With the emergence of other midfield options I think we should trade one of them whilst still at some value. I guess it depends on what clubs are prepared to offer but I think it should seriously be considered. They didn't do much tonight and we were not too bad without their influence. I know they are underdone and will only get better over the next month or so. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, the way the system is now, you would get nothing but a 2nd round pick for them which would be an insult to both and a shocking trade for us.

Clubs just don't give up promising kids for senior players any more.

silly idea, they are both coming off slow pre seasons due to injury, they will be of more value in a few rounds, and they would have little trade value despite there importance

It's all about discussing how we can improve our side and hopes of going all the way in the future. If you want to be a bitter, close minded little prat then that's your problem.

And exactly what do you think we would get for them ?

Its all well and good to say trade them (which personally I think is a stupid idea anyway) but you have to get something in return.

What player would you want and do you think that club would trade them ?

Yep tool definately comes to mind . Just what value to the club do you want to get by trading two through and through Bombers? I would have thought that the events of 2002/2003 when we where forced to trade away some of our sole would still have alarm bells ringing. What is wrong with letting two great players finish their careers in the red and black? And who says we cant go all the way in the future if we still have them? I am not closed minded i just dont see the value in trading away two popular players who we wouldnt get a huge amount back for . We have just got back on the path of having a happy comitted playing group and we are supposed to trade away two valuable parts of it:confused: Being a regular around the club you can really notice the difference this year compared to the previous few seasons , this is something you dont want to mess with.;)

I do like laugh at being called a little prat though , being 6 foot and 110kg it is a while since i have been called little lol :D

We're 5th on the ladder we want to get rid of one of our two best players from last season.

Maybe jumping the gun a little?.

Fair enough then. Thanks for your opinion, that's what I wanted, not to be abused for starting a discussion on the club we all love.

Only two games in and you want to trade a Johnson. JJ missed all of pre season, MJ has had injury worries, too. Trade them and trade the heart out of Essendon. They will only improve. The other midfield options you refer to are skinny kids. These two have strong bodies and are experienced mid fielders.
I don't care what clubs are offering, the Johnsons are required players - at Essendon, as well as on field leaders.

When you trade great players you need to take a variety of things into account:
Salary Cap Pressure- With Hird, Rioli and sadly Rama possible loses that should not be an issue.
Draft Picks- With a probable mid table finish we will have reasonable to good picks in a STRONG draft. If you were able to get a high first round pick perhaps worth consideration but other clubs ie Hawthorn seem to be keeping picks. The only father/son possibility was Jake Foulds from Calder but he is injury prone and wont come into draft calculations. Thus we will have 3/4 selections without any commitments.
Evolutionary Replacements- MJ is pretty unique style of player and no one on our list seems to be a ready replacement. JJ is a mature bodied ob who gives grunt. He is a strong member of mf rotation when fit.
My feeling is we dont trade either player UNLESS a team like Freo finish bottom two and Harvs decides to trade pick for proven grunt;)

in some ways what is the point of trading a proven player to hopefully get another proven player, there are no gurantees in the draft. lots of highly decorated top 10 players have not gone onto be great consistent footballers. Even some of the top picks (top 5) such as travis johnstone (took 8 years, to show something), brad ottens and des headland have struggled.

This year you would have to say is the last for peverill and rioli, maybe and most likely hird. Thats a lot of experience leaving the club and i dont think we could afford to lose the johnsons this year. Besides this year is being tipped as the superdraft and if its anything like the hodge, ball and judd draft there hopefully this time we dont pick another shane harvey out of the bunch and get a midfield winner ala del santo or james kelly.

Bad starts to the year (one recovering from injury) and it's "trade 'em, trade 'em, trade 'em".

They always play their best footy at the end of the year anyway, which is what you want, isn't it?

Untouchable.

when was the last time essendon traded any player that put in hard for us?

usually we trade players like jacobs or richards who are fringe players who COULD develop into hald decent players, we dont usually trade players who are part of our A group, please no one say wanganeen because he left us, different circumstances.
