It was my day off today, I was at the gym when the guys came out to train, so went and watched as much as I could.

The most noticible absentee was David Hille - what that means is any ones guess. The rest of the squad besides the known injuries was there (Unless I of course I missed not notcicing someonne else missing - I wasnt exactly checking off a list or anything.)

Tried my hardest to figure out who Ant555 was - no one in the crowd had the ANT name on their back so figured he was absent as well....:)

OK I kept a close eye on Matthew Lloyd. He started off being tested by running, he ran a few 150metres at about 3/4 pace. He went back into the rooms, but must have passed as he came back out to join the rest of training.

While he trained, I felt he made sure he kept within himself. He did run at times, but he was never flat out sprinting. He looked ok running in that you could not tell that he was injured at all. At the end of the session he was having shots at goal from about 45 to 50 metres. He was kicking goals but he did not quite have the same penetration as he normaly has. I would say he was ensuring that he did not overextend himself.

Will he play on Friday? At the start of the session I was thinking NO. By the end I was starting to think that maybe he can. If he does play I would expect his opponent to run off him a lot...
To be honest, he could play as long as you expect that he will not sprint flat out. On that basis I would probably give him one more week to be on the safe side.

As for everyone else, there was no standouts (good or bad) or anything that I noticed that we did not already know about any of the players.
With McVeigh out I would say that JJ will take his place, JJ trained to his normal level.

One part of training that I liked was when we spent a couple of minutes practising standing on the mark. :) It was funny, Alwyn Davey was a player kicking the ball, but he had an imaginary ball in his empty hands...looked very funny!

PS It was also different not having Sheeds lurking around!
PSS I noticed that Andy the property guy (guy who picks up the footballs at training and at matches) actually took part in training, in that he played the full back role on other players in one drill....never seen him that active at training before.

Sorry the report is not in as much depth as Ant covers, was a case of I just happned to be around and took a quick look...

Thanks Phil, muchly appreciated.

Good news about Lloyd as even if he doesn't play this week, at least he will be back the week after.

Cheers

Cheers Phil.

Could you elaborate on the standing on the mark drill? What exactly was being taught? Were they trying to be as offputting as possible, were they running up to the mark? I just dont understand why this facet of the game needs practice.

Good work Phil...!:thumbsu: Nice to hear Lloydy is running quite smoothly, and will definitely be back in 2 weeks, maybe this week...:thumbsu:

Cheers Phil.

I probably should have explained in more detail in the first post but I was running out of time.

It was more about the man on the mark (MOTM) trying to 'read' the kicker...

So the kicker would suddenly play on running to the right and the MOTM would react accordinly.

Or the kicker would fake to kick the ball left, then turn to kick it right and the MOTM would have to try to guess/read this and react to it.

So it was about the MOTM being switiched on, and to a lesser degree teaching the kicker how to play on and avoid the MOTM...

So sometimes for example the MOTM had jumped in the air clapping his hands, and suddenly the kicker would play on moving to the left or right while the guy was mid air.. So the drill was all about practicing the 1%ers..

I hope that makes sense....

i think as we continue to seek the edge in what is a very competitive environment it is an important facet of the game.. especially after phil explained the exact drill.. i mean how annoying is it when you see a poor effort on the mark that allows a quick switch or play on.. especially with umpires now being so quick with holding the ball.. if you even lay a hand on a guy who tries to run past you will often be rewarded.. also by knowing the opposition.. ie if they are likely to run around to the left to get more penetration.. particularly just outside 50m.. if you can protect that space a bit more it makes a huge impact.. imho...
