Was in town and at a function at Subi this afternoon and got to see a bit of the boys training. Didn't get to see much but from the little I saw

  • Masten's footskills were sublime in a full ground drill. Absolute first rate. In the same drill Kerry looked really fit. Moved beautifully
  • Hunter was moving quite well and hand arms overhead for marking contests.
  • NickNat was in a 1 on 1 marking exercise from high balls with various forwards - had extremely good hands, although not as good as JK
  • Cox, McKinley and Priddis were just jogging laps

If I remember any more I'll add it

There is a report on EFH that says Masten was missing targets all night?

Thanks for posting anyway, Larri. (Dont mean to sound ungrateful!:D)

I'd suggest someone has an agenda

Cheers for the write-up. :D

I dont see how two people can have such different views on how Masten kicked. Either one paid more attention or the other just looked at the wrong times?

Masten's skills certainly were not sublime tonight, I witnessed a few shockers from him in the full field exercise.

Was happy to see a couple of good training drills tonight, focusing on decision making and teamwork under pressure. These exercises no doubt will help fine tune short passes through the corridor. I really liked the 6 on 6 exercise and should be regularly featured at training.

I think Ash Smith has been earmarked as another kick in specialist and his foot skills looked good from the square.

NicNat used his height and body to great advantage in taking some nice marks tonight.

Thanks Larri and Prankster.

Can't wait for Naita to realise he's 6'8" or whatever he is and really go after the ball in the air. Meanwhile, I love his game of sheep herding just as much!

Like I said mate, didn't see the whole session, but what I saw was exeptional.

Three long, low kicks, two hit a target on the move, and the other was on goal. Looked easily the best kicking style in the team - it just looks natural.

Saw a bit of the early kick to kick and his short kicking was a bit suspect though.

You do know Masten is No 13 right? Just jokes...

I've noticed when he has time to straighten and kick he is generally okay but under pressure he sprays it alot, not what I would call natural and IMO he really needs to work on his foot skills of he wants to become a quality player.

I love the way Swift goes about it, the kind of guy who I would imagine puts in extra time away from the training track to work on his game. His foot skills seem to be improving since the earlier training sessions. Even in the basic kick to kick, he always practices turning in an arc and delivering a quick pass as if in game conditions.

His foot skills (Swift) in drills weren't great IMO.

I'm suspecting you have harsh expectations on Masten Prank - not a fan?

I love Mastens kicks, has a high hurt factor but it also has a high shank rate. Some of his kicking convinced me that once he finds his place in the midfield and gets the ball in clean air he will have a huge hurt factor in spotting up targets.

Swift struggles to kick well while running down the lines but is a awsome place kick,he has a lazy ball drop and is often overkicks the ball. His kicking is not bad, often it's totally awsome and has good hurt factor. His kicking is better when his wheeling around in traffic, one of the reasons why i cant picture him as a HBF (apart from his elite ability on contested situations).

I would want Masten for kicking to straight leads inside the I50's and down the ground. Would rather Swift in any constested situation, kicking long to a contest I50 and for squaring the ball. The worst thing you can do for Swift is lead hard at him at the moment but i think he can improve on that.

Well said EH.

Even in games we see some awesome, penetrating kicks from Masto and some ordinary ones as well, so it's not surprising to see conflicting reports.

But Larrikin - so far there's 2 people who have posted seeing Masten kick some shockers. One you suggested had an agenda (who in fact is a huge fan of Masten, which is the reason he watched him so closely), and the other you suggested was too harsh on him. Obviously I really appreciate your efforts going down there and writing the report, but surely its possible they saw some shockers and you simply missed them? :)

I'm a big fan of Masten, Larri, I have had to sit there and defend him every game so far this year as he has shown glimpses of what he can do but overall has been a little disappointing so far.

I think he has the attributes to be a quality player, but probably not elite.

My point was, anyone who watched training and then said "He was missing targets all night" is misrepresenting the truth. And I wasn't talking about people from here, I was talking about the individual who said that on EFH, and I actually don't know who that was.

Like I said, I didn't see all of training, so could've missed some shanks, but from what I saw in the full field drill there were several examples of pinpoint, long kicking.

time to move on

thanks for the Report Larri, lets hope this doesn't put you off providing other things you witness.

Another thing to mention is that MiStaker was back training with the main group and didn't appear to have a hand guard or to be struggling with his injury...
