I seem to recall Tony Lockett cleaning up a player with a late hip and shoulder when he was playing for Sydney but can't remember the name of the player he hit. It seemed really bad at the time as he kinda jumped into it similar to the one he did in 1994. Can anyone remember this incident or is my memory fading worse than a coles matchhead?

No, I'm talking about when plugger played for Sydney, The Caven incident happened in 1994, He joined the swans in 1995.

The AFL have erased all evidence of such wild and fanciful accusations.

Was that an Essendon game at the G?

Can't remember, I just have him as a vision running out from the goal square (in sydney colors) and full pelt hip and shouldering someone at around the 40m mark or so. The guy who he cleaned up was running with the flight of the ball to take a mark iirc and plugga arrived late, jumped a little and just yeah. I've seen the Caven incident and it's definitely not that, but hey, maybe I'm cross confusing memories of something here.

Yeah I'm getting flashes of him charging Wanganeen or Fletcher on the members' side around 40/50m...could be dreaming

The player he cleaned up was Essendon's Gavin Wanganeen at the MCG in 1996. I am certain that is the incident you have described.

Hmm donno, the player I am remembering was kind of a no name guy.. and maybe taller.

Could be this game? Can't find any footage of it though

SYDNEY 25.19.169 defeated MELBOURNE 7.11.53

A massive 116 point victory to the Swans over the Demons at the MCG this
afternoon.

Swans' full-forward Tony Lockett could be in trouble with the AFL
Tribunal after he crashed into Melbourne defender Shaun Smith during the
third quarter. Smith was knocked out and stretchered from the ground.
Plugger Lockett wasn't reported, but will certainly come under intense
video scrutiny in the next few days with a charging report likely

He got two weeks for it I think in the end..... but sounds like it may be it, a charge and the guy stretchered off... donno until I see it though.

I think the incident you might be thinking off was in round 21 or 22 in 1996. He was chasing another player out to the wing and a second Bomber came across and tried to shepherd him away from the contest. The attempted shepherd was quite vigorous and Lockett put his arm up to protect himself as contact came.

It went to the tribunal and they deemed he had no case to answer.

I can't remember exactly but I think one of the Essendon players might have been Bernard.

The contest actually injured Lockett and the whole of Sydney was on "groin watch" for the next 3 weeks as the finals got underway. He missed the QF, returning just in time to kick that point against the Bombers in the PF.

From memory the peter caven incident was cavens fault but lockett got rubbed out. Caven charged him and lockett being the mountian he was just ran into him. I remember caven on the footy show or something hitting a manikan of lockett with a baseball bat or something like that.

I cant remember the exact detail but i remember the report was unjustified and lockett really had no case to answer but he was rubbed out anyway.

Anyone who listened to audio of the event should know that it wasn't Lockett's fault. Peter Caven fair dinkum headbutted Lockett in the point of his elbow :D

I think the player might have been Barry Young. He sat in the hole about 40m out and wore a descent hit from Lockett coming out of the square.
