I'm one of the few that considers Reservoir Dogs a better movie. Why? Hard to say. It goes for a shorter time, has less budget and not as big a cast, but it is the superior flick. I think it is more tense, and it flows better than Pulp. Tough call though. Both are very good.

I didn't hate Batman, but I didn't feel as connected to the movies as I did with Superman. Batman didn't seem to have the magic that Superman did. Maybe it the absence of John Williams music, or the fact that Batman wasn't a particularly likeable character, but i've always considered Superman (and Superman 2, which was filmed at the same time) to be the best superhero adaption ever made. Batman was good fun though, especially the first one.

Thanks Jod. Stupid effort made me laugh too. People, don't realise the entire Tatooine set was destroyed in a sandstorm, and they had to rebuild the entire set. The sets in all the Star Wars films, are magnificent. Many of them took months to build. I can't understand why anyone would say the set design is shabby I'd like to see them back that up by being specific. Star Wars has many things, but one it doesn't have is shabby set design.

I enjoyed Episode I as well. A terriffic movie only marginally behind Episodes 4 and 5. I get sick of peope bagging it. Tall poppy syndrome at it's best. You wait and see them all line up for Episode 2. They'll be there. The dialogue and thematic devices that run through the film are done with the same intent and the same quality as the original three movies. This is done for a reason - to give the viewer a familiar feel with each movie. They are all made in the same way. Some are betetr than others, but the unneccesary exaggerations do get tiresome, IMHO.

I honestly cant decide between Pulp and Dogs...they both have great scripts, fantastic acting and very good direction. I also thank Pulp Fiction for resurrecting Travolta's career as i was always a fan of his. Dan have you heard about the extra bullet theory at the end of Reservoir....you know in the end everyone is pointing a gun at someone and then everyone shoots....well someone shouldnt have been shot..hard to explain, just watch it again and note how many guns there are and how many people get shot.

Cant agree with Superman, i liked Superman but i always thought that Christopher Reeve was a bit to gay to play Superman. They needed someone tougher IMO. I still liked Reeve's performance and the movies but i prefer Batman and Returns. The first two Batmans were great because they stuck to the comic character of the Dark Knight who is tortured by his past and rids the world of evil. They were much darker films than the later efforts. In Forever and Batman & Robin, Batman suddenly turned into a stand up comedian and everybody seemed to know who he was, its like he went shopping in his uniform??? :D

You cant argue against the set design of Star Wars movies...ive seen all those making of shows and all that and some of the sets are completely built up from nothing. There amazing. For example, a movie that is set in say the 1800's about a lost temple in a huge dark jungle can be shot on a temple in a deep dark jungle...but with Star Wars, nothing exists on earth that can double for Tatooine. Sure we got the desert but the buildings all have to be built. You get what i mean?

Anyways just on Menace, the movie would have been better if Jar Jar hadnt been made the comic relief character and some of Anakin's dialogue was better. I read on EInsiders.com that the DVD version is completely retooled with totally new scenes added and some scenes taken away or redone. Stuff like when Anakin accidently takes off in the ship at the end, some of the bad dialogue he says there is taken out. Once i get a DVD player, that will be my first purchase. Oh and im totally with you on John Williams, he really is amazing. I think everyone can hum the Jurassic Park theme on command :D

Always a difficult topic this one but would say:-

Drama - The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, Schindlers List
Thriller - The Sixth Sense (the twist was great)
Horror - Alien/Aliens
Science Fiction - Star Wars
Action - Any of the Indiana Jones Series
Chick Flick - Beaches (that has them reaching for the tissue box)
Musical - The Sound of Music
Comedy - Flying High (I can still remember the first time I saw on the big screen, could not stop laughing) and The Life of Brian
Religious - The Bible

Have I missed any categories?

Worst - with out doubt, Leonard Part VI starring Bill Cosby (thank God they never made parts I-V)

The reason why Christopher Reeve works so well as Superman is because he plays it straight. Who else could deliver the line : "I hope this little incident hasn't put you off flying miss Lane. Statistically speaking it's still the safest way to travel"

Only he could deliver that line with a seriousness that belies the corniness. He is supposed to be a likebale charcter (i.e not macho) because he is supposed to portray vulnerability (which he does)

For all his superpowers and his muscular physique under the suit, Christopher Reeve has a vulnerability that compliments his character so well. Ironically, Lois Lane does not seem vulnerable. She is sure of herself. Ironic isn't it? I think Reeve plays his duel roles of Clark Kent and Superman wonderfully. As I said, he plays it straight, and has a charming honesty. You need an actor who can deliver the lines in a way that doens't over-do the corniness.

