Got to the ground at about 7:50am this morning. The ground had already been set up with witches hats and the like, and Lachie Henderson was the only player out on the ground. He was doing some close in ball skills with one of the fitness guys, primarlily using the "up standing trampoline" to throw the ball into. He went back down the race just before 8:00am, and then the entire list, minus Eddie Betts, hit the track. No idea why Betts wasn't there.

The group then split into two groups, with the rehab group staying close to the race, whilst the rest of the group did a half lap and did some warm up exercises in front of the Gardiner Stand, before running another half lap, and completed their warm up in front of the small scoreboard at the Legends Stand End.

Back onto the rehab group for a sec. There were a few players in there, namely, Waite, Labi, Henderson, Robinson, Thornton, Wiggins, Warnock, Armfield, Jamison, Austin, Kreuzer, Joseph and O'Keefe. All of these guys trained away from the main group, doing mainly ball work, and running laps. Waite also used the scooter a fair bit throughout the session.

Back onto the main group, and once the warm ups were completed, the group ran, walked and stretched in a straight line, two players at a time and between cone markers for about 50-60 metres. They even walked and ran backwards at one stage. This went on for about 10 minutes, and once this was completed, the footballs came out.

The first drill was a handball drill, two on three, with the two being defenders, and other three trying to keep the one footy off them. This was a little different to skills I have seen before, as they had 4 free standing "gates" that the players with the footy had to run through. the "gates" looked like microphone stands, which stood about 3 feet high.

The next drill, which the players did for some time was to break into about 4 groups of 8 players. Two groups headed for the Hero's Stand Wing, and the other two groups completed the drill up The Pratt Stand wing. Basically, it was two teams (Blue and Yellow) had to control the footy with precise kicking skills, and they must hit their team-mate on the chest. No mark, meant the ball was turned over. The was completed over about 60m, and the assistant coach who was taking the drill (Monty & Lappin) would call out how many more passes were required before the player with the ball could have a shot at goal - well, through the witches hats at least. This drill went for quite a while, and i'm pleased to say that the skills on display were very good.

Once this was completed, the guys headed for a drink. This is worth noting, and usually you see the trainers out there with the players giving them water bottles every other minute, but today the bottles were left in an esky, and the players had to get their drinks themselves.

They then, headed as a group, over the the Hero's Stand Wing, and broke into three groups - Blue, Yellow & Skins. Girls, you would have loved it. This was just the handball drill, where the group with the ball had to keep it off the other group, and take the ball through the witches hats, which were about 50m apart.

Again after this, the group as a whole split into 4 groups, with some doing stationary kick to kick, whilst others did some fairly standard handballing skills. This only went for about 20 minutes, and then the players did 3 "warm down" laps, and headed inside about 10:15am. All in all, a very high tempo session, with our skills really very good this early into the preseason.

Whilst I thought the group trained very well as a whole, thought I would mention a few players who I thought did very well.

Brock McLean - Obviously keen to impress, but his kicking skills were very very sharp. Looks like he has been at the club for ages, and was even talking to a couple of the younger guys in Garlett & Browne

Lachie Henderson - Even though he was in the rehab group, he was the first player out onto the track, and one of the last one's to leave.

David Ellard - Looked sharp like Brock, but what impressed me with him was that with the run throughs early in the session, and then the warm down laps, he was out in front. Obviously done some serious work in his time off, and if his training is anything to go by, might just get a taste of senior action in 2010.

Maguire not in the rehab group?

Great work, HBF! Much appreciated. Usually this time of year reporters are hanging their heads in despair at the woeful skills on display. This is definitely a major step up. Maybe Juddy really has shamed them into working harder. :thumbsu:

ok, who are you and what have you done with HBF???

:p

nice detaield report :thumbsu:

Was Yarran training, or has he walked out on the club again

How did he look?

Aaron Kite??

Thanks heaps HBF. It's greatly appreciated. Few questions - as mentioned, any review of Maguire and Kite? Any blokes who have really bulked up (noticed in a CFC TV video, Bower looked nice and built)? How did Labi look? And finally, any pics?

Thanks again mate, great work.

You rock. great stuff. Thanks from the bottom of my giblets.

Care to comment on Tuohy's skills?

Care to explain why you didnt provided the drinks for the players then:)?

Great work HBF, it's pleasing to see the guys we're bringing into the club like Henderson and McLean are such hard workers and good role models.

Spot on like when you are trying not to drip paint on the floor. :thumbsu:

Does anyone have pics of our CHB for next year in Paul Bower?
People have been saying he looks much bigger and stronger already as he gets a full PS behind him.:footy::cool:

Have you seen the video posted in the Paul Bower roster watch thread? only about 5-10 seconds of Bower, but you can notice that he seems to have beefed up quite a bit.

Thanks for the report HBF, Great to hear about our new blue boys and the effort they are throwing into 2010.. All this talk about Bower beefing up sounds good, can't wait to see him go again..

Big appetite, our Emu.

A few more snippets from a 'seasoned' track watcher on TC :)

Garlett looked in scintillating form, twice leaving Juddy in his wake at some stoppages. Brock looks a slab of well chiseled beef. He has a spring in step and was full zip.

:):thumbsu:

Zac is one powerful looking unit. He will knock plenty over once he gets up to speed. Talking of speed.....he's bloody fast. In a later round of '6 vs 6 keepings off' handball drill he did exceptionally well, continually powering through congestion to link up.

:thumbsu:

Mcguire looks in good physical shape. Clean hands and neat kicking. He did about the 1st 80 minutes then ran 150s for about 20 minutes.

:mad::mad:

Garlett you ripper!

The only worry I have about Maguire is his pace and ability to keep up with modern day football. If he can manage that I'm all for him. As it is I think it's a risk worth taking. Risking very little which could result in a very large gain.

Maguire not in the rehab group?

No he wasn't. He did everything with the main group. Looked pretty good if you ask me. He did stand out, only because he was one of the few players that wore the white singlets, rather than the Navy Blue training jumper.

Yarran looked pretty good mate. Didn't stand out, but when he got the ball, it certainly went where he intended it to go. He did alot of work on The Heroes Stand wing, which was a bit harder for me to see over there.

Kite was ok. Did all the things you would expect of someone who has been in the AFL system now for a couple of years.

.
great news
his kicking will be very valuable,a s will his leadership

Come on, who's up for it? I'd go but I have to sleep in. :o
I'd love too, but all my spare time is spent on video analysis.

If they would be so considerate as to time a session for Sunday arvo around 2pm, babybear (the elder) and I are off to the Zoo so wouldn't be hard to pop in.

Having said that, when he "plays footy" at home (read - picks up footy and throws it at me) he still says I'm Juddy (due to my good looks and great footskills of course) and he's Fev. :(

I tried to get him onto Kreuzer or Gibbsy or Murph.........but the only two players he really knows are Juddy and Fev.:(

Training might be a bit too traumatic.

Thanks for the report HBF.:thumbsu:

Hopefully the rehab group diminishes in number significantly over the net few weeks as guys fully recover from their end of season ops.:thumbsu:
