4 picks, of which one of them is most likely going to be used in the PSD to re-draft Osborne.
So that being the case, we effectively have 3 live picks which is the minimum is it not?
If we pick up Toy, we would then have to drop another off.

If I understand it right, as a delisted player Toy now becomes a free agent, which means he can sign with any club he wants, between tomorrow and Nov 13. If he wanted to go to Hawthorn then he would if Hawthorn wanted him.

As a likely top 3 pick in 2010, had he not been pre-listed, then I would think he is worth taking the gamble on as he would only effectively take up pick 84 at the moment. Just depends what Hawthorn's testing on him showed.

He would be a better selection than Campbell, Bate, Gillies and all the other names that have been floated.
I agree and hope we take the punt on him.

As I understand it, if you pick up a delisted player then that has the same effect as using a draft pick. You only need to make three changes to your list, not 3 actual draft picks. Geelong are heading into the draft with only 2 picks - 16 and 79.

We currently have 4 picks - 29, 68, 72 and 84 so the addition of one player would still leave us with 3 picks anyhow I would think.

Fair enough but I still have a feeling that Oz won't be at the club next year

Perhaps it will then become a toss-up between re-drafting Ossie in the PSD, or whoever is available with out third pick in the national draft...

They did the same thing with Travis Tuck, delisted him and let him train for the summer but had no real intention of redrafting him. I know there are totally different circumstances but once you make that initial decision to axe a player it is hard to come back from that. Brad Scott was about the only one we delisted and re-listed that had an OK career - although that was after we traded him to Brisbane. Ossie has been a great club person so I think they are doing this out of respect for a player.

Many of these cases of delisting and offering to re-list comes from clubs wanting to delist a player who is still contracted so they choose this path. If another club picks them up then they take over the remaining contract, if not then they re-draft a player with their last pick and pay out the remaining year on their contract - a bit like Urquhart at North last year.

Was Osborne still contracted for 2013?

Nup.

That would make sense of the previous maneuvering.

There is a man who would know about Toy's status Roddy27

Yep, Free Agent. Not sure where he stands in terms of clubs being after him and how many competitors there might be, but if he has agreed to join us, we could sign him tomorrow. In theory.

Given that scenario, do you think we'd be more likely to sign Toy or Gillies?

if one has more suitors than the other, it will be Toy, you would think. If he wants to come to us, on that basis, you sign him as you're likely to be able to get Gillies elsewhere. Of course, this is presuming he fills a 'need' more than Gillies.

Can never have enough elite talent on your list :thumbsu:

I'd go Toy. Would cap a remarkable trade period. Getting Toy, Anderson, and Lake all for our second round pick, some shuffling and Gilham would be amazing.

Just had a look at the full list of delisted free agents available http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/150582/default.aspx

I just think we are in our premiership window so we should recruit players who will put selection pressure on next year which will make the team better. Pick 29 is for a youngster but the rest can be delisted players and that would be fine with me.

Delisted free agents the club should consider IMO:

Sam Lonergan
Tom Gillies
Sam Iles
Ricky Pettard
Matt Campbell
Jarred Moore

Obviously we wouldn't recruit them all, but a couple of these guys might help, and certainly wouldn't hurt considering that a kid drafted with Pick 68 is pretty unlikely to have any impact next year. It's all about next year.

There's a name missing from that list:

Jayden Post

Kind of agree. Haven't replaced Young though.

I thought I heard somewhere, possibly in the HS trade week chat that if a player is offered a contract and rejects it, they are illegible to be a delisted free agent... has anyone heard this?

If that's the case then Josh Toy cannot be taken by us as he was offered a 1 year contract by Gold Coast and rejected it...

But... as his name is on this page... I most likely heard or interpreted it wrong

Toy would want a 3 year deal with decent cash amount attached to it!! I thought were trying to make room in our salary cap so we can offer Buddy a new contract??

he'd be a good get, but its hard to know what we consider a more pressing need. An elite talent, yes- but do we need a def/mid? Do we need another kpd more? Like Gillies? Or do we need an attacking half forward/mid?

Hard to know- lots of delisted free agents id look at in the whole scheme of things.

Given our fixture, I rekon we will get a couple players that can step into the team against bottom 10 sides and preform reasonable to give our stars a rest.

Looking at the list these are the players worth a look:
Player (Team) Age, Games Played
Sam Lonergan (Ess) 25, 79
Orren Stephenson (Geel) 30, 8
Josh Toy (GC) 20, 13
Matt Campbell (NM) 25, 82
Jason Gram (StK) 28, 154
Mark Seaby (Syd) 28, 120

Lonergan is an inside midfielder and could be a tagger. All my Essendon supporting mates are peeved that they cut him, stating that he is one of the few that could win their own ball besides Watson. To be honest haven't seen much of him but he could be the player to come in and give Sewell, Mitchell or Burgoyne a rest against clubs like his former.

Stephenson along with Seaby could be useful for that Pattison like spot on the list. We are known for our ruckmen getting injured all at the same time.

Toy looks to be the goods. Could be the perfect Sub because of his heart troubles. Not a lot of risk taking a gamble considering he was a top 3 prospect and we can get him for nothing.

Campbell would be okay, covering a position we don't have a lot of depth in.

The best looks to be Gram, but he has his troubles. He could be worth the risk though.

His a bit old isn't he!!!HeHe!!!!
Hey grizzlym, i've been meaning to ask you whats up with your Avatar, what is that thing???
I Got to admit i loved the old one better!!!
