I was told training is tomorrow. Does anybody know what time?

Hoping to get down while im on Uni holidays :D

I made the track down to AAMI today to have a look at training. Lots of people were there because there was some junior football carnival on Max Basheer Reserve.

Everyone on the list including rookies were out there today with three exceptions, Aaron Kite, Brian Donnelly and Jason Porplyzia. I’m starting to get concerned with where Kite is at, he’s playing in the reserves for Norwood and he’s not training with the Crows, concerning signs. Not sure what was the go with Porps, I heard someone say he was doing light duties, obviously indoors because I didn’t see him. Not sure what the go with McKernan is, he worked away from the main group and just took shots on goal. That’s all he seems to do at training…

Jarrhan Jacky was in the green top, trainer of the week I believe? Good to see. And what was also good to see what his absolutely brilliant hands, he marks everything above his head. He's got hands similar to Porplyzia out on the lead, they are that strong. His kicking for goal leaves a bit to be desired but with hands that good he'll be a handy player.

Walker enjoys his footy so much, you can tell just watching him out there. In the full ground drill where it was orange v blue he took some really strong grabs. And his kicking, from any position of the ground, is just all magnificent Phil Davis impressed me as he perfected a few spoils and even Will Young looked quite good. He lets his opponent get away on the lit a bit too often but when it’s a 1-on-1 contest he is really impressive and he’s real strong. David Mackay was all class in this drill; he had possession just back of centre near he boundary line and was being corralled by his opponent. He evaluated his options and drilled a beautiful long pass to Griffin. He continued to run and got on the end of a pass and booted a goal from about 40 out. Brodie Martin looked more than hand, Sellar was stationed as a defender but his kicking was a bit dicey.

Brett Burton looks to have upped the anti a bit on his comeback trail. He worked with Rory Sloane who has a knee brace and James Moss who is recovering from hip surgery. I love Mossy, what a superstar.

Ricky Henderson, I’m temped to make a thread. The guy oozes class and will play a LOT of AFL footy. I don’t know who my favourite rookie is out of Moss and Henderson, both are pretty good talents. At 190cm he has terrific size for someone who will eventually be a midfielder. He is extremely athletic, has a great vertical leap and his skills are surprisingly good. I didn’t see him miss a target all day in all situations. I know he’s played a bit of footy before but he is a project player and with these types normally their skills are a bit ordinary. Not the case with Henderson. He is a Pendelbery clone, trust me, he’ll be upgraded at some stage and go on to have a fine AFL career. With such an emphasis on athleticism these days he’s a good shot to make it because he moves superbly. I’m excited! :thumbsu:

Andrew McLeod is a legend and not that it needs to be said but he’s just got such great leadership qualities and is a great guy for the youngsters to look up to. At the end of the session things got pretty hilarious. Petrenko started out by himself having shots on goal from a tight angle, where the players race is. He was later joined by McLeod, Armstrong, Jacky and others who came and went. Petrenko had shot after shot after shot and had no joy. He tried just about everything and couldn’t manage a goal. He kicked quite a few absolute shockers and his mates had a good laugh at his expense. A few came close, a few were miles off. He then got a bit desperate as he lined up from about 40 out. He took a few steps, then took a few more, a few more and eventually he found himself about 20 out. He still missed, to more laughter. :D It was pretty funny stuff. It must be said the breeze was pretty tough for kicking in that pocket. Sellar came and had 2 shots, one was close but the breeze took a hold of it and the other was one of the worst kicks I’ve seen and yet it went through, he raised his hands in the air. Dangerfield had a few shots and was probably the best of the lot. What was evident is just how well the players get on and how young our squad is, there’s youngsters everywhere!

Can’t think of anyone else at the moment; let me know if you have any questions on particular players or any drills. Pictures to come later. :)

I have to get some work done so I could only briefly glance over your report Drumm but ta for it, and seriously how exciting is Henderson? I remember watching him a couple of times before he got injured and he seriously does not look like a player four years out of the game. He's got athleticism to burn and nice skills. Hopefully next year he'll get a chance on the senior list.

