Ok, barring a couple of wins - which (and I mean this nicely as an opposition fan, not trying to incite anything) seem a little unlikely - Gold Coast will finish bottom, and at least the bottom 2.

My question is this - with Picks 1-3 being coveted by all clubs and with a plethora of early round pics should the Coast push for snapping up a key position player or continue to blood youth?

Some of your boys are around 2 years away still from cutting the figure of a player meeting their potential - but surely the GC faithful won't wait around 2 years to see a handful of wins at Metricon.

So, I put this to you GC fans - trade or draft?

I've mentioned it before, what the Suns need to keep an eye on are a KPF to help ease the pressure on Day and Lynch, though Dixon may help in that regard in a pinch and maybe some cover for the inside mids.

If we get pick #1, we'll use it to get Whitfield.

Pick #2, we'll be trading it to GWS for a mini-draft pick.

We won't be using either of those to get a key position play. They're far too high.

Maybe a combination of later picks to get a mature body.

I think that's silly, and if we go after another one of those mini picks i'll be pretty annoyed with the club to be honest.

realistically we should get either pick 1 or pick 2. Use it on the best available kid in the draft. We've got a heap of talent on our list we can trade, and some compensation picks we could use to trade for a KP player, I hope we dont waste pick 1/2.

Why would you want Whitfield. Don't you have plenty of his type?

With the rumors Adelaide have contacted Cloke, it looks like they might offload Tippet if he is keen on going, are we any chance you think to snag him, as much as we want to back our kids in, that big body would prove to be invaluable to our line up.

I'm not sure about Tippet to be honest. I'm not sure about his game (relies on athleticism too much) and I'm not sure on his body (who knows with those concussions). I'm all for getting a big body in, but wouldn't want to build around him for the future. There's a reason that Adelaide want Cloke.

The problem with free agents is that you'll be stunting the development of the young players by playing free agents. I know that at least from experience in other sports, players really do not enjoy having their jobs taken from guys brought in from opposition clubs where they are being financially rewarded for past performances, only to sit on their butts and not play for the next big deal.......as much as I love him, look at Jars or Brownie. Tippett made more sense last season, as it would have been a 2-4 year rental and you could manage your forwards a bit better. But having seen his run of concussions and injuries pile up, with another year on the odometer, you really have to wonder what his value is relative to the cost?

We'll be culling 1-2 of our mature age veterans I'm sure by years end. I'd say we finish the year keeping Ablett, Harbrow, Brennan, Rischa and Bock...dumping Fraser, Brown and a few of the fringe kids on the list. With Jaeger coming up, we'd need to take a hard look at the next generation of talent to come up. The only reason to get any of the available FA's would be if they still had something left to offer from a leadership AND playing perspective, and aren't going to clog the pipeline for the mandatory picks that they will need to make.

Personally, if we were to go after some Mature age players looking to switch clubs, I'd be far more keen to snatch up 1 or 2 Warnock or Bock style players...guys who can do the job in defense for the next few years while we develop competent players behind them. Defense takes so much longer to cultivate then offense I think, so you can stop putting forwards, wings and mids into defense (see dixon, weller, mckenzie) to stop up holes in the roster from injury.

My 2 cents.

Don't shoot the messenger. ;)

Scotty Clayton made it quite clear that we're going to be active with the mini-draft again. And with us falling low on the ladder, it leaves us extremely well placed to be successful.

Not sure I undertand this thinking Sunny, why would we give up the 1-2 pick for the same pick next year, as I understand it this years draft is very strong. As Super Nova has stated I would like us to get the best kid availble now, he should slot straight into the side along with O'Meara it would be like getting 2 No1 picks.

It depends entirely on where we finish, Iva. If we get pick #1, I think we will use it to get the best available kid this year.

However, if we get pick #2, we could use it to get a MD player, Martin for instance, who is a chance to go #1 next year.

Or such is my understanding of the situation.

I think GWS want pick 1 and would be prepared to negotiate for it!

Pick 1 for MD2 plus pick (4,5,6) which ever pick they get for pick MD1.

GWS get pick 1&2 this years draft, GC get a top 10 pick and can select an inside mid.

I wouldn't be totally against that, but it depends on how the recruiting see it. At around 4,5 or 6, we would be able to select Oliver Wines, one of the best inside mids in the draft who's ready to go. Would be absolutely stoked if we got him. Obviously we have a real need for his type. Wines and Prestia in the middle will also relieve Swallow and Ablett a bit.

Have to agree. Ollie Wines has been close to the top of my list for most of the year. Granted we should always go for the best player available in the draft (which is going to be Lachy Whitfield any day of the week) but we have enough of the flashy receiving mids IMO. Someone who can go in and get their own ball would really be an asset to the midfield we are building!

Ok, so we could move up a spot, I see the logic.

personally i think whether its pick 1 or 2 both kids are going to be gun footballers. I suppose it just depends on whether we want another player now or in a years time. I suppose there is always the chance that the club will trade the pick for a ready made gun (no idea who) or as I have said befroe trade it fro a big body and a lower pick 8-9.

To me if we trade on pick 1 or 2 (of the assumption we are going to finish 17th or 18th.) for an experienced player...this to me means we've hit the panic button in our 5-6 year development plan and the board/admin staff have buckled under the pressure.

Stay the course, use the pick on the best available kid and back our development and structures in place at the club.

<--- me shooting the messenger Sunny :p

The positive thing about the mini draft is that it reduces the pressure to reduce our list, we still get one of the best talents in the draft but it gives us a year to develop them without taking up list space. In saying this I hope we don't get Martin, seems to be some problems there regarding his father.

Wouldn't blame you if you got Jack Martin with pick 2 (assuming you guys beat GWS this week). Martin, Bennell and O'Meara equals a lot of midfield class over the next decade.

If I was Scott Clayton, I'd probably take Wines with the second pick. Will be an elite inside midfielder and has quite good pace and a good kick. He'd fit in perfectly. Have to take Whitfield with pick 1 if you end up with it, he looks a class above the others in this draft.

Mmmm an inside mid is what we need. If we get pick 1 definatly get Lachie, but if we get 2, I don't know if I would want to enter this mini draft again, I would get this Wines kid, as you guys are saying he is good in and under, I don't think we need a player that can only start playing for us in 2014, this year is suppose to be a great batch of kids, make use of them now.
