Good to see the Eagles supporting our youth in resigning Chambers, Munro, Jones, Williams and Haynes. As far as I am concerned you cannot just pluck champions from other teams by waving the folding stuff around. Otherwise you get the annual run around like Freo (Seems Gaspar is set to stay with Richmond. Did he ever intend to leave?)

Further news I have heard in the last few days on TV, print and radio:

- Wooden, Cummings, Wilson and Matera have not yet signed new contracts. I do not know if they have even been offered one.

- Talk of Fevola and Bandy being targeted by the Eagles. They could do worse. As long as we dont give away to much for them. Certainly not our 3rd and 6th picks in the draft. Fevola is a strange one though. Where does that leave Buszan, Wilson and Cummings. Trade bait I guess.

I look forward to all the trade news in the next week or so.

Finally, I heard on the radio that there is a rumour the Coach will be announced on 15/10/01. That seems a long way away considering trading and the draft planning. Then again I guess that they have someone in mind and might be just negotiaiting the contract terms.

GO EAGLES!

P.S. I have developed a bit of sympathy for the Dockers. Seems everyone is jumping ship and I doubt they will get any prize recruits. If they get Farmer he will not win them anymore games but will I suppose help retain some members.

After bagging the AFL Board there was one post that caught my eye. This chap "Tubby" seemed to talk sense. He suggested that the Eagles are interested in the following - Barnard, Rioli, Lockyer, Croad and McKernan. Although IMO none I would trade for the first round pick. The best would be Croad who I would offer Morrison or Braun plus the second round pick.

Barnard is a pinch hitter.
Rioli just doesnt do it often enough.
McKernan is now a hack.
Lockyer is no better value in our backline than say Prior, Read or Wirra.

I wouldnt mind any of those players but dont give the Earth for them.

GO EAGLES!

These are the rumours i heard:

Tarrant (From some people on Bigfooty who claim to have "connections")
McKernan (Walls suggested that one)
Rioli (lots of sources on this one)
Croad (rumours emerging in last few days)
Lockyer (came out about same time as the Tarrant rumour)
Bandy (Also a new rumour, heard it first on Bigfooty)
Carr (same as bandy)

Thats all the rumours i have heard about, i also heard some rumours on other players, but i think those may have been wishful thinking by people. Only one's i believe are the Bandy and Tarrant rumours, with the Rioli rumour also becoming a reality now that Long might be retiring.

Why Fevola??? I dont want him and i dont want Bandy either, in fact of all the rumors going around, none of them sound that good.

The only guy i would like at the club in all the rumors is Croad and Gaspar but i doubt either will move.

So you wouldn't want Tarrant? I think he would be an ideal solution to our half-forward problem. I would love to see Williams, Embley and Tarrant on our half-forward line......though Croad would do just fine

I rate Croad, but think we'd have to give too much to get him. Can't see the Hawks letting him go easily.

Yeah sorry forgot about Tarrant. I would welcome Tarrant with open arms but not for the price we would have to pay. Knowing Collingwood they would want Cousins, Morrison, Braun, Gardiner, Wirrpunda, Jones, Jakovich and our number 6 pick :D

Jones, Williams, and Haynes I am very pleased about. Excellent young prospects. Munro hasn't had much of a chance to show his stuff, so this is quite a vote of confidence in him. Chambers I seem to recall we were all divided on the future of after round 22. Looks like he's staying :)

Question: who made these decisions...Rob Wiley with advisors? Why is the playing list being finalised without a coach, who will inevitably have his own opinions on who stays and who goes?

I was going to make that exact point.

If the coach has to accept most of the 'blame' for team performances, perhaps he should have a say in the team.
This is one reason that I was surprised when Freo told Fletcher he was no longer required - prior to the coach being appointed.

As a player, I'd be extremely interested in knowing who was going to coach the club before making decisions on my own future.

I would rather see Merenda , Sierakowski, Haynes with optionally Williams, Embley, Gaspar, Jako ot Gardiner whilst Cox is in the ruck or Buszan if Bowling Ball is at FF just like at E Perth.......Oh..and what about McDougall???

Seriously though, I don't think we need any more half forwards. Look at Brisbane and their midfield. Voss, Hart, Black, Lappin, Akermanis. Now Cuz, Banners and Kerr are good but then we fall away in class. Jones is a good agger but you rarely need two on the ball. So I still feel that we need another class midfielder to replace Kempy. I also think we need a good tall defender that can play on LLoyd, Richardson etc,. I hope that Glass, Gaspar and Carrol are the goods of the future but I'd like some insurance.

I really really hope that the coach is being consulted on this stuff -whether he has been formally anointed or not.

As I said elsewhere, just because someone has recently been given a new contract is irrelevant to trading - in fact they have to be under contract to be traded. Scotty signed with Port one week before leaving to join us. Which is not to say we should be trading all these players, but one of them (say Chambers) could still be traded if someone came up with a decent trade offer.

