Or well their are still hidden gems out there in those late picks, after all Matt Suckling was a 60+ pick and wasn't Brian Lake a pick up in the 70+in the 2001 draft, And don't forget Sewel and Mitchell they were rookie Draft picks that we nearly lost to Carlton and other teams as we thought they were to slow for AFL standard!!!!!
Is this the game true or false?

As it currently stands we have picks 28, 65, 66 and 84. If they want more picks will have to trade Gilham or delist someone. If they delist someone they will only free up pick 84 and Schneider would go at 102 instead so that may well have saved a couple of fringe players unless the Hawks rate the depth of this draft.

Hawthorn are quiet on this so I suspect they are still looking at moving him on despite him having value as a depth player. He would also be looking for better opportunities as you don't want to be a depth player at Box Hill when you are 29-30. Also think they will still delist one more player (Grimley most likely as there are too many rucks and redrafted as a rookie if no one takes him) and utilise pick 84.

With Gilham being off contract he can walk into the pre-season draft for nothing if he does choose to leave. He will have to let the club know soon so they can get something for him, particularly if he wants to influence his destination.

Won't get a trade done with GWS now as their lowest pick is No.14. If he wants to go there it will be via the Pre-season draft and we get nothing.

GC wouldn't part with pick 26 so we would be looking at pick 47 from GC and maybe an exchange of picks 26 and 28. Probably unlikely.

Best bet would be Port Adelaide's pick 31 and we would still probably have to drop our 3rd pick for their 4th round (72) to sweeten it. But then again if you are happy to go to Port then you would be happy to go to any club and he might even just chance it in the draft.

None of those scenarios look all that appealing but I'm resigned to seeing him go.

Our draft position is likely to be:
28, 65, 66, 84, 102 (Schneider) and whatever we get for Gilham (anywhere from pick 31 to nothing, which is pick 120).

@StevoHeraldSun: Hawks' Mark Evans re Young: "It is like we've been pick-pocketed and somebody has put an old $2 scratchy ticket back in our pocket."

@StevoHeraldSun: Hawthorn claims it was "pick pocketed" by free agency compo on Clinton Young. Furious and looking at options .. Story on superfooty soon

Mitchell was not a rookie pick ffs he was pick 36 in 2001 draft. Don't you remember the Croad trade with Freo?

Option 1: complain loudly
Option 2: complain quietly
Option 3: don't complain

Quite sure nothing will change.

"What was overlooked was that there was a sixth band of compensation, which if you read the fine print closely, was actually no compensation at all."

AFL PR statement as they go into damage control.

Sorry but i think you are wrong.

I remember that Carlton were going to swoop him up from the box hill Hawks if we didn't elevate him from the rookie list to our senior!

We nearly lost him to the blues as his speed was always an issue!!

He was taken 36 in the 2001 draft after been over looked in the 2000 draft and spent the year at box hill.

Mitchell was never a rookie.
He won back to back Eastern Ranges B&F's in 1999 and 2000 but was overlooked by everyone so he went to Box Hill and even there they didn't rate him highly and gave him the No.58 guernsey. By the end of the year he played in Box Hill's premiership side and Hawthorn used Pick 36 that had been gained as part of the Croad/McPharlin trade to draft him.

Our rookie elevations in 2001 were Robert Campbell and Michael Osborne.

Hi TeamPlayer,welcome to Bigfooty.

You can see the entire draft for 2001 at Wikipedia:AFL Draft 2001
Wikipedia now has every single draft that ever took place going back to the VFL days.

You could be right about Carlton wanting to pick up Sam Mitchell at the time as they had pick 39, which they may have wanted to use on him. If we had him on the Rookie list, we would have used our last pick, not pick #36 to secure him.

Mitchell played for Box Hill in 2001, but wasn't in the Hawks list at the time. We did have the chance to Rookie list him the year before, meaning we could have got him for next to nothing in the 2001 National draft, but he wasn't rated very highly by recruiters until 2001, despite him being close to if not the best player in every team he played in till that stage.

Ok thanks!!

Well my point from the very beginning was that whatever happened he turned out to be a star from someone that was rejected so early in his carrier

To you remember the box hill grand final?? I do he was best on ground!!

To you remember how hard the blues tried to get him to their club before we took action???

Thanks its been a while, and yes he wasn't rated very highly by recruiters because of his speed, that i remember very clearly!!!

I imagine we will seriously look at elevating one or more rookies rather than use our late picks in the draft. Good luck for Sshneider. I remember seeing some stats from the AFL which showed the probability of picking a player who would play AFL was something like 10 per cent when you got into the fourth round. Looking at our list the only guys picked beyond 60 were Puopolo, Savage and Lowdeni. Obviously a few others were elevated from the rookie list with considerable success but anyway you want to look at it getting a decent player with late picks is a long shot.

Maybe we can get a second rounder for Steve Gilham but I suspect we may choose to trade that if it eventuates.

I am just musing on the above and do not pretend to have any idea what we have in mind other than gut feel.
I hope we can salvage some positives at the trade and draft table but we don' t seem to hold very good cards.

You'd have to think that Schneider is better than anyone they could grab at 84 or 102. They do have the option of getting someone as a delisted free agent also.

Surely they won't keep that stupidity going. It was only a marketing default option when Bailey ditched the jumper early 2011. No.1 belongs out on the park.

Bailey didn't "ditch" no 1. The club forced him to give it up as part of an idiotic marketing gimmick. I was there when they unveiled it, and during the on-stage interview with Dipper, Bailey basically admitted it was the club's idea and he had to go along with it.

Interesting to note that all players said to be leaving the club (so far), have had their player profiles deleted from the HFC website except for Boumann. Could this mean we plan to rookie him?
