by the time of Nov 06 and the next draft we could expect and hope for a lot of growing. He takes a good mark and would like him on the half forward flank and if he was 187cms or something like that it would be great by the time he had finished growing.

Any idea what his weight is Mojo, also regarding Tommi remember Blackwell was very small to and he has filled out some, but a rookie spot for Tommi would be good so that we can feed him up and get him into our weights program which should build him up over a couple of years without using a spot on the senior list. Although as mentioned by someone before we have a lot of smallish mids on the list with Blackwell, Bentick etc.. so do we really need another or should we go for someone taller and heavier.

I'd rather have one of the players you've profiled, unless you can write up a profile on Tommi and convince us of his potential.
Under the father-son he'd only cost us a 3rd round pick.

Still that would mean we'd have to rate him in about our top 30 in this year's "superdraft" for us to pick him. Hopefully he's in for a big year and has some serious claims come draft time.

I think that was the point. Is he worth a 3rd round pick in the superdraft?

Based on the testing for 2005 and 174cms and 58kgs and a 3.14 for the 20m and a shocking agility test he does not. If he improves his speed and agility testing by a bit and adds 3 or 4 cms and a lot of weight then the situation might change. He is coming from a long way back at this stage. Will be top aged by the next draft.

I would not have Tommi in the top 50 at this stage (until I see his updated testing in 3 weeks). Sammy I would have in the 25 to 30 range. Just my early opinion.

All I can do is repeat what i was told.

Had a growth spurt and will surprise a lot of people with it. Is small but ripped with his shirt off. Very fit and might get a 15 in the beep test. His old man is helping him out a lot in the off season.

They test them on March 23 and I will put up the figures when they are passed on to me if Sandy do not update there website with them.

Fingers crossed they are good.

Sorry i should have been clearer i meant Sheldons weight not Tommis.:D

Understandibly, kids generally have to have the physical attributes to go along with the footballing nous, but in the case of young Johnston, I don't think he'll ever be the athletic-type footballer. Point is, whilst improvement in 'tests' such as the agility and 20m sprints is important to an extent, I don't think it should be taken into too much consideration if you're tossing the coin on whether or not to draft him (moreso as a late round pick or as a rookie).

He is, from all accounts and from the few times I've seen him play, a footballer's footballer - understands the game inside out, has a solid skills basis, and a knack for finding the leather. Speed is never going to be his forte, and I daresay his size will always be a restriction of sorts if he ever reaches the top level. But whilst it's always handy to have a David Spriggs-esque athletic prowess, you can't always teach the footballing ability he appears to have.

The size and weight will come in time, I don't think it's fair to ask for a substantial growth spurt over one pre-season. God works in mysterious ways. For all you know, he could be the deadset second coming of his father physique-wise.

He's not a top 30 talent, and perhaps not even a top 40 one, but if he's worth a rookie spot, it shouldn't have to all come down to these little tidy bits. If the footballing talent is there, you punt on it.