As I have been banging on about for a while, we need midfielders. Desperately. The GF was a perfect example of how footy is played now - with Brisbane just overrunning (literally) Essendon in the second half. I'd rather we grew our own, but the odd "in and under" player would be great. Trouble is - they don't grow on trees. The only star out of contract one (and in this case it's good if they're out of contract because they can threaten to leave so you get a better price as the buying club) is Scott West, who I read is suffering from depression.

Scott is under contract 'til the end of 2004 - signed at the end of last season. But as you correctly pointed out, contracts (and loyalty) are irrelevant when it comes to trading.

I'm confident that he'll stay though.

Someone on the WCE Forum (WCE Website) has said the Eagles have traded Morrison for Betheras, Ukovic and Lane.

On the surface I do not see any value here. None are regulars in an ordinary team. All will be at their third Club!!!!

Lane - 25, 179cm, 84kg, 59 games. Ex Bulldogs
Betheras - 26, 183cm, 81kg, 52 games Ex Freo Rookie
Ukovic - 23, 183cm, 81kg, 35 games Ex Essendon

I am not sure if the number of games is prior to 2001 but you get the idea.

If we fill our list with rejects then the young kids wont get a game and hence develop.

Though we do need more skilful running players.

Not convinced this is a good trade at all.

But after saying that I read so much rubbish on the Net it is difficult to work out whats true and what is not.

GO EAGLES!

I wouldnt mind Tarrant, but we would have to pay to much.

I reckon Croad is better and more versatile and we'd probably have to give up less. Morrison and Round 2 pick, maybe another fringe player i'd be willing to give up for him. But i dont think he will come.

AND I DO NOT WANT COREY MCKERNAN AT THE CLUB. If Robert Walls is serious than ill go hang myself. What our club sees in McKernan is beyond me

Hmm, where to start...

I'm glad that the club has resigned a lot of our youngsters, Munro and Chambers are on thin ice though. Hopefully they'll pull through.

Trading, I don't think we will play a big part or at least we don't intend to. The club needs to develop our youngsters and not just go for quick fix solutions. I'm not really interested in any of the REALISTIC tradees that are circulating. Croad and Tarrant won't be traded so there's no real targets.

Will say more later...

I think we need to develop our youth and the resigning of the four young blokes was a smart move, though I do agree with Visro on Munroe and Chambers.

I hope we are smart in the draft and go for the rookies rather than Mckernan and Co....its the best way to develop a premiership team....

There should be no quick fixes or gap fillers......and we all should be patient on the new coach too and give him a few years to work with these players and the game plans.....

I know KJ went early, but I think it was a personality thing rather than anything else.....seeing a thread somewhere else at Big Footy, some Hawk fan was commenting on KJ being an assistant coach at Hawthorn again, and he said KJ was not liked by the Hawks players.......

food for thought.....

We did the gap fillers and quick fixes last year and i thought it turned out really well with Collica starring down back, Merenda lively on half forward and wasnt plagued with injuries. Carroll was also encouraging as the season went on. Taylor was a servicable midfielder.

So now this year it is time to focus on the rookies. Lets get some youngsters and start giving them more games. I expect come round 1 next year for Humm, Green, Haynes, McDougall all to be in the 22. Its time to start getting a group of young guys and playing them together so they can develop together. Retrace our steps and do exactly what we did a decade ago. Whoosha, Jako, Bluey, Lewis, Mainy, Tommy, Milli, all young up and comers that turned into legends and brought us glory twice. Lets do it again but with Cuz, Gardy, Wirr, Jones, and the youngsters who dont even have nicknames yet.

Don't forget that we have the third pick in the preseason draft so that might influence some trades. McKernan I don't really want. Croad and Tarrant I would happily accept and Lockyer I would be happy to receive at a decent price. I don't really want us to trade hard, it will be interesting to see if we trade at all!

Just read on the AFL website that Port want high draft picks so they can use them to bring Croad to Port to cover for the loss of Paxman i think who went down with a knee recon. They say Jarrod Schofield wants to return to Perth..........What the???

He better be a sweetener with Treadrea in the deal!!! A 3 or 6 pick for Schofield ...i think not. Maybe there talking about a second round pick but still im not interested, would rather take a punt on a youngster than bring back Schofield who never really got a game with us anyway.

Also read that Misiti looks to get the sqeeze from Essendon.....and that Barnard is linked to WC. Essendon need to offload some quality players to fit under the cap. No mention of Misiti heading west though.

Misiti and Schofield aren't good enough. I'd rather develop some rookies rather than draft a so-so midfielder.

Richard Taylor - serviceable? We got flogged in the midfield every week - and that midfield included Cousins!

Taylor is all chump.

Schofield is 26 and posted 8 Brownlow votes to be equal fourth with Tredrea on the Port list.

Year Team Games Kicks Marks H'bls Goals B'low Vs
1998 W. Coast 14 103 33 52 5 6
1999 Port Adel. 21 208 68 96 19 7
2000 Port Adel. 18 153 40 76 17 0
2001 Port Adel. 24 312 92 145 16 8

467 possessions in a season would certainly help Cuz.

I agree with Bunsen about Taylor. He has looked useful at times but hasn't really contributed to the midfield.
