I don't see why we wouldn't pick up Matt Campbell. I think we already look like we're batting deeper than we did this season and he could only help with that.

I would still be surprised if Grimley is delisted, I reckon he's contracted for next year.

We have too many ruck options for Grimley to make it, in my opinion. Time to start developing him as a key defender (which is how he made his name in the U/18s) or cut him loose.

Not sure we're batting deeper.

Compared to the start of 2012, we've lost Murphy, Young, Bateman, Bruce, Gilham and only brought in two players (Lake and Spangher) that can slot in and play immediately. On top of Ozzie and Whitecross with ACL recoveries. Don't think we're deeper at all this season.

Also not sure if Campbell would fix that at all.

With some of the talk that Grimley may be in line for the chop in the next two day I went back and had a look at the 2009 draft to see if any names pop out that we may of missed out on. Only two jump out at me one is Ben Stratton and we got him:thumbsu: and the other is Allen Christensen taken with the very next pick by Geelong. Does anyone know who we may of drafted if say Sydney had taken Grimley with the pick before ours?(This would throw Sam Reid's name into the mix as well)

I remember Hawthorn were very keen for a ruckman at the time as Campbell retired and Bailey was still injured. Their first choice was Max Gawn but he went to Melbourne with pick 34. Apart from Grimley, there was also talk of James Craig, Jack Fitzpatrick and Broc McCauley were in the picture.

Grimley was taken at pick 39 as it was thought that Adelaide would take him with pick 45.

There wasn't any talk about Vardy so he may not have been in the picture, just a good hindsight selection who went at pick 42.

Nah, I remember Vardy being mentioned as pretty much the sole ruckman of the 2009 draft, which was very poor on quality talls.

Richmond have just delisted Jayden Post, I think he would be a handy rookie list pick up.
Has some impressive traits and maybe a change of club could do him some good

I can't remember any talk about Vardy prior to the draft, but he certainly would have been a better selection than Grimley

Where did you find that clip?
It was a Herald-Sun article prior to the 2009 draft - I have it in a scrapbook. I just scanned it.

I have been collecting scraps on Hawthorn since 1977, they are handy for reference sometimes.

Are you the aussie80s guy from youtube? If so, are you planning on putting up some more hawthorn games?

Then there's the Melbourne tanking investigation. If this keeps up, we may end up with the first pick in the draft!! :D

Go us!!
They would have to re-do the fixture as well then . Geelong, Sydney and West Coast all played three times.

Agreed. I also thought that it was the Pies who has their eyes on Grimley at the time. Having thought that they'd hidden him away from other prying eyes we massively surprised them on draft day.

"THE AFL has uncovered a secret meeting involving at least 10 members of the Melbourne football department in which coaches were reminded of the importance of forfeiting matches in order to gain early draft picks.
Can't see Melbourne getting to keep pick 4 after this. Crazy off-season, this one!

Also, Geelong did delist Tom Gillies. Whether we pick him up or not, I don't know, but it's interesting none the less given we were making offers for him a year ago.

Well we can safely say Litherland, Hallahan, Duryea, Cheney and Langford will not be delisted.

Osborne was not entirely unexpected although I thought they would have kept him on.

Delisting Schneider and McCauley yet they are keeping others who showed even less.

If they are keeping Langford, Wanganeen, Frank and Boseley then that is our full complement of rookies for next year.

Grimley and Duryea are 2 very lucky players.

If Langford can still be a NSW s'ship rookie, then he's a bonus onto the full complement, but not sure we can do that for a third year on the rookie list (though we did have Sierakowski as a NSW s'ship rookie for three years last year I think....)

Far out, Osborne delisted, even if we do draft him again in December does that technically mean he won't be eligible to be a veteran on our list? http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/4742/newsid/150496/default.aspx

Also... Schneider stiff.

We can only have a maximum of 2 veterans and I think it would be better to have Mitchell and Hodge take up the veterans positions vacated by Bateman and Osborne due to the amount they free up in the salary cap.
