Has anyone actually been to training to see how our blokes are performing?

I heard yesterday Carey is in terrific condition, very sound & as keen as mustard......& that was from someone close to the Club....

Is Hudson really struggling as reported?
you'd think Jars would have made a few discreet enquiries before he picked him wouldn't you......that provides some confidence that he's rated him!

I've also heard Darren Jarman say Jericho has been very impressive........

Has anyone else heard anything else?

We need regular training reports on this board however insignificant.........

Anyone who saw Luke Jericho play in the Under 19 Prelim Final would be looking forward to big things a bit later.

Over 40 possessions and absolutely dominated. So much so, they just changed the rules to stop AFL listed players dropping back to junior grades for finals.

I think macca23 is having a break around this time every year so expect a couple of well detailed training reports.:D

I did a couple last year but the project I am working on at the moment requires me to travel between Adelaide and Port Lincon on a regular basis. All that travel leaves me buggered:(

Started leave on Friday night after a heavy session at the Hilton, Stiffy.

Yep. I'm off to the 12th January, so I'll be going with my good mate to the sessions after the boys come back after the Xmas - New Year break.

Should see at least a couple, and I'll put a report on here of those I get to.

I hope to see some of those skinny ones with a bit more muscle on 'em. :D

That is a must especially for Bock & Hentschel.

Also a little of the quickness of the mark for Ben Rutten would not go astray.

Looking forward to your reports macca & anyone else for that matter who can get down to training.

I went to training this morning, and I must say that all of the boys looked very very good. The only players that weren't there were Mark Stevens and Nigel Smart (I couldn't see a bald head, so I'm sure he wasn't there ... unless he was wearing a cap :p). Although Jacob Schuback left a little bit earlier

Stevens is doing a modified program (bike riding etc) at the moment to prevent any further damage to his troublesome knee.

Smarty wore a cap in all of last year's pre-season training - including scratch matches - to protect that chrome dome of his.

Can anyone advise when training resumes after xmas, dates and location?

On the Crows website, it's got the training times, and it says that the 5th of January is when the boys return from their Christmas break. All of the training times that are mentioned (5th to the 7th) are at Max Basheer Reserve and start at 9 am.

Thanks for that

Crows wary
By ZAC MILBANK

THE TWELVE days of Christmas will not be a festive picnic for the Adelaide Crows.

After completing their final training session yesterday morning, they were sent on their break with a clear warning.
"The message came from both myself and Gary (Ayres)," Adelaide fitness coach Stephen Schwerdt said yesterday.

"The reality is from a conditioning point of view you can do a fair bit of damage in 12 days unless you look after yourself.

"We don't expect them to belt themselves over the break but they still need to be thinking of maintaining their condition." Returning promising results to date also gives the squad plenty of incentive not to harm its preparation before the round one Wizard Cup match against St Kilda on February 22.

"The coaching staff don't want to spend two or three weeks when they (players) come back re-conditioning guys again," Schwerdt said.

"Football becomes No. 1 priority on January 5 so we can't really afford to spend two weeks on conditioning, we want to concentrate on football more than anything."

And one big name in particular is leading from the front to ensure Crows fans have something to look forward to in 2004.

"Wayne (Carey) hasn't missed a beat, he has been sensational actually," Schwerdt said of the seven-time All-Australian forward.

"I couldn't ask any more from him, he's in good nick and he's been a good example for all the guys with how he's gone about it.

"We encouraged him to do a lot more speed work and agility so when he came to start training he could slip straight into a football session and that's what he's done.

"He's far more advanced than he was at the same time last year."

Carey's bold display has sparked young guns Brent Reilly and Jacob Schuback into establishing themselves as regular contributors. Both drafted in 2001, the two Victorians are keen to prove they are physically capable of joining Adelaide's midfield rotation.

"They've indicated that through the way they have prepared themselves," Schwerdt said.

"Over the off-season is where they need to make their improvement otherwise they're just improving along with everyone else at the same rate.

"They have made some really good gains during the off-season and it's held them in good stead for the pre-season."

One notable absentee from the final session was veteran Nigel Smart who is suffering from an achilles complaint.

"He's probably taken it a bit too far," Schwerdt said of Smart's eagerness

The King may still be crowing, with throne intact
December 24, 2003

The performance of Wayne Carey on the training track is exciting Crows' staff and supporters alike.

Many proclaim the King of the AFL dead, believing a season-long footballing funeral awaits Wayne Carey next year.

He cannot jump, cannot mark above his head, turns like a steamship - and that was last season.

Surely, when he turns 33 in 2004, the most dominant player of the 1990s will succumb to the athletic upstarts of the new millennium?

Keen watchers of Carey during Adelaide's punishing pre-season sessions think otherwise.

"He's been sensational," Crows fitness coach Stephen Schwerdt said yesterday.

"He's far more advanced than he was at the same time last year."

One year ago, the former Kangaroos captain was reintroducing his body to the rigours of football after sitting out the 2002 season in disgrace when his affair with the wife of teammate Anthony Stevens became known.

After Carey was lured by Adelaide for 2003, his output was affected by soft tissue and knee injuries, leading some pundits to declare him a shadow of his former self.

You could see thoughts race through Carey's football brain, only for his body to respond in a plod. With strapped shoulders and heavy legs, he averaged fewer than four marks a game and returned 29 goals in 16 matches - paltry figures by his peerless standards.

But Schwerdt argues that fans will see a different Carey in 2004, one whose body is accustomed to the demands of the AFL. "He's not getting any younger so he's not going to get back to his best from a physical point of view," Schwerdt said.

"It's funny, because this time last year everyone was asking about him and wanting to know what was going on.

"But (this pre-season) he's just slipped through and done his business and has been very professional in the way he has gone about everything. We couldn't ask for any more; he's in good nick and he's been a good example for the guys in how he has gone about it."

Schwerdt and Carey, whose contract with Adelaide runs out at the end of 2004, have discussed how to avoid the niggling soft-tissue injuries that frustrated him this year.

"This time around, we are aware of that, so we encourage him and plan to do a lot more speed work, more agility and work with the footy," said Schwerdt, an inaugural Crow who played 25 games for the team.
