A couple of players that I think would be worth us looking at as trade targets for 2011:
  • Justin Sherman [Brisbane] - dropped this week and can be inconsistent, but has good skills and would provide extra midfield depth that we need
  • Bachar Houli [Essendon] - out of favour all year (not sure why) and I think is another solid, well-skilled player who's still young and has something to offer. I reckon he's better than Petrenko for instance.
  • Robin Nahas [Richmond] - fits the bill for a good crumbing small forward (would release Jaensch up the field also) and seems to have fallen behind Nason in the pecking order for the Tigers.
  • Jacobs/Hampson/Warnock [Carlton] - this is probably contingent on what GriffIn does...if he stays with us (Plan A) we're probably sorted but if he chose to leave then a back-up ruckman to Maric has been shown to be important to our structure.

As you can see none are A-graders but they seem to fit the bill of NC/Adelaide's demonstrated trading history (fringe/role players such as Symes, Stevens who are young enough to be 100+ game players for the AFC).

Who would others like to see (apart from the usual suspects - GriffEn, Gibbs, Pavlich, etc)?

First round draft picks at as little cost as possible!!!

While we have been criticised for not trading in the past, I don't see the logic in trading for the sake of trading. If a viable option arises or a player seeks a move then trade.

I don't want to chase after list cloggers

Houli is one the conspiracy theorists have as a GC recruit, currently being punished in the VFL despite his form for telling the Bombers of his intentions. He is better than about 6 blokes currently running around in their side.

But these threads always pop up and this is probably the best list of potentials I've seen here. I don't think the crows need to do much trading, perhaps an established dominant ruckman (smiliar to M.Clarke) would take us to the next level. Sherman and Nahas would be worth looking at. I hope John Griffin decides to stay, I've been very impressed with him.

Would any of these players actually be in our best 22? Surely that's what we should be recruiting for. That's the best way to strengthen the club. I'm not sure any of these players would fit that category.

Sherman, good day - yes, bad day - sanfl struggler

Houli, depth player

Nahas, useful on his day, but can play 4 games without you noticing him at all.

Sauce, warnock, hampson... Hampson perhaps. 201cm, awesome athlete. Not a great player, but shows potential to be great. Can the crows disciplined approach to footy bring out the best in him? Unsure, but we are a better chance to do so than Carlton.

Ryan Griffin if he is still uncontracted.
Jack Redden inside midfielder.
Jordan Russel plays a similar role to Dogga (not sure what his future is) and Symes. Was home sick at one stage.
Tate Silverlock
Luke Tapscott will add to our midfield depth.
Travis Varcoe much improved player. Maybe we should offer to put his brother on the senior list to seal the deal.
Levi Greenwood hard at it utility.
Shane Edwards much improved player who could be anything in the right environment.
Ben Nason not much of him but I love the way he goes about it.

Defintely interested in Nahas, we desparately need a small, crumbing foward.

wouldnt touch any of the above players with a 10 foot pole apart from Griffen

I like the 'trade cautiously' philosophy. I reckon you're better off just developing your own list...mostly. Trade when you've got someone who wants to leave, or when someone fantastic wants to come to you. Everything else is just shifting deckchairs.

Could be a few disgruntled Footscray players, especially if they fail in finals again or worse than normal

Still short a couple of quality mids - and I mean quality. Would love to get Griffen if he were available. Cooney would be even better, but we've got no chance of grabbing him.

Again, agree completely mate.

That's kinda my stance, with the quality of player we have, and the struggle to fit them all into the side, we either trade for a player who'll demand a first 18 spot (like Griff as above), or trade for a strong, specific deficiency (which I don't think we have anymore); if neither of those are on the table, you look at picking up a depth player on the cheap.

Otherwise, stay out of it.

Well the AFC did come out earlier in the year and declare they would be very active come the trade week. I'm not sure if they have ever come out and said anything like this publically before but it's not like they are ever very active so we'll just have to wait and see. If we could land a big name midfielder it would be fantastic but I wouldn't cross my fingers.

I suspect the activity will be more trading players out rather than trading them in...they may be forced to trade, or lose players for nothing.

I'd think they know/have known that since early in the year.

I know we're probably going to free up some dollars with the older players retiring but I wonder if some of our other players have been waiting out their retirements? Being told all along 'just wait until those guys retire' so that they can finally start receiving closer to their market value.

The question is though.. what do we need to give up?

When the Crows targeted talls in 2008 draft, at the time I thought they would come in handy for the 2010 draft considering how compromised it is. Then we did it again in 2009. It wouldn't surprise me if this was a strategy all along. Talls are great trade bait for clubs that are desperate for them.

Good point. And the contracts have been 1 year reduced value, not top-ended. Not to mention only half of veterans Goody and Macca's contracts are salary capped. Of course, when you are talking Goody, Macca and Edwards, even a reduced contract would involve a fair amount of money.

Last time I read a thread like this I probably threw up names like Douglas and Griffin as trade outs :o

Now Dougy has been great and Griffin has definitely impressed me over the last month & a half. It has now gotten to the point that I hope that Griffin doesn't pack his bags at the end of the year even if he has raised his value somewhat.

As for targets I don't mind Sherman although he would probably come at to high a price.

Same for Nahas I get extremely doubtful when people float about names drafted 2 or 3 years ago as the clubs will want to hold onto them if they had any talent.

I'm not that sure we need to be that active in our trading unless someone wants out (eg Griffin/Thompson). We Have some great talent coming through now and with the players we have got retiring I am confident in our side going into next year.

We could have a side which looks like this

FB: Johncock Rutten Davis

HB: Otten Bock Symes

C: Mackay Danger van Berlo

HF: Knights Walker Douglas

FF: Porps Tippett Hendo

RR: Maric Vince Thompson

Int: Reilly Armstrong Sloane Griffin

Then consider those missing out Doughty (admit if he plays on likely to be in first 22), Stevens (Same as Doughty), Petrenko, Martin, Sellar, Jaensch Smack & Talia should all be pushing for spots by then. This team is purely subjective and the true lineup would differ from the above but it highlights the depth we should have next year. So I don't think we should be chasing borderline 22 players from other sides because they will probably struggle to make our best 22 in the future.

Now if a game breaker came available like a Griffen then sure throw the kitchen sink at him but I don't think that's very likely this year. If players are leaving they are going to the GC.
