so with the exit of Croad, the resigning of the Wiz to a reduced but longer contract, the dockers are looking at a gap in their salary cap, by some estimates at somewhere near 3-400000 per year. enough to land a very good to star player. (minus 100 k for resignings)
now i know many of you proud purple guys are of the opinion that we dont need to trade, and that the list is fine and developing well as it is, which i agree with, but lets be honest, if we can significantly improve our list, boost the midfield with another high possession winner or get another effective forward, then we have to go for it right?
off the top of my head there are a few potential WA sons that would be keen to come home, Jon Hay, Josh Carr and Darren Gaspar. troy longmuir would love a run at a club that will give him decent oppurtunity in the forward line, and a couple of our raw recruits are coming up well and have some trading value, like gilmore.
but obviously the biggest prize mould be Mark Coughlan.
Iv been trying to come up with a few trades for couglan, and havent come up with a suitable direct trade. Mark is a marquis player, probably number 3 on their list, maybe even higher because of the age of Brown and Richo. Imagine Adelaide trying to dislodge Pavlich. hes not going to come cheap.
say even if he decides to quit richmond, putting richmond in the position of losing their No 1 midfielder for nothing, i dont think we would be able to offer up a suitable trade, even then. these sort of players dont get let go without top 6 draft picks with secondary players, which we wont be able to match, directly at least.
so heres what im thinking, Adelaide and Richmond are looking to rebuild, they need draft picks and good young players. we send Byron Shammer to Adelaide for their top 5 pick (say, number 3), send that pick to Richmond, and get Coughlan. obviously there could be some wrangling around this, like throwing a second tier player into the mix (like T.Lo or Gilmore), or giving up our first round pick (i reckon it will be pick 14) but thats the gist.
we can offer him a good chance of success, a good wage and the chance to live at home. we lose shammy, who im a big fan of, but we dont have to give him a pay rise, and i think you'll agree our midfield looks substantially better with a young Dyer medal winner in the prime of his career slotted in at number 4 in our midfield. it could even be the push for pavlich to move to the mobile CHF role he would be so good at.
i was thinking richmonds current woes might be good for this prospect, but they could have the opposite effect, as they may value him more highly than ever as the lynchpin of thier rebuilding. if theres a player shake up he may be offered the captaincy as early as next year.
on the other hand, if coughers doesent like the way things are going over there (and lets face it, your employer looking for a multi-million dollar handout just to pay your wage is never nice) then maybe the impetus for the move will come from him. likewise this possibility may be contingent on adelaide getting a priority pick and getting two picks in the top 5
whaddya think? can we concievably get coughers? who else could we go for, and how? a hay or gaspar may be good reason to throw macpharlap or polak forward. have i missed any obvious targets? whos on our trade table?