:thumbsu: Thanks for the report! :thumbsu:

Genuine excitement from you there Drum - you've turned into Mr Positivity mate ;)

I remember being there in person a few months back when a mate of Drummond's said he was more positive this preseason and he called back "I'm a changed man!" with a big smirk on his face. I had to grin :D

Anything on Bock? Did he look relaxed? etc etc
Yeah Bock looked fine, was involved in all the drills and looked to be in good spirits.

I've just emembered Scott Stevens wasn't out there. Hopefully he'll just do a bit on Friday and pass any test he has to complete. Gill wasn't out there either, to be expected.

Just to clarify the situation with some players ... Kite, Donnelly and McKernan are all training with their SANFL clubs at the moment. A couple of others (Henderson, Young) have recently been through the same process to help them settle in with their SANFL club. They are still with us during the week but do the main training sessions with the SANFL team. Obviously Kite is a bit different to the rest, having played last year, but I presume it's to give him the best chance to get back in the Norwood league team.

Ill add to what Drum has said and probably reiterate some points,f or those who are interested.

As most are aware, the Crow who has shown exceptional training/football ability the prior week gets to wear the Green jumper. This weeks Green jumper holder is.... Jarrhan Jacky.

The main group performed basic warm up drills, followed by approximately a 25m Sprint along the boundary, in pairs.

Other activities included 30-40 meter kick-to-kick and general ball movement drills from defence to attack.

On activity that I particularly liked was a handball drill, 5 vs. 5. Played in a share shaped field, with 4 sets of cones/markers on each corner you needed to handball your way through a zone, and reach your goals at the other side. This was an impressive exercise that demonstrated that’s the crows are effectively practicing to run through the ever increasing zones.

S-Mac trained alone kicking at goals from around 40-50 meters with relative success; also it was good to see the Crows perform goal kicking practice as part of this session. This was an area that I thought we lacked during Pre-Season and has been a contentious issue in football during the past few weeks. However I am continually frustrated by the lack of 1-on-1 coaching when it comes to taking a shot at goal. Coming from a soccer background I was shown how to kick the ball and learnt the mechanics effectively, however it appears football clubs are to stubborn to hire a professional to work and refine this important facet of our game. Yelling and trying to put a player off his kick is not educational.

Look at Golf who have swing analyzers or American Football and or Rugby, all have specialist kicking coaches that highlight your problem and then fix it!

Ok well ill stop rambling now. Nathan Bock also trained well, however im unsure whether he will play this week. I did not see Scott Stevens at training, so im unaware of his current status. Also i thought i saw Porps at training today.

Ok that’s about it, training lasted the best part of 1 and a half. All the major news Media were in attendance, Shuts, Soda, Capel and Rowe, so im sure plenty of reports will come your way shortly

Thanks for the report Drum, great to see that getting out of bed early is clearly not an issue for you any more :D

Gee Ricky Henderson sounds exciting! I'll have to catch him in the SANFL sometime soon, he sounds like he has a lot of promise.

God knows why the gif program I used put him on speed, but I like it!

I could shut him down, speed or no speed ;) haha.

Basketballers are the new black, and for very very good reason.

Lateral quickness, good hands and very good awarenss in close.

They are defensive nightmares on the footy field. They understand ALL elements of zone defense (most basketballers will play this from 10) and never let their man get goal (basket) side. Great verticals with their good hands make them good pack marks as well.

Obviously you need a footy IQ and footskills to go with, and if you get it. BINGO, you have Scott Pendlebury.

Geez Drum, wanna take any more photos of Ricky? :p

Not that I'm complaining!

Sellar's changed a lot since he first arrived at the Club, he's got quite a pair of shoulders on him.

Thanks for the pics :thumbsu::thumbsu:
