Top 10 historical moments in the history of the Adelaide Crows – 1991-2005

10) Adelaide Crows vs. Fitzroy Football Park Round 12 1991
7.8 = 50 defeated 7.5 = 47 (31,173)

After trailing all night to the leagues cellar dweller the Adelaide Crows received 2 very dubious free kicks in the last 45 seconds of the game. This allowed Rodney Jameson the opportunities to kick the game-winning goal after the siren with 3 seconds left and keep the finals hope for year number 1 alive.

9) Adelaide Crows vs. Carlton Princess Park Round 17
7.13 = 55 Defeated 6.12 = 48 (13,509)

After travelling to the West Coast, Geelong, Collingwood, St Kilda and Hawthorn and recording extremely heave losses of over 10 goals the Adelaide Crows beat there first real powerhouse Victorian side on the road.

8) Adelaide vs. Hawthorn Round 12 Waverly Park 1992
15.13 = 103 defeated Hawthorn 15.12 = 102 (21,119)

Darrel Hart sealed this Queens birthday victory for the Adelaide Crows and showed the premiers from 1991 that they were the real deal and had a very bright future; in fact there future was so bright they needed shades.

7) Adelaide vs. Hawthorn Round 9 Football Park 1995
9.6 = 60 Defeated 7.16 = 58 (38,747)

As another victory was getting away from the Adelaide Football Club and newly appointed senior coach Robert Shaw; a new superstar was about to stamp his name on the Adelaide Football Club history and kick a very memorable goal in just his 3rd AFL game. Andrew McLeod beat Ray Jencke to the ball and kicked the game-winning goal at the golf course end. What a start to a wonderful career, lucky Fremantle liked the look of Chris Groom.

6) Adelaide vs. Port Adelaide Round 4 Football Park 1997
11.6 = 72 Lost to 11.17 = 83 (47,256)

With the number of 18 in bright red pen, Malcolm Blight would simply suggest that losing to the newly formed cross town rivals would serve as a timely wake up call. 21 weeks latter the Adelaide Crows would win there first premiership. Port Adelaide vs. Adelaide Crows showdowns get the heart pumping and outside of finals no other games means more to the fans of both clubs.

5) Adelaide vs. Hawthorn Round 1 Football Park 1991
24.11 = 155 Defeated 9.15 = 69 (44,902)

“Get some Hawk on your fork” was how the banner read that the AFC first 21 player were to run thought and that exactly what they did. The debut game for this fledgling club and the Adelaide Crows certainly did serve it up the side regarded as the best club side in the last 15 years.

4) Adelaide vs. Hawthorn Elimination final MCG 1993
16.14 = 110 Defeated 13.17 = 95 (55,287)

After finishing the regular season with a record 13 victories the boys were into the finals for the first time to play Hawthorn at the MCG. No body out side of SA game them a legitimate chance at winning, but history tells us they did win it only to be knocked out by another twist of fait after leading Essendon by 42 point at Half time of the preliminary final.

3) Adelaide vs. Western Bulldogs Preliminary final MCG 1997
12.21 = 93 defeated 13.13 = 91 (70,088)

Irony would reverse it self today as the Adelaide Crows would stage a brave fight back from half time to win it’s way though to it very first day Grand Final. The core group of seniors player left over from the 1993 loss knew how it was possible to over come a large deficit at half time and suggested that fait reversed it favour it took away 4 years earlier. 12 months on the boys were back at the MCG but didn’t need any inspirational fight back to win a second preliminary final against the same club.

2) Adelaide Vs North Melbourne Grand Final MCG 1998
15.15 = 105 Defeated 8.22 = 70 (94,431)

The second time is just as sweet and the 3rd flag would take a miracle. Second year in the job and M Blight took the Adelaide Crows to a second flag, and before you knew it he was gone. Premiership successes are hard work and gone before you know so this one had to be enjoyed.

1) Adelaide Vs St Kilda Grand Final MCG 1997
19.11 = 125 Defeated 13.16 = 94 (99,645)

6 years, 3 coaches and just over 150 players in and out of the door amounted to that one day in September, success had finally arrived at West lakes. The Mecca of Australian Rules Football was finally ours and Andrew Mcleod was the winner of his first Norm Smith medal, 12 months on he was to win his second but this time they had the Adelaide Crows best ever player Mark Ricciuto on the ground. 4 quarters of solid hard nosed football to win on that one-day and a lifetime to remember it.

Well that is my top 10 games the Adelaide Crows have played in, i hope you enjoyed the read.

I am sure others will not agree with them and I don’t expect them to because football is subjective and everyone cannot see it the same way.

Feel free to ague against any game or points I have mad or if you felt that game was misplaced in order even missed, as I have not included any game from last year. I felt it was fitting to finish with the preliminary finals and Grand Finals as the top few, anything after that has to play second fiddle.

Thanks Crows98. :thumbsu:

Im not sure if i understand your criteria for judging this list. Are you looking for the top crows games in relation to the quality of the match, or the top 10 games in relation to the importance and impact on the club?

In my options that list is the top 10 historical moments. For example number 9 vs. Fitzroy was the first after the siren victory the Crows had and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Good picks C98

I would have liked to have seen an analysis or discussion of 2 games. Both were low scoring affairs...but the tension was up all day.

One was against West Coast and the other was Nth Melbourne. In the Nth game I recall Gerard Healy saying 10 minutes into the last quarter :eek: ''the next goal will win'' and he was right, just good pressure football. The West Coast game was probably 97ish as was the NTh game and was just a great game of tackle pressure football.

I felt in both those games that the Crows stood up and it helped them believe when it was needed at the end of the season.

I enjoyed that list

Another 2 games that stick to my mind are:

Adelaide Crows vs West Coast Eagles - Round 22 2005
Match for top spot... and I was there to witness it :) What made it more thrilling to me was that I placed 2 bets on the game... Ist bet was that Perrie would kick the first goal.. I had $10 and it was paying 14/1...$140... within 30 seconds perrie marked the ball and had a set shot.. I was behind the goals he was kicking too...HE HIT THE POST!!!! The second bet I had was for the Crows to win under 20points which was paying 5/1 so i made $250

Adelaide Crows vs Melbourne - 2nd Semi-Final 2002
What can be said that hasnt aready been said before about this game... always a great game to watch for me personally... just the way it was our 3rd travelling game in a row (from perth, to brisbane then to melbourne). It was great to bounce back after getting our asses handed to us by the Lions. Such a see-saw game

Great list, have seen all those games as they unfolded and they all have the common theme of great emotion, even the downer of the first Showdown loss. Apart from the grannies, the inaugural game against Hawthorn (which scared the Vics sh#tless as they thought they'd created a monster) and the Prelim comeback against the Bullfrogs are the highlights for me. And I'm sure future lists will include the Semi Final mauling of the PAP's last year - a proud moment that single handedly wiped away all the embarassment of those Ayres inspired cave-ins of years gone by.

Pretty good list there and I couldn't query much of it. That Match against Hawthorn in 1995 was the first game of football I have ever seen live and to this day that McLeod match winning goal remain clear as a crystal in my memory.

Another game that I will never forget what that match against Carlton at Optus Oval in thunder and lightenting when Roo played proabaly the most inspirational game by a captain I have ever seen. I think it was round 4 or 5 in 2001.

I was at that game - not sure what was scarier - the weather or the aggro carlton supporters!.

I remember seeing a huge crack of lightning at the very moment the ump bounced the ball to start the game. I think we had lost 3 in a row - so it must have been round 4.

It was a defining moment in Andrew McLeod’s career and for a very long time it will be a part of the history of this football club.

Yes good get Stiffy_18 and I forgot about that one, that game should have made the list, as it was a very defining moment in the history of the Adelaide Crows and Mark Ricciuto as Captain.

It was one of the first occasions that Mark Ricciuto took control of the game and piggybacked us to victory as captain; he had done in the past but not with the responsibility as captain.

I was at that game as well and I nearly had hypothermia from the rain, I could not feel below my waste for at least 3 hours.

All I remember about that game is saying on the way back to the hotel is that we will make the finals now, after that win I was confident we had a side that could make the finals.

It rained from that moment on for the entire weekend - we had gone over to see my daughter who was at Melb.Uni and stayed at the Princes Park motel a shortish walk from the oval - but slightly uphill and it was like we were walking back to Adelaide in that rain. I reckon half the motel was booked out by Crows supporters.