There might be Superman re-makes in the future, as well as other Superhero adaptions, but I don't think anyone will get it quite as right as the 1978 version. In my opinion anyway.

You make a very good point. Taking that into consideration i think your right about Reeves. I have heard that they are planning to redo Superman with Nicolas Cage in the suit??? Dont know how that one would go, you would thinkCage would need more hair though, he seems to be receding.

In my experience, what every 10 year old kid would prefer to be would be the Terminator or some martial arts legend. I don't think any of the films featuring these sorts of characters is known for its character development,

Yeah I heard that, but like I said, I don't think any other Superman re-makes will get it quite as "right" as the '78 version. Nicholas Cage has a bad case over "over-acting" disease.

Watched again today Citizen Kane.

Man, what a film. Orson Welles first film, which he wrote, produced, directed and starred in. Sadly, he spent the rest of his life trying to surpass it, which he never did.

Voted by many critics as the greatest film of all time.
If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour as they say.

By far and away the best film ever made (in my opinion):
GALLIPOLI

And you can pick the other 4 from somewhere in this group:
Clerks (Kevin Smith is a film legend)
Shawshank Redemption (dumass)
Scream
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
From Dusk till Dawn
Eye for an Eye (you'll never find a better bad guy than Keifer Sutherland)
Primal Fear (well, maybe Edward Norton - loved this film)
Toy Story 1 & 2 (generates so many emotions, and they're not even real actors)
Tombstone
The Replacements (put it down for the feel good movie of 2001! Brilliant stuff!)
Buffy (can't help it, I'm an addict!)
Flying High (funny! funny! stuff!)
Fight Club
Dead Poet's Society (Brilliant Movie)
The Mummy 1 & 2 (Brendan Fraser.....YUM)
Here on Earth (chick flick of 2001)
Fried Green Tomatoes (can't help it, love it!)
Schindler's List (Brilliant stuff....love liam neeson in this film)
What's eating Gilbert Grape?
Bread & Roses
Shrek
Top Gun
Hudson Hawk (hate Bruce Willis, love the movie)
The Matrix
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Jaws
All quiet on the western front
The great escape
Cry Baby
Mad Max
Empire Records
The mighty ducks (can't help it, makes me all happy and stuff)
Monty Pythons collection (especially life of brian)
Snatch
Con Air
Gone in 60 Seconds
Pride & Prejudice (well, that's a series, but I love it!)

:D

There are too many that I like to chose a small group - but there is one that stands out above all the rest for me and that is Schindlers List. A very powerful movie and I see something different in it each time I watch it.

Totally agree xbinny, he is brilliant, have you seen Dogma & Mall Rats as well? Dogma is my fav of his movies, that was sooo funny, only thing I was a bit disappointed about, was it got a bit schmaltyz at the end, but overall an incredible movie. :)

Funniest movie Tom Hanks ever made! Igrew up watching that movie every weekend with mates.

Some of the scenes still bring a tear to the eye:
"Is that a footlong?"
"And then some..." :D

"Do we call you Mr. ****, or Nick?"

1. The Godfather & The Godfather II: You could watch these two movies 100 times and still find something new and intriguing. Cinematic perfection.

2. Citizen Kane: Because I want to appear like an intellectual, when really I'm not. :D Seriously though, watch this movie more than once so that you can get your head around it and you'll know what real story-telling is about. Life-changing! And who would have thought that "Rosebud" was his favourite pair of fishnet underpants! ;) Of course you could just watch The Simpsons episode with "Bobo" (Mr Burns' teddy bear) in it and you would get the basic jist!

3. North By Northwest: This movie has it all. Hitchcock's best in my less than humble opinion.

4. This Is Spinal Tap: For bored drunken fools like myself, reciting lines from this movie is a revelation. Simply hilarious.

