Got to the ground at about 7:50am this morning. The ground had already been set up with witches hats and the like, and Lachie Henderson was the only player out on the ground. He was doing some close in ball skills with one of the fitness guys, primarlily using the "up standing trampoline" to throw the ball into. He went back down the race just before 8:00am, and then the entire list, minus Eddie Betts, hit the track. No idea why Betts wasn't there.
The group then split into two groups, with the rehab group staying close to the race, whilst the rest of the group did a half lap and did some warm up exercises in front of the Gardiner Stand, before running another half lap, and completed their warm up in front of the small scoreboard at the Legends Stand End.
Back onto the rehab group for a sec. There were a few players in there, namely, Waite, Labi, Henderson, Robinson, Thornton, Wiggins, Warnock, Armfield, Jamison, Austin, Kreuzer, Joseph and O'Keefe. All of these guys trained away from the main group, doing mainly ball work, and running laps. Waite also used the scooter a fair bit throughout the session.
Back onto the main group, and once the warm ups were completed, the group ran, walked and stretched in a straight line, two players at a time and between cone markers for about 50-60 metres. They even walked and ran backwards at one stage. This went on for about 10 minutes, and once this was completed, the footballs came out.
The first drill was a handball drill, two on three, with the two being defenders, and other three trying to keep the one footy off them. This was a little different to skills I have seen before, as they had 4 free standing "gates" that the players with the footy had to run through. the "gates" looked like microphone stands, which stood about 3 feet high.
The next drill, which the players did for some time was to break into about 4 groups of 8 players. Two groups headed for the Hero's Stand Wing, and the other two groups completed the drill up The Pratt Stand wing. Basically, it was two teams (Blue and Yellow) had to control the footy with precise kicking skills, and they must hit their team-mate on the chest. No mark, meant the ball was turned over. The was completed over about 60m, and the assistant coach who was taking the drill (Monty & Lappin) would call out how many more passes were required before the player with the ball could have a shot at goal - well, through the witches hats at least. This drill went for quite a while, and i'm pleased to say that the skills on display were very good.
Once this was completed, the guys headed for a drink. This is worth noting, and usually you see the trainers out there with the players giving them water bottles every other minute, but today the bottles were left in an esky, and the players had to get their drinks themselves.
They then, headed as a group, over the the Hero's Stand Wing, and broke into three groups - Blue, Yellow & Skins. Girls, you would have loved it. This was just the handball drill, where the group with the ball had to keep it off the other group, and take the ball through the witches hats, which were about 50m apart.
Again after this, the group as a whole split into 4 groups, with some doing stationary kick to kick, whilst others did some fairly standard handballing skills. This only went for about 20 minutes, and then the players did 3 "warm down" laps, and headed inside about 10:15am. All in all, a very high tempo session, with our skills really very good this early into the preseason.
Whilst I thought the group trained very well as a whole, thought I would mention a few players who I thought did very well.
Brock McLean - Obviously keen to impress, but his kicking skills were very very sharp. Looks like he has been at the club for ages, and was even talking to a couple of the younger guys in Garlett & Browne
Lachie Henderson - Even though he was in the rehab group, he was the first player out onto the track, and one of the last one's to leave.
David Ellard - Looked sharp like Brock, but what impressed me with him was that with the run throughs early in the session, and then the warm down laps, he was out in front. Obviously done some serious work in his time off, and if his training is anything to go by, might just get a taste of senior action in 2010.
