It's plain stupid. They obviously lock in who it is before the draft which is crap, none of the "OMG didn't expect him to go that high". And the suspense with is plain idiotic. You know pretty much the top 10 players, you know pretty much the top 2 players. So saying this year the top 2 is Whitfield and Toumpas, as soon as you here "Pick 2 - Greater Western Sydney Giants, player number 107372 (random number), Jimmy Toumpas, Glenelg (or whatever his team is). You automatically know that it is Whitfield. All you are waiting for is them to hurry up and get too pick 11.

Seems as good a thread as any to post it in. Does anyone know what time the draft will be this year?

I seem to remember it being in the morning a few years ago but I think they shifted it to later in the last couple years?
7:30 on a Thursday I think. Another stupid thing, felt good as waking up early next to the radio to listen to the draft.

Not entirely stupid on behalf of the AFL can sell the rights to the TV coverage for more if its primetime. Would assume FoxFooty would pay less if the coverage was early morning.

It's up there with the AFL denying that tanking exists, completely missing the point that their priority picks meant that supporters hoped their team would lose.
Absolutely moronic.
The person who came up with the 10-1 countdown by rights should be shot, but I'm pliable enough to accept a sacking if they revert back to a natural order.

I know everyone has well and truly covered how amazingly shit this idea is, but I can't help but post as well.

Brought into build suspense, yet it does the exact opposite. Seriously, it actually has the complete reverse effect of what it is meant to have. I don't even care about it because it has absolutely no affect on me, the draft, or life in general but I would dearly love to hear someone attempt to explain the logic of this idea.

Got to admit, from reading Phantoms, I know how I read the leadup to the Richmond pick, in part checking names off in my head considering who is left and who I'd like.

Backwards (even if Richmond isn't at the top of the reviewed order), the 'best' I could do would be 'gee, we passed on him, wonder who we got'...It's just not the same.

I suppose it could build suspense for picks 3-5 or thereabouts, but not a lot.

Or how about this for an idea:

- entire draft done off-camera
- picks and corresponding names are then put into (Andrew Walker's) hat

The telecast begins!

- Vlad picks names out of the hat randomly one by one, announcing them to the world
- recruiting teams yell 'BINGO' once all their picks are read out, winning a meat tray or similar. Could probably come up with a better prize, but you get the idea.