Actually as an aside we took off on the Friday am for Melboure and got as far as Gumeracha when the car broke down and we tried to limp back to Adelaide but gave up at Inglewood - it was my wife's birthday and she wasn't enjoying it one bit - plus we had our young son with us too. One of my older sons heard about it and promptly let us borrow his near new Lancer and off we went later in the pm and got there about midnight - I was a bit stuffed from the ordeal and nearly didnt go to the game - but so glad I did.

Last year's semi final vs port was quite memorable, as was the round 22 game vs west coast last year to take top spot, and then letting the power fans know at their game v freo that night.

i seem to remember a game in 1993 against north melbourne where if my memory serves me correctly - modra took (what was called at the time) 'mark of the century'.. he went on to kick a bag, and the crows won by 2 points.. i would rank that definetely in my top 10 games

Was that Schimmelbuschs last game as coach?

Two games I find extremly significant in our history were both in 97
After losing to Port in Showdown 1, the next week we started to get senior players back in the team and we went to Princes Park to play a red hot Footscray. No bastard' rated us a chance and we won by 8 goals.
A week or so later we went to waverly to play Hawthorn and were seriously challenged in the 4th quarter but we stood up and won, alot of games like this in vic we lost.
The significance of this game is the tv interviewed Smart after the siren as we left the field and when asked about this close victory in vic smart said "We have to draw a line in the sand somewhere" inspiring stuff

No Pagan was coaching,it was pre season of that year that we absolutly flogged North and Shimma got sacked

If we're talking historical significance then the semi vs Port last year has to be in it.

If we are talking best matches in our history then without a doubt the game in '93 vs North Melbourne has to be in it. 5 goals down in the 3rd, Carey on fire, then Modra takes mark of the century (until Shaun Smith came along a couple of years later) and bags 10 goals against Archer to single-handedly win the game for us by 2 points. Without doubt one of the greatest games I've been too.

I remember that game vividly. Sitting on the outer flank at the northern end I was looking directly down McGuiness' kick to the square and I just remember the crowd rising as one a split second after Modra himself rose. I have never felt such a chill in my body at a sporting contest that beats that moment. (others come close or even but nothing beats it). Awesome game and one I'll never forget.

Also remember that game in 95 against Hawthorn. Absolutely p***ing down with rain. Half my friends had left at half time. Half the crowd had left at half time!!! We were struggling first half and then steadily worked our way back into the match. When at home my season ticket gives me a seat behind the left goal post 8 rows back... perfect spot to see Macca and Jenke battle it out in the pocket and Macc kick the goal. Amazing stuff and just felt amazing to see it given I had stayed there in the wet all day to support the boys and so many had left.

A game no one has mentioned yet...

Round 22 vs Collingwood 1993
Stadium had its peak crowd at the time from memory. Modra took a few hangers. We made the finals for the first time. Where I was sitting (see above) we had squeezed in a few extra folks and it was half sitting forward half sitting back kinda stuff and an AMAZING atmosphere. (My buddies down there were the guys that had the Godra banner if that gives anyone a better idea of where I'm talking about). Just an amazing buzz all game and I can't say I remember a heck of alot of the game but the celebrations at the end and seeing McGuiness and McDermott embrace will always stick with me.

I was living in Sydney at the time and each Monday I would catch a bus from Glebe into the city and pick up the Advertiser at a Town hall newsagency, well this morning they were sold out.I then got told the nearest place that might have this paper was at Circular Quay, so off I walked only to find out they wernt in yet.I waited around for ages and finnaly they arrived and I couldnt belive what I saw on the front page:eek:
It was a brilliant pic of modra riding ishenko in the goal square with a galliant archer trying to spoil.
The write up of that game had me drooling.
Unfortunatly never seen that game apart from the odd highlights and on the Crows 93 video.:(

That Carlton game early in 2001 was fantastic, i beleive Roo ironed out Lance Whitnell and signalled his intentions for the rest of the match... I also made the journey to Perth from Melbourne ( now living back in Adelaide !! ) for round 22 last year. I remeber Roo collecting Selwood, i was behind the goals at that end and you could HEAR the impact. A west coast supporter infront of me said that Selwood is a tough kid ( i agree there ) and that he would leave the ground on his own steam...i politely mentioned that the only thing involving steam that removes you from a ground after Roo gets ya is a train