5. The Holy Grail: See number 4.

On another note, I must profess my complete distain for the movie American Beauty. The only thing that movie broke ground on, was that the Yanks finally realised about their culture, what the rest of the world has known for at least 50 years! Other than that, the story line was predictable and boring.

Oi!! What's this with Aussie movies being crap??

I've always loved a decent Aussie film. I tend to enjoy the stories that Australians tell about themselves. They're a bit restricted in terms of genre - if you're after sci-fi or comic book blockbuster, then look elsewhere (with some exceptions - Mad Max for instance). But what we do, I think, we generally do well.

To mention a few faves:

Breaker Morant
Sunday too far away
High tide
Struck by lightning
Death in Brunswick
The Club
The year my voice broke
Malcolm
Man of flowers

We tend to be very good at unassuming, often quirky character studies, as many of the above are (this may translate into a big fat BORING for many, but I enjoy them).

Funnily enough, I'm not really taken some of the more well known Aussie flicks. The Piano, I thought, was too dour, slow and claustrophobic. Croc Dundee was a bit of a charicature played by a very wooden Paul Hogan - an innocuous time-filler for mine. And if you wan't see how disastrous it can be when Australian films try to look and sound American, check out a piece of effluence called 'Frauds.'

I'm a bit late as usual but here goes:

BEST 5
--------

1. Electric Dragon 80,000 Volts
(by Japanese Filmmaker Ishii Sogo. It's (to quote a friend) "a black & white manga superhero noisefest that just rocks!!!!!!!!!" The soundtrack is done by Ishii Sogo's punk/dub band, and the whole thing works so well. Perfect film!!!!!)

2-5 in no particular order:

Planet Of The Apes
(the original - i actually came home from work one night a little bit pissed on saw that it was on tv 10mins later at about 2:30am. Since i'd been wanting to watch it for a while, i watched it in bed. I knew nothing about it at all apart from the fact that there were apes involved, and being a bit pissed and with my brain not completely functioning properly, it wasn't until the final shot when i realised what the hell was going on. It was awesome! I wish i could watch it like that again.)

The Usual Suspects (i've probably watched it about 100 or so times now and i still find myself picking up new things here and there.)

Chopper (something about Chopper i love. It just seems to capture that early 80's seedy "Bojangles" vibe perfectly. It's a dirty film about dirty people. I love it!

Duel (this movie used to scare the shhit out of me when i was little. It was Steven Spielberg's first film, i think, and it's just such an intense movie, even though there's really only one thing going on throughout the whole thing! Would have cost nothing to make, and would put Lord Of The Rings to shame as an action movie, and even as an adventure movie, although in a completely different sense.)

There's probably another 500 films i like just as much as those ones.........except Electric Dragon which is #1.

WORST
-----------

1. Lord Of The Rings
(pile of junk. For an "action" movie, which it is, the "action" scenes were pathetic! It looked great - fantastic at times - but that's about it.)

I don't watch movies i don't like more than once, so LOTR is the only bad one fresh in my head.

5 Best Films:

1. Three Colours Red
Incredibly moving film, brilliantly acted, fantastically real, and looks superb.

2. Pandora's Box
You'll never see a more erotic performance in your life than Louise Brooks' performance here. From the opening scene until her death at the hands of Jack the Ripper, she eats the male (and a female) characters for breakfast and all with wide eyed innocence.

3. Amelie
Currently in the Cinemas, so if you have a spare couple of hours, check it out. A beautiful and offbeat love story. Very funny and very touching.

4. The Double Life of Veronique
See Three Colours Red.

5. Diary of a Lost Girl
As in Pandora's Box, Louise Brooks again charges up the screen. This time she plays a victim with a heart of Gold.

5 Worst Films

1. Citizen Kane - What a waste of time.
2. Godfather 1 - Over rated
3. Godfather 2 - See Godfather 1.
4. Godfather 3 - See Godfather 1 & 2.
5. Ben Hur - Stupid Film.

some more great Australian films

- Wake in Fright
- Bliss
- The Bank
- Bad Boy Bubby
- Changing Places
- The Castle
- 40,000 Horsemen
- Jedda
- Storm Boy
- Careful he might hear you
- Caddie
- Lantana
- The Sum of Us
- Man of Flowers
- My First Wife
- Golden Braid
- Praise

cheers
